South film industry is 'little behind' on OTT space, says Annapurna Studios' Supriya Yarlagadda

Hindustan Times03-05-2025
Producer-entrepreneur Supriya Yarlagadda of Annapurna Studios opened up about the rise of OTT in the last few years and why south film industries need more writers now to catch up on that space. She was part of a panel discussion at the WAVES 2025 summit where she advocated the need to understand the 'game' better in the industry. Yarlagadda then added how the streaming revolution has given Indian storytellers the scope to write more original ideas, which don't depend on stars or budgets but on great characters. She said, 'I must say, maybe we aspire to still be on the big screen, which is why we have been a little behind in exploring series format. I think there's a Tamil story, Kannada story, Telugu story, Malayalam story and recently there have been some successes (on OTT). But I think that we are behind. We need to catch up. And the only way to do that is to have more writers.'
She went on to add, 'It's not about trying to mount them on stars, mount them with big budgets— which we used to, we love that—but understanding that this game is very different. And to all the writers out there, with all these beautiful stories being told, I think it's our time now for digital.'
Surpriya spoke as part of the panel titled Breaking New Ground: Evolution of Storytelling in the Digital Era. The panel featured a lineup including Ruchika Kapoor Sheikh (Director, Original Films, Netflix India), producer Siddharth Roy Kapur, Tanya Bami (Series Head, Netflix India), Academy Award-winning producer Guneet Monga, and acclaimed American director, screenwriter, and producer Michael Lehmann.

‘Wanted to hit my head on the wall': Shilpa Shirodkar on returning to India due to depression, be close to sister Namrata; emotional cost of buried grief

Shilpa Shirodkar, one of Bollywood's most recognisable faces in the 1990s, recently reflected on battling depression and the powerful support system that helped her through it. Having taken a 13-year hiatus from acting to raise her family in London, Shilpa eventually returned to India, not to reclaim her career, but to be closer to her sister, Namrata Shirodkar, following the devastating loss of both her parents. 'I didn't get films and I didn't try also. I didn't even try for television also. In fact, when I came back to India, I wasn't in a great mental state. I had lost my parents, and I was in really bad depression. And I actually came back to India to be next to my sister (Namrata Shirodkar). I had nothing on my mind about work,' she shared in a conversation with Pinkvilla. Her husband, Aparesh, made a profound personal sacrifice to support her decision: 'In 2010, when I decided to come back, Aparesh's career was at its peak, but he realised that I needed to come back, and he left everything and came back.' Despite having no intentions of returning to the screen, Shilpa eventually found herself acting again and even producing for television. But behind that professional re-emergence was a painful period marked by overwhelming emotional distress: 'I used to cry a lot, I had no control over my tears. Even when anything good happened, still I couldn't stop crying. I had become a robot, and wasn't interested in anything. I had put on so much weight, I had dark circles, I had no interest in life. I used to not go out, don't do anything, was just doing things because I had a young child, dropping her and picking her up from school. Wasn't talking to anyone at home. If I talked, there was misunderstanding. In fact, I just wanted to hit my head on the wall.' Counselling psychologist Athul Raj tells 'Unresolved grief-related depression often hides in plain sight. The person might be going about their daily life, showing up at work, and making small talk, but inside, they feel emotionally shut down.' A post shared by Shilpa Shirodkar Ranjit (@shilpashirodkar73) He adds that situational sadness usually has a clear cause, like a breakup or disappointment, and tends to ease with support or time. 'Burnout comes from prolonged stress, often work-related, and while it's exhausting, it usually improves with rest or lifestyle changes. But unresolved grief is different. It comes from a loss that was never fully processed. The grief was either ignored, dismissed, or pushed away, and it settled into the body like a weight,' notes Raj. In Indian families, he says, people are often told to be strong, to move on quickly, or to avoid talking about pain. Over time, these unspoken emotions build up. They don't disappear. They show up as fatigue, irritability, emotional numbness, or chronic sadness. Spousal support can be a lifeline when someone is going through depression, says Raj, adding, 'It's not about having the answers or fixing things. It's about being emotionally present when the person feels most lost. When someone is depressed, their inner world can feel dark, empty, and disconnected. In that space, a partner's steady presence becomes a quiet but powerful reminder that they're not alone.' That said, he mentions that supporting someone through depression is hard. It can feel confusing and draining. 'Partners often don't know what to say or do. They might fear saying the wrong thing or feel helpless watching someone they love struggle. That's why partners need support too. They need space to express their own emotions, understand what depression really is, and learn what helps and what doesn't,' he stresses.

How Pujara, Gill Convinced Jasprit Bumrah To Play FIFA: 'Won't Take Any Catches'

Cheteshwar Pujara has revealed the hilarious tale of how he, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Wriddhiman Saha convinced Jasprit Bumrah to play FIFA with them. News18 Cheteshwar Pujara has shared some wholesome insights into how Jasprit Bumrah is off the field. Speaking to the BBC, he narrated how in Bumrah's early years with the Test team, the team's FIFA group had to threaten him that they wouldn't take any catches off his bowling, just to convince the pacer to play the video game. Pujara covered a lot about Bumrah in the piece, how he was quicker than most Indian pacers in his initial years, and how his action made it difficult even for slip fielders. The former India number three said that off the field, Bumrah was reserved and introverted, who loved to spend as much time by himself in his room as possible. 'There was a group of us – myself, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and former wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha – who would always be playing Fifa on the PlayStation while on tour and whenever we invited Jasprit it was hard work getting him there," Pujara said. 'In the end we had to joke that we wouldn't take any catches off his bowling if he didn't come. Bumrah needed the help of a good partner when playing Fifa – as a gamer he's not up to much – but it was on his first tour of England in 2018 when he went up another level as a bowler." Bumrah took 14 wickets in three Tests on that tour (his second Test series) and is yet to look back, becoming arguably the greatest pacer India has seen, with 217 scalps at 19.49. 'In the dressing room he is always watching the game. Most fast bowlers come off the field and relax with their feet up. He does relax but he always has an eye on the field. When I used to sit next to him he would always be giving an input on what our batters or the opposition could be doing differently, which is why he was viewed as a candidate to be captain before India appointed Shubman Gill," Pujara said. 'Most people talk about Bumrah's skills with the ball, his angle or his action but his biggest strength is often overlooked. He has a brilliant cricket brain which comes from his time in the IPL. There he worked with people like former Sri Lanka bowler Lasith Malinga and has gained the skills to outsmart a batter. His first instinct is always to bowl his best ball but if a batter gets in he knows all of their strengths and weaknesses. He has taken the skills from white-ball cricket to become the complete Test bowler," he added. Gill is leading and Bumrah has played two Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
