'You Can't Pick And Choose': Pathan Questions Bumrah's Absence From 2nd Test
Jasprit Bumrah is not playing for India in the 2nd Test against England, which is taking place at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan is not happy with Jasprit Bumrah's absence from India's playing XI for the second Test against England, which got underway at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Wednesday (July 2). According to India Test captain Shubman Gill, Bumrah has been rested for the second England Test due to workload management.
Pathan, who has now donned the hat of an expert, while speaking on Sony Sports on Wednesday, when asked about Bumrah, said one can't pick and choose matches, citing workload management.
'If you are selected for the Indian team, then because of the workload, you cannot pick and choose. There is a reason for that. If you pick and choose, I know there is no bowler like Bumrah. Bumrah is a number one world-class bowler, but there is no injury here. There is workload management here. Because of workload management, if you pick and choose, then what happens? Akash Deep comes in. You expect that Akash Deep will do wonders. Maybe he will. But any bowler takes time. Continuity is very important. That continuity will not come. So overall, in a larger picture, I believe we have to start thinking as Indian cricket. Start thinking of playing without Bumrah and Shami. According to that, you should plan in Test cricket. See, Jasprit Bumrah—there are 5 Test matches overseas. If my main fast bowler is not playing 5 Test matches, then I am at a loss. So I don't have Bumrah's services in all matches. And the other young boy who is playing will only get a chance when Bumrah is not playing. Then he will not get stability," Pathan said.
'After this, when is the 5-match Test series being played overseas? This is not happening in this (2025-27) WTC cycle. There are 2 (Tests) in New Zealand. 2 (Tests) in Sri Lanka. There is no other overseas series. So this was the series where you had to play. If you don't play, then it is not good for the team. This is what I believe. I totally understand the niggles, but injury can be a concern in the future, and that's why you have to manage workload. If you pick and choose because of that, then that means Indian cricket is not getting the complete benefit," he added.
Bumrah was India's best bowler in the first Test. He bowled 24.4 overs in the first innings and picked up five wickets for 83 runs.

FIH Pro League poor show a temporary dip in form: Aslam Sher Khan
New Delhi, July 3 (UNI) Former India hockey great Aslam Sher Khan feels the Indian Men team's poor show at the European leg of the FIH Pro league should not be seen as a big cause of concern as the team has shown that it can peak at the right time. The Indian team suffered a run of seven successive losses in the European leg of the FIH Pro League recently finishing eighth on the points table. In an exclusive interview to UNI, the 1975 World Cup winner asserted that fans should not lose faith in the team. "They have been performing well for a long time, it is natural that there will be a dip, they were off-colour. But they are a good side with a lot of quality players. They will come back strong. They have shown that they can peak at the right time," Aslam Sher Khan said. Khan, who scored the crucial equaliser against Malaysia in the 1975 World Cup semi-final, said that with the introduction of the Hockey India League (HIL) a lot of Hockey is being played these days, so a balanced calendar needs to be followed. "A lot of hockey is being played nowadays, so a streamlined calendar needs to be there which prevents burnout. And rotation of players of course is important, so that bench strength is built. Europeans do a lot of rotation and follow a balanced calendar. They know for which tournament their best side should be fielded, in which competitions their number two side can be fielded, and where a mixture of experience and youth needs to be fielded," he explained. He noted that tournaments like FIH Pro League provide a lot of international exposure to players, but hosting tournaments in India is equally important. "When top teams come to India to play it boosts spectator interest, which will eventually translate into a robust club hockey culture," he added. UNI RKM RN

IND vs ENG: 'Two best spinners ... ' – Sourav Ganguly slams India's 'surprising' XI call at Edgbaston
Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: India's playing XI for the second Test against England in Birmingham on Wednesday has triggered widespread debate. The inclusion of three new faces — Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep — coupled with the resting of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and the omission of in-form spinner Kuldeep Yadav, drew sharp criticism from cricketing legends Sourav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, and Ravi Shastri . India's recent Test form has been underwhelming, with just one win in their last nine matches — the team's poorest run in over a decade. The struggles continued with a five-wicket defeat to England in the first Test at Leeds. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Former India captain Sourav Ganguly voiced concern over the spin choices. 'I'm not sure whether India are playing their two best spinners,' Ganguly said on Sony Sports. 'England have chosen to field first — that's surprising. But this could be India's best chance. Put runs on the board and hopefully it works out.' 'I had two great spinners Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the team. I used to stop the run flow on Day 1 of the Test and the two became dangerous as the match went ahead,' he added. Sunil Gavaskar questioned the exclusion of Kuldeep Yadav, especially considering the pitch conditions. IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Shubman Gill's statement ton, Jaiswal misses out & Karun Nair at No.3? 'I'm a little baffled that Kuldeep wasn't picked — especially on a surface where everyone says there's a bit more turn,' Gavaskar said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He also stressed that batting wasn't India's primary issue. 'If your top-order isn't scoring runs, then bringing in Washington at seven or Nitish Reddy at eight won't solve that. Those weren't the batters who failed in the first Test. You scored over 830 runs — not 380 — across two innings. That's plenty,' he added. According to Gavaskar, the team needed more focus on bowling reinforcements. 'The area that needed strengthening was wicket-taking, not batting.' Former India head coach Ravi Shastri was critical of the decision to rest Bumrah, calling it a misstep in such a crucial match. 'You don't rest your premier fast bowler in a series-defining Test,' he remarked, suggesting that Bumrah should not have had the option to sit out. With Bumrah rested, India fielded Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar as their spin options in the Birmingham Test.
