Blink-182's Mark Hoppus thought he 'deserved' cancer diagnosis

Metro06-05-2025
Blink-182's Mark Hoppus, along with his bandmates Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker, are known for their sense of humour, but his 2021 cancer diagnosis left him convinced he wouldn't make it.
The co-founder and bassist for the group has released his first memoir, Fahrenheit-182, which details his formative years, including his parents' divorce, a lifelong battle with anxiety, and rise to fame in one of punk rock's biggest bands.
But Hoppus, 53, was left feeling like he was 'burning from the inside out' from being diagnosed with stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma after discovering a lump in his neck in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking to Metro, the musician explained that after years of success with blink-182 and supergroup +44, he felt as if he 'deserved' his diagnosis.
'I thought that people would laugh, or would think that I deserved it, because that's how I felt,' he explained.
'I'd been lucky for so long, the band had been so lucky. We started off in a garage and went on to play amphitheatres, had number one records, everything you could hope for in a band had come true.
'This is the bill I pay, I thought. Everything balances out, all the good is getting balanced out by something bad.'
Even sharing the news with the world didn't go to plan, after the singer made his treatment public when he accidentally shared a photo of himself on a chemo drip to his public Instagram Stories instead of to his close friends.
Dosed up on medication after an infusion at the time, he explained: 'We were driving home and my publicist called and said it had been picked up and radio stations are talking about it.
'I called my friend who runs a radio station in Los Angeles and I wrote a statement while parked on the side of the road and listened as it was read out on air.
'I was like, 'Oh, this is my eulogy. It's happening in real time.''
Hoppus, who is now cancer free, discussed how his diagnosis healed his friendship with bandmate DeLonge. The relationship between the pair went through numerous separations, reconciliations, and significant changes in the height of the band's success.
The duo were the two original founders of blink-182 in 1992, but DeLonge left the band in 2005 when the group went on an indefinite hiatus. He went on to form Angels & Airwaves before leaving the band in 2015.
His second departure from the band further emphasised the growing divide between him and Hoppus. This time, the band replaced DeLonge with Matt Skiba, a member of the band Alkaline Trio.
DeLonge went on to dedicate a large part of his career to becoming heavily involved in UFO research, founding an entertainment company named To the Stars Academy of Arts & Sciences which has aerospace and science divisions dedicated to ufology.
After not speaking for several years, their relationship mended when Hoppus shared his cancer diagnosis. He told Metro: 'Writing in this book about the hardest times, like arguments with Tom or Tom quitting the band, I was trying to write fairly because I don't want to demonise him.
'He's not a bad person. Tom is an amazing person. He just gets distracted sometimes and that's what makes him great. He has these big dreams and big plans and he's willing to pivot at a moment's notice. One day he can just say, 'I wanna chase aliens'. That's what makes him great.' More Trending
With an upcoming tour and festivals on the horizon, the future of the band is now looking brighter than ever after complicated break-ups which resulted in Hoppus and Barker 'hating DeLonge's guts' at one point.
'There's people that have been there since the 90s, there are people that maybe know All The Small Things and want to come to a show. I'd like to continue creating and just making art and being silly and having fun,' Hoppus told Metro.
'All I want do is play music and make Tom and Travis laugh.'

Noel and Liam Gallagher hold hands in historic moment as Oasis tour kicks off

The guns have fallen silent, and the wait is officially over—Oasis is back. Once-feuding brothers Noel, 58, Liam Gallagher, 52, last performed together in 2009, and no one has been in any doubt about the frosty relationship between them since the band split. But now, after 16 years of both private rows and public mudslinging—and for the sake of taking home a reported £50million each—the siblings have called a truce. Tonight, they walked out to a roaring, sold-out crowd at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, to kick off their hotly anticipated reunion tour, which was announced last August. Bang on 8:15pm, Noel and Liam launched into their tune Hello, which seems a rather apt opener. After this, they went into Acquiesce, which originally appeared as the B-side to Oasis' first number-one single, Some Might Say, in 1995. It was also the opener that many predicted when set lists seemingly leaked just days ago ahead of the gig to 74,500 adoring fans. The brothers swaggered out on stage in their usual attire—Liam in his coat and Noel in a denim shirt—following a video displaying numerous headlines about their feud and subsequent reconciliation. 'This is not a drill,' also appeared on the screen in giant letters, with the crowd—decked out in bucket hats, shades, and Oasis merch—sending cups flying by jumping in the air once the Britpop band appeared. Before their third song, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? Liam said on the mic: 'Hello, people, it's been too long.' 'It's good to be back, good to be back,' he added, then shouting: 'Yes, beautiful people!' Noel and Liam appear to want to keep their distance for much of the night, which follows rumours that they barely rehearsed together in the lead-up to the inaugural show. Netflix has me hooked on this 'naughty' hidden gem Spanish period drama

This week I've been bingeing a new-to-me period drama that's a whole heap of fun, but I somehow missed when it was initially released earlier this year. However, my Netflix recommendations eventually came through for me last weekend when they suggested I try a Spanish historical show. A hidden gem, The Lady's Companion tells the story of chaperone Elena Bianda (Nadia de Santiago), who is hired on a trial basis to find husbands for three wealthy sisters (Isa Montalbán's Cristina, Zoe Bonafonte's Sara and Iratxe Emparán as Carlota) in Madrid by their foreboding father, Don Pedro (Tristán Ulloa). Battling the sharp elbows of her fellow chaperones alongside frustrating relatives of the family's, it soon becomes clear that Elena is also hiding from a past that comes back to bite her, with the audience drawn into a late 19th-century world of love, scandal and comic intrigue. And obviously there are several potential suitors running around, causing chaos, including Álvaro Mel as Santiago, Iván Lapadula as Eduardo and Carloto Cotta as Gabriel. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. I would describe The Lady's Companion (Spanish title: Manual para señoritas) as a mix between Bridgerton and Fleabag with a touch of Amélie's vibrant colour and whimsy, producing an entertaining and period drama in its own right – with a sprinkling of naughtiness. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video It has some of the sauciness and irreverence towards the traditional view of these kinds of shows as Bridgerton does; there are certainly some pre-marital bedroom shenanigans going on from as early as the first episode… Our heroine Elena regularly breaks the fourth wall, addressing the camera and talking directly to the audience à la Fleabag (although no one's caught her out yet, like Andrew Scott's Hot Priest). She also argues with the show's narrator when she deems he's stepping out of line. While the abundance of flowers and the characters' gorgeously sumptuous dresses are also reminiscent of Bridgerton, with the brightness turned up to 11 on the colour as well as the quirkiness of fun graphics onscreen, we are also – knowingly – enjoying the artifice and fantasy, as with Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2001 French film starring Audrey Tauou. The Lady's Companion also reminds me a bit of The Law According to Lidia Poët, although this show has matchmaking and romance more at the centre of it than Lidia Poët's mystery and crime. But Sara's quest to become a doctor also has a clear parallel to Lidia's experience as a female lawyer also trying to succeed in a male dominated profession and society. The show boasts plenty of racy moments alongside the general rebelliousness of its female characters, including its very own raunchy carriage-based rendezvous and plenty of illicit affairs. Anachronistic music choices are also injected, like Bridgerton, to spice up certain scenes, such as Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You and The Turtles' iconic 1967 song Happy Together soundtracking a group dance number. I'm far from the only one enjoying The Lady's Companion either, with it nabbing 89% from fan reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. 'Amazing! I binge watched this. It is witty, funny, romantic, and has a fascinating storyline that forces you to develop an attachment to the characters. It is impossible not to love this series,' enthused Elise Hartley in a Google review as Rawan Najji G added: 'I love it. Can't wait for season TWOOO LETS GOO [si]. I literally finished it in one day y'all 😭😭' Sylvia W also revealed she had 'binged it in less than a week, which is very unusual for me' on Rotten Tomatoes, while Hannah labelled it 'a must watch'. More Trending 'Me and the wife could not stop laughing. We both agree they MUST not leave us hanging and bring it back for season 2,' chimed in Erich H. Sadly, it looks like The Lady's Companion may have fallen foul of the Netflix curse after the streamer confirmed in May that it had been cancelled after one season – despite being shaped around a continuation and ending on a cliff-hanger. Still, if you enjoy escaping into the safe space of a glossy and witty period drama, there are eight episodes waiting for you, nonetheless. Lauren shuts down Coronation Street character as she fears what his motives are

Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) has been through enough hideous ordeals to last a lifetime in Coronation Street. Most recently she accidentally took some LSD and found herself wandering through the factory, hallucinating that she was being pursued by Joel Deering (Calum Lill). This flashback to the grim events that she endured at the hands of the evil pervert absolutely terrified her, so much so that she ended up falling down the fire escape and sustaining broken ribs and a ruptured spleen. Aadi Alahan (Adam Hussain), at whose party the LSD was taken, blames himself for what happened. Although he never meant for Lauren to take the drug it was his fault it was placed somewhere she could accidentally take it. Feeling guilty, he visited Lauren in hospital and she told him the hospital had done drug tests and concluded she was spiked. After Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney)'s experience of being spiked, Aadi felt even more guilty that he'd inadvertently put Lauren through a similar experience. He admitted to Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) that it was all his fault that there were drugs at the party and Nina (Mollie Gallagher), Summer (Harriet Bibby) and Lauren ended up taking them. Aadi tried to tell Lauren, too, but bottled it at the last minute when she told him not to blame himself that someone had brought drugs to the party. More Trending Wanting to do something to make things right for Lauren, Aadi insisted that he was going to lend her some money to help her get back on her feet. She was reluctant to accept but he wouldn't take no for an answer. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? We've seen before that Lauren can be suspicious when people try to help her – and after her horrific experience with Joel Deering it's completely understandable. Only a few months ago she lost her friendship with Bobby Crawford (Jack Carroll) after suspecting that he was blackmailing her in an attempt to get closer to her. Bobby had only been trying to help her and he was devastated when he found out what she'd thought. So when Aadi offers to help her move into her new flat and gives her an air fryer, Lauren is immediately suspicious of his motives and tells him she doesn't need any help from him.
