Govt plans to establish Rs3bn aquaculture park in Karachi
The minister made this announcement presiding a high-level meeting on the development of blue economy. The meeting was attended by Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) Chairman Noorul Haq Baloch, representatives from Korangi Fish Harbour Authority (KoFHA), the Marine Fisheries Department (MFD), and the Balochistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The 120-acre aquaculture park is estimated to produce 360 to 1,200 tons of seafood annually, depending on the species cultivated and the farming system employed. Its annual revenue is projected to be between $720,000 and $7.2 million, influenced by species selection, market prices, and production intensity, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs said in a press release.
The World Bank defines the blue economy as the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and job creation, while ensuring the health of the ocean ecosystem.
Minister Junaid said the project, covering 120 acres, should be developed under a public-private partnership framework, aiming to boost the country's blue economy through sustainable aquaculture.
The meeting was informed that the land cost for the aquaculture park has been set according to an extensive farming model, offering an affordable and efficient foundation for private investors.

Experts informed the meeting that Pakistan's coastal waters possess highly conducive conditions for aquaculture, providing an ideal environment for farming a variety of marine species.
To accelerate the process, the federal minister directed the KoFHA to submit a comprehensive execution report within 10 days.
Emphasising replication of success, he proposed extending the aquaculture model to Balochistan, leveraging its vast coastal belt for sustainable marine farming.
While, in a move aimed at enhancing coordination, Junaid ordered the relocation of Marine Fisheries Department sub office to the premises of the Gwadar Port Authority.
This administrative shift is expected to streamline inter-agency collaboration and expedite decision-making in blue economy initiatives.
In a separate meeting, the federal minister also reviewed the progress on the land allotment and lease policy of the Port Qasim Authority (PQA). Officials informed him that the Survey of Pakistan has been engaged to identify and demarcate PQA-owned land. Furthermore, it was conveyed that the revision of PQA's master plan is being aligned with the broader feasibility study for the National Ports Master Plan, currently underway.
Minister Junaid reiterated the government's commitment to promoting sustainable marine development, asserting that investments in aquaculture and port infrastructure are essential for ensuring food security, increasing exports, and generating employment across coastal regions.
The series of meetings held by the maritime minister mark a significant step in the government's broader maritime development strategy, focused on harnessing the full potential of Pakistan's coastal resources through innovation, institutional cooperation, and private sector engagement.

Clock ticking on TikTok with US shutdown looming over sale deal
TikTok could be forced to cease operations in the United States if China does not approve a proposed sale of the platform, according to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Speaking on CNBC, Lutnick emphasized the urgency of reaching a deal and asserted that control of TikTok's algorithm and technology must rest with Americans. 'China can have a little piece or ByteDance, the current owner, can keep a little piece. But basically, Americans will have control,' Lutnick said. 'If [China doesn't] approve it, then TikTok is going to go dark, and those decisions are coming very soon.' The short-form video app, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, is used by approximately 170 million Americans. A law passed in 2024 required ByteDance to either divest TikTok's U.S. assets or face a shutdown by January 19, unless substantial progress was made. Although President Donald Trump extended the deadline by 90 days to September 17, legal and political challenges have stalled negotiations. A plan had been in development earlier this year to spin off TikTok's U.S. business into a separate, American-owned company. However, progress halted after China signaled it would not approve the sale, especially following Trump's announcement of new tariffs on Chinese imports. Attorney General Pam Bondi recently sent letters to tech companies like Apple and Google, indicating that the Justice Department would not pursue enforcement actions against them for continuing to host TikTok. The letters cite Trump's conclusion that an immediate shutdown could hinder his ability to manage national security and foreign affairs. Some Democratic lawmakers have questioned Trump's authority to extend the deadline and argue that any deal reached must fully comply with U.S. law. TikTok has not issued a public comment on the situation as of yet.

Pakistan eyes $850mn annual revenue from Gwadar Port via fisheries, dates
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, on Friday said that with consistent investment, strategic policymaking, and improved infrastructure, Gwadar Port has the potential to generate over $850 million annually through value-added fisheries and date exports. Chairing a high-level meeting on Gwadar Port operationalisation attended by officials from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and representatives from relevant ministries and organisations, including Gwadar Port Authority, Commerce, Industries, and Communication through Zoom, the minister laid out a comprehensive strategy to boost economic activities in Gwadar, read a statement. Gwadar Port is a deep-sea port located in Gwadar, a coastal city in Balochistan. It holds strategic and economic significance for being a vital part of the multi-billion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. During the meeting, Junaid emphasised that fisheries and dates are the key economic drivers of the region. ' Poor connectivity, security issues hinder Gwadar Port usage: PDP Gwadar has a rich fish catch potential, and we must focus on local value addition to maximise benefits,' he said. He pointed out that 34 fish processing units are currently operating in Balochistan, but most require technological upgrades to meet export standards. 'Transforming these units to add value through packaging and processing before exporting is critical for uplifting the sector,' he added. The minister pointed out that Balochistan's coastline makes up 76.2% of Pakistan's total coastal length, yet its fish production significantly lags behind its actual potential. 'Balochistan has an estimated annual fish catch potential of around 300,000 tons. With proper value addition, this could generate approximately $645 million each year. However, current production is nearly half of that due to limited fishing capacity, obsolete technology, and regulatory hurdles,' he shared. Stakeholders told to promote Gwadar trade routes Turning to dates production, the minister stated that Panjgur and Turbat (Kech) districts together produce over 225,000 tons of dates annually—more than half of Pakistan's total. 'With value addition, the sector can generate up to $200–$205 million in revenue each year,' he said. To support business and connectivity in the region, the minister announced steps to improve air travel. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will increase its weekly flights to Gwadar from one to three, he said. 'Two weekly flights between Gwadar and Karachi and one between Gwadar and Islamabad are under consideration.' Furthermore, the possibility of introducing a chartered flight mechanism to facilitate travel for businesspersons and investors is also under consideration, the minister added.

US copper hits record high, expanding premium over the LME benchmark
LONDON: US copper futures hit a record high on Thursday, expanding their premium against the global benchmark with just over a week left until the planned date for the US import tariff on the metal. The most active COMEX copper futures rose 1.2% to $5.888 a lb after hitting a peak of $5.959, while the three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange fell 0.2% to $9,910 a metric ton in official open-outcry trading. The premium of COMEX over LME copper expanded to 31% from 29% on Wednesday. The premium remained below the 50% import tariff planned by President Donald Trump as the market was waiting for confirmation of the August 1 deadline and a list of the copper products to which the levy would apply. 'We are cautious of copper's current upward momentum. Any shift in the Trump's tariff policy – whether there are any exemptions or the rate itself is toned down – could see the COMEX premium falling,' said ING commodities analyst Ewa Manthey. Copper stocks in the COMEX-owned warehouses jumped 163% over the last four months, but inflows to them have been slowing down in recent days. This trend is likely to persist, improving availability of copper outside the US and keeping the global copper prices under pressure, Manthey said. Apart from the approaching August 1 deadline for the US copper import tariffs, the metals market focus is on China-US trade talks due in Sweden next week, US trade talks with other countries, and Washington's ongoing investigation into potential import tariffs for some critical minerals. Among other LME metals, tin was steady at $34,845 a ton in official activity after touching $35,100, for its highest since April 7, earlier in the session. Supporting the metal are low stocks in the LME-registered warehouses and large holdings of tin warrants - title documents conferring ownership. Aluminium lost 0.1% to $2,648 a ton, while zinc fell 0.3% to $2,853. Both hit a four-month high earlier in the session. Lead and nickel eased 0.2% to $2,028 and $15,540, respectively.
