Iconic Scots hairdresser Charlie Miller who styled A-list celebrities dies aged 80
Mr Miller cut the hair of the late Sir Sean Connery and received an OBE for services to hairdressing from the Queen. Charlie Miller, an iconic Scots hairdresser who styled the hair of top celebrities, has passed away. Mr Miller's family announced his death at the age of 80. He died peacefully and surrounded by his family on Monday, July 14. A statement posted online said Mr Miller, who cut the hair of the late Sir Sean Connery, Hollywood actor Leslie Nielsen, and fashion designer Donna Karan, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2015. He spent the last three years of his life in the Queen's Manor Care Home in Edinburgh. The acclaimed Scot leaves behind two sons, Jason and Josh, four grandchildren, and his wife, Janet. The post read: "Charlie's warmth, vision, and unwavering dedication to his craft and community touched the lives of so many - colleagues, clients, and friends alike. "His legacy lives on in every salon chair, every team member he inspired, and every client who felt his passion for excellence and kindness, delivered with genuineness, empathy and warmth. "We are heartbroken as we extend our heartfelt condolences to Janet, sons Jason and Josh, daughter-in-law India, his four grandchildren Isha, Isaac, Eden and Olivia, sister Helen, and the wider family.' Mr Miller, whose career spanned almost six decades and whose salons are spread across Edinburgh, was the first Scottish hairdresser to receive an OBE for services to hairdressing, presented by Her Majesty the Queen in 2012. He was three-time Scottish Hairdresser of the Year, Avant-Garde Hairdresser of the Year, and had two nominations for British Hairdresser of the Year. Miller was also a judge for major competitions around the world, including the British Hairdressing Awards. He judged international titles such as Japanese, Dutch, and Norwegian Hairdresser of the Year. In 2007, he began personally styling real-hair wigs for teenagers through the Teenage Cancer Trust and was instrumental in launching the 'Hair 4 U' initiative in Scotland, now operated by The Little Princess Trust. Mr Miller was close friends with the late Kwik Fit founder Sir Tom Farmer and famously cut his hair at the North Pole. A spiritualist, Mr Miller also learned from the Dalai Lama - whom he gifted a tartan-pouched hair clipper in 1988. Mr Miller's sons told the BBC: "Our dad was so much more than the name above the salon doors. "He was a force of creativity, integrity, and love - for his work, for his team, and most of all his family. "Whether you knew him as a hairdresser, a mentor, a colleague, or a friend, you'll know the warmth he brought to every conversation and the generosity with which he gave his time, his talent, and his heart." They said they were heartbroken but vowed to continue their father's legacy. A Charlie Miller spokeswoman also told the BBC: "Charlie's kindness, humility, and genuine love for people defined both his personal and professional life. "He touched the lives of so many - from his loyal clients and trusted colleagues to the wider creative community." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Lewis Capaldi gives Scots chance to bag free tickets to sold-out tour - by visiting Greggs on this date
Fans have hailed Lewis Capaldi and Greggs' collab as "the most iconic British combo since tea met biscuits". Lewis Capaldi has made a triumphant comeback to the music scene with number one single 'Survive,' a performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and a sold-out tour - but he is giving back in a very special way. Last week, the Scots singer's eagerly awaited UK and Ireland arena tour sold out within minutes of extra dates being added. Due to the overwhelming demand, which fans snapped up in record time, he promptly added seven additional dates, but said that would be everyone's lot, as he is conscious of "pushing himself too far too soon". However, those who missed out on the star's comeback gigs might still be in luck. On Tuesday night, the 'Grace' chanter announced on Instagram that fans can bag a free pair of premium tickets to his sold-out UK tour. And how do fans go about it, you might ask? Well, music lovers are being asked to dress up as the hitmaker himself and get themselves down to one of five selected Greggs shops across the country to be in with a shout. But be warned - there are just 25 pairs up for grabs and it is first come, first served. Taking to the social media platform, Greggs official page explained: "Get yourself down to one of five selected Greggs shops in your BEST Capaldi cosplay to be in with a chance to nab the exclusive tickets. "With just 25 pairs available at each shop, only those who truly capture Lewis' iconic sense of fashion will be eligible to join the queue and have a chance to win..." Aptly, the competition kicks off in Lewis' hometown of Glasgow on Tuesday, July 22, from 6pm, when Greggs at 393 Sauchiehall Street will no doubt be inundated with Lewis lookalikes who hope to rock out to his tunes in person. The 28-year-old is set to play four dates in Scotland this coming September, with two nights at Aberdeen's P&J Live on September 10 and 11, and two nights at Glasgow's OVO Hydro on September 13 and 14. Salford's Gregg branch will host the lookalike contest on the same day as Glasgow, while Leicester Square in London and Bullring Shopping Centre in Birmingham will be next up on Wednesday, July 23 from 6pm. Fans' last chance will be at Meadowhall Retail Park Drive Thru in Sheffield on Thursday, July 24 from 6pm. Scots could be sporting anything from Lewis' classic black trousers and white tee combo, to his American flag ensemble from when the talent's hit single 'Someone You Loved' went to number one in the US in 2019. Afterwards the funny man and musician jokingly labelled himself"America's sweetheart". Followers of Lewis' career already can't get enough of his decision to team up with the much-loved food spot, known for their sausage rolls and Yum Yums. One fan wrote: "Capaldi cosplay AND Greggs? This is the most iconic British combo since tea met biscuits". Another wrote: "Sauchiehall St Greggs isn't ready for what I have planned". A third enthused: "This is so iconic, I love it!"

Lewis Capaldi spotted in Celtic top as he arrives for The Tonight Show appearance in New York
The Scots singing sensation summed up his Glastonbury performance to host Jimmy Fallon in three words. Lewis Capaldi was spotted wearing a Celtic top while arriving for his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in New York - where he summed up his Glastonbury performance in three very revealing words. The Scots singing sensation is Stateside to promote his new single 'Survive' which raced to the top of the charts after a two year hiatus from the music scene. The song garnered over four million streams in its debut week. The Glaswegian stepped back from the limelight after a panic attack triggered by his Tourettes Syndrome at Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage in 2023 forced him to prioritise his wellbeing. But arriving to NBC Studios in Midtown Manhattan on Monday, July 14, Capaldi looked the pictured of health as he donned his beloved side's jersey paired with black Nike shorts and Adidas trainers. The hitmaker looked relaxed as he made his way into the building lobby before going on to perform his latest tune to millions of US viewers. Despite joking the single was "currently underperforming in America," the star opened up about happy times - his secret return to Glastonbury. Firstly reflecting on his meltdown on stage in 2023, Lewis said: "The first time did not go well. I had what the children would refer to as a bit of a menty B. A bit of a mental breakdown on stage. Nothing too serious. "I have Tourettes so I used to tic quite a lot and I still do but I used to do this thing with my shoulder and it became really uncontrollable and I had a panic attack on stage at Glastonbury and I couldn't finish the song. "It happened a couple of times at shows and stuff but I think because this one was so publicised and had so many eyes on it, it really made me think I need to go and get this sorted, I can't keep doing this to myself." However, his return to the Pyramid Stage on June 27 saw Capaldi back with a bang. Speaking about how he felt in the run up to it, Lewis said: "It was terrifying. In the lead up to it I was like this is horrific, I've made a terrible decision and then we did it and it was really beautiful and lovely. "It went exactly as I hoped and it was probably the best day of my life - until I assume when I have a child I'll be like maybe, Glastonbury was still better." Last week, Lewis announced a UK tour last week which sold out in just minutes. The Someone You Loved chanter will play four dates in Scotland this coming September, with two nights at Aberdeen's P&J Live on September 10 and 11, and two nights at Glasgow's OVO Hydro on September 13 and 14. Lewis told the audience on The Tonight show: "You can try and get tickets but they're sold out baby so fat chance." Americans couldn't get enough of the talent's return to the small screen on the other side of the Atlantic. Taking to the YouTube comments, one music fan wrote: "Such a beautiful soul…he gives us all he has and never disappoints! I wish Jimmy had asked him where else he can be seen on TV in USA! I just want him to stay healthy and not overworked! I love his charming accent!!!!" Another scribed: "Lewis is an amazing person. I hoped he is very loved in his personal life." A third penned: "Authentically Scottish, no BS. Love him," while a fourth added: "I appreciate Jimmy Fallon having Lewis Capaldi on his show. It's great to hear how Lewis has been doing. Fantastic to hear he had a triumphant return at Glastonbury." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today.
