World Cup-winning former France defender Benjamin Mendy joins Swiss club Zurich - World
Zurich said the former Manchester City and Monaco player signed a contract until the end of next season.
Now aged 30, Mendy played 10 times for France including one group-stage game at the 2018 World Cup for the eventual title winner. His name was sung prominently in the France team's unofficial tournament anthem that has almost 600 million views on YouTube.
Mendy joined Lorient in 2023 after six years at Man City, where he won three Premier League winner's medals before his contract expired.
He did not play for Man City after August 2021 while facing sexual assault charges of which he was later acquitted.
Zurich is eighth in the 12-team Swiss league though trails just seven points behind the leader Basel.

'We can beat anyone' PSG eventually conquered Europe, but Bayern defeated the French side 1-0 in the league phase of the Champions League back in November. "We have to try to take the energy and the good feeling into this match. We know it's going to be difficult but we feel like we can beat anyone when we're at our top level," Kane, who has 41 goals in 50 club appearances since last August, told Bayern's website. McCarthy names provisional TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2024 Harambee Stars squad
Kenya's head coach Benni McCarthy has unveiled a 30-man provisional squad that will begin preparations for the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, exactly one month before the Harambee Stars play their opening match of the tournament. Kenya will co-host the biennial Continental showpiece alongside neighbours Uganda and Tanzania between 02 – 30 August 2025. Former champions and FKF Premier League's runners up Gor Mahia and Bandari FC have each contributed five players to the squad while Police FC who clinched the league title for the first time ever have four players in the 30-man list. The Ulinzi Stars duo of Staphod Odhiambo and Yakeen Muteheli will drape in national colours for the first time ever after earning their debut call ups. Meanwhile, Tusker FC goalkeeper Brian Opondo will train for the first time ever with the national team. He was called up for the last World Cup qualifiers against Gabon and The Gambia, but was not able to join up for camp. In attack, coach McCarthy has included the top three scorers from the just concluded season, with Moses Shummah (17), Emmanuel Osoro (16) and Ryan Ogam (15) all getting a nod to show their scoring prowess on the Continental stage. Ogam, who plays for Tusker FC, missed most of the second leg with a knee injury and only returned for the final game of the season, playing 45 minutes. Tennis: Zverev revelations spark Wimbledon discussion about mental health - Omni sports
Mental health is not often spoken about in tennis but the three-time Grand Slam finalist Alexander Zverev's candid revelations at Wimbledon have made it a talking point at this year's tournament. The German third seed told reporters after a disappointing first round exit he often struggled -- both on and off the court. "I feel very alone out there at times. I struggle mentally.... I feel, generally speaking, quite alone in life at the moment," he said. "I've never felt this empty before.... Just lacking joy outside of tennis, as well," the 28-year-old former Olympic champion added. His comments come four years after former women's world number one Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open revealing she had suffered for a long time with depression. Asked about Zverev's remarks the 27-year-old replied she wasn't sure if she was the "person that should be giving advice". "Life is serious and not serious at the same time," she said, adding that she didn't play at England's Queen's Club tennis tournament last month because "mentally I didn't feel ready after losing in the French". "So, I skipped that," she said. Zverev, who reached the Australian Open final in January, said on Tuesday he lacked motivation in life and for the first time probably needed to consider therapy. He said even when he was winning he did not feel happy or motivated to keep going. 'Talk openly' His frank comments prompted Belarus's Aryna Sabalenka, 27, to urge him to continue to "talk openly", adding she had previously been in therapy for five years. "I think it's really important to be open and to talk about what are you experiencing because if you're going to keep it inside, it's just going to destroy you," she said. "The moment you start talk about your problems, you kind of start realising a lot of things... helping to solve them," she added. Tenth seed Emma Navarro, 24, said it was difficult for players to stay positive "when you're losing most weeks". "We have ourselves as our own critics, and then however many other people out there who are equally as critical," the US player said. She added she had "built a bit of a hard shell around me" to cope with the pressures. But she said she was often alarmed by the criticism and attention, both positive and negative, directed at young women players still in their teens. "I think it's really tough as a teenager to be exposed to that type of attention. It's a little bit scary because you're so impressionable at that age." "I cringe a little when I see younger kids dealing with that much attention," she said. For fellow American Madison Keys, 30, one major problem was the all consuming nature of players' lives. "From a pretty young age... our identity becomes very wrapped up in being a tennis player. That's great, but when you have the tough kind of weeks, months, years on tour, that can really take a toll on how you think about yourself as a person." She urged players to surround themselves with a "really great support system and.... don't go on Twitter (X)".
