BJP should apologise to people for appointing Vemula suicide accused as its Telangana chief: Congress
Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said Mr. Rao's elevation had 'once again proved that whoever goes against the Dalits and Adivasis will be rewarded by the BJP'.
Police's clean chit
Rohith Vemula, a PhD student at the University of Hyderabad, had committed suicide over alleged caste discrimination. Last year, the Telangana Police had filed a closure report in court, giving a clean chit to all the accused, including Mr. Rao, who took over as the BJP State unit chief last Saturday (July 5, 2025).
Mr. Vikramarka said there should not only be a rethink on such appointments but the BJP should unconditionally apologise to the country.
He said Rohit Vemula's suicide had shaken the conscience of the country and forced people to reflect on what was happening under the BJP rule. 'He was a PhD scholar and was an active member of the Ambedkar Students' Association (ASA). For the discrimination he was facing, he, along with a few friends, thought they would bring the issues to the attention of the university for the cause of self-respect and social justice for Dalits. When he [Vemula] was fighting for these causes, the student wing leader of the BJP, Susheel Kumar, filed a false case and brought a lot of pressure on the university authorities to book and rusticate the boys and shame them, and finally this led to the death of Rohith,' he alleged.
Then, BJP MLC Ramchander Rao came along with his 'goons, did a dharna, met the Vice-Chancellor, and forced the authorities to take action against the ASA students, filing a false case too,' Mr. Vikramarka further alleged, adding that 'such pressure ultimately led Rohith to take his life'.
The Telangana Deputy Chief Minister also claimed that Mr. Kumar, who was an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leader, has been appointed assistant professor at the University of Delhi.
'My appeal to all people is to think deeply about what's happening in this country. The basic duty of the government should be to protect the lives, dignity and self-respect of every citizen of the nation,' Mr. Vikramarka said, adding, 'What has been alarming is that the BJP is not just going against the Constitution; they are giving calls to change it.'

CPM protests in Goalpara against eviction drives
Guwahati: CPM staged a mega demonstration in Goalpara on Tuesday, accusing state govt of working in the interests of corporates and against the citizens of the country. This comes just days after eviction drives in lower Dhubri and Goalpara districts. Thousands of people, mostly those evicted, joined the demonstration in protest against govt's "inhuman" act of evicting people at Chapar in Dhubri and Paikan reserve forest in Goalpara. CPM MLA from Sarbhog, Manoranjan Talukdar, said the demand is very clear — govt must provide sufficient compensation and rehabilitation, not in the riverine areas, to the evicted families at the earliest. He urged the CM to call a sitting in the assembly for discussion on the matter if the CM cannot agree to the demands of CPM. "We will not sit on the road demonstrating against eviction if the CM can prove a majority supporting eviction," he added. Talukdar appealed to other opposition parties to raise their voices against the eviction. "We will put all efforts to defeat the BJP in the 2026 assembly elections," he added. The MLA said their (present BJP-led govt) main target is a particular community. "This govt is communal, and there is no doubt," he added. He said CM Sarma-led govt will be bound to provide rehabilitation to the evicted people, and this is established by the mega eviction drive at Gorukhuti in Darrang. "Bowing down to the continuous protests and legal battle following the eviction drive at Gorukhuti in Darrang in September 2021, the govt rehabilitated the families," he added. He accused the govt of working for the interests of the big corporate players. "Corporate players could have purchased land. Why is eviction required?," he added. He accused the CM of creating an atmosphere of fear by carrying out eviction drives across lower Assam. "Stop this inhuman act," he added. Meanwhile, the party's state general secretary, Suprakash Talukdar, said that the demonstration in Goalpara is justified. "If the govt has a plan to rehabilitate the evicted families, as they keep on claiming, rehabilitation should have been done first. They are now staying on the roads," he added.
