Shedeur Sanders on not getting 1st-team reps with Browns, including Friday: 'It's not in my control'
Sanders is one of four quarterbacks competing for Cleveland's starting job, alongside veteran Joe Flacco, fourth-year player Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Although all four offer different strengths, Flacco and Pickett have been primarily working with the first team in training camp, while the two rookies work with backups.
Sanders didn't get any first-team reps on Friday, though he did get some snaps with the second team for the first time in training camp. His overall completion percentage was better than the other quarterbacks, with the usual caveats regarding reps, situations and whether it was the first, second or third team.
When asked why he wasn't getting first-team reps before practice, Sanders said he wasn't thinking about that.
"That's not my place to answer," Sanders told reporters Friday, via ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. "I feel like it's not in my control, so I'm not even gonna think about that or have that even in my thought process."
He also emphasized his gratitude to be training with Cleveland at all — a direct contrast to the bluster that seemed to trigger his stunning slide in the NFL Draft.
"There's a lot of people that wanna have the opportunity to be at this level, and I'm here, and I'm thankful to have the opportunity, so, whatever that is it is," Sanders added.
As a result of the abundance of quarterbacks, Sanders has also been spotted practicing with members of the Browns' equipment team. Sanders said the targets didn't "faze" him, citing his college career between Jackson State and Colorado.
"It doesn't really faze me. You gotta understand, we came all the way from an HBCU to a Power 5 [conference team], and now we here, so," Sanders said, via Oyefusi. "At this point you look around, there's nothing that's a challenge, I would say."
Meanwhile, Sanders has other things to deal with. The rookie was cited twice for speeding after allegedly driving over 100 miles per hour on a Cleveland highway. On Friday, Sanders seemed in good spirits on the issue.
"I really don't even drive that much anymore," Sanders said with a laugh, via NFL reporter Andrew Siciliano. "I hope everybody learn from my situation, you know, to not drive fast at all."

Also, via Siciliano, Sanders misses living near his brother, Shilo — at least partially because he misses Shilo's juicer.
Who's in the lead for the Browns' starting QB job?
The Browns' quarterback room is one of the oddest in the NFL, and the lack of a clear depth chart is affecting the dynamic. Flacco, despite being the most veteran player in the room, has chafed at the idea of being a mentor to the younger QBs; Gabriel and Sanders, as the two rookies, are trying to find a way to break through.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters this week that all four of the QBs have played well, and that they want to make a decision on who will start "sooner than later."

In the meantime, tracking the four players' reps has been an easy way to try and gauge who might end up where on Cleveland's quarterback list. Drills this week have featured a rotation — Flacco, Pickett, Gabriel, Sanders — that points to the potential order.
Additionally, in 7-on-7 practices on Wednesday (the Browns' first day of camp), Sanders was the only player to miss more than one of his throws, going 3-for-8. That performance may have something to do with why he's not getting as many first-team reps.

6 Chargers players to watch in Pro Football Hall of Fame Game
It's game week in the NFL! We're not quite to the meaningful games, but hey, it's football at this point. The Chargers kick off the football season with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Thursday against the Lions. Many of the team's top players will sit out, including stars such as Justin Herbert, Khalil Mack, and Derwin James. We have seen a bit of the Chargers in training camp, and from that, let's look at six players to watch on Thursday evening. QB Trey Lance On Tuesday, the former third overall pick was named the starter for Thursday's contest. Jim Harbaugh mentioned Lance's lack of game reps in his career, and it's true. He's started just five career NFL games and played a total of 360 snaps. If he performs well, he could have a legitimate shot at overtaking Taylor Heinicke for the No. 2 role. LB Junior Colson It felt like a somewhat disappointing rookie season for Colson in 2024. That makes for a crucial sophomore campaign. It seems like veteran Denzel Perryman will start alongside Daiyan Henley, but Colson needs to prove that he deserves legitimate playing time in 2025. We'll see how he performs on Thursday, our first look to see if he has taken a step forward this year. OL Jamaree Salyer Set to enter his fourth NFL season, Salyer started 31 games in his first two seasons in Los Angeles. The veteran saw a dramatic dip in playing time in 2024, but he has a chance to sneak his way back into the starting lineup. With some injuries along the offensive line, Salyer has gotten some first-team reps to begin camp. We'll see if he can sneak into a starting role at left guard, which would knock either Zion Johnson or Bradley Bozeman out. CB Ja'Sir Taylor Here's another guy that's been with the Chargers for a while, but with Taylor, he's vying to remain on this year's 53-man roster. He has had some bright spots in the early stages of training camp, and he always offers valuable special teams experience. His performance on defense throughout the preseason will be the deciding factor in his fate with this year's roster, though. WR Keandre Lambert-Smith The rookie fifth-rounder has been one of the big winners of training camp. With McConkey out, Lambert-Smith should see extended action and targets. We'll get our first real glimpse to see if his summer success translates to the playing field. If so, he may have a legitimate immediate impact on this year's offense. S RJ Mickens Another rookie to close this list out. Mickens is fighting for a spot on the roster, most notably with veteran Tony Jefferson. The former Clemson product has the traits to have a sustainable NFL career, but he will have to shine in front of the big lights to make the Chargers' 53-man roster.

Luis Gil lined up to make season debut Sunday for Yankees after latest Triple-A rehab outing
NEW YORK — Luis Gil is expected to make his season debut for the New York Yankees on Sunday at Miami after missing four months with a lat strain. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings Tuesday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Gil threw 50 of 75 pitches for strikes, allowing one run and three hits in his fourth minor league rehabilitation start. Injured in spring training, the right-hander is lined up to return this weekend against the Marlins after pitching 14 1/3 innings in the minors. 'I think that's the plan right now,' manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-5 on Tuesday night. Gil began facing hitters on June 21, when he threw 20 pitches of live batting practice at Yankee Stadium, and made his first rehab start July 13 for Double-A Somerset. 'I think for the most part, get through it hopefully successfully, and strike-throwing and carrying his stuff throughout the outing,' Boone said. 'You want to see those things, but we're also mindful of it that in a lot of ways it's spring training for him and building up. 'So there's definitely that next level of competitive juices and adrenaline that'll be flowing once he gets back up here.' Gil stopped a bullpen session on Feb. 28 because of tightness in his pitching shoulder. He went to New York for a second MRI that revealed a high-grade lat strain on March 3. He was shut down from throwing for at least six weeks after receiving the original diagnosis, and at the time the Yankees said he would not return until June at the earliest. On April 16 , the Yankees said Gil's throwing program would be delayed for about 10 days. The 27-year-old Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL East champions last year, striking out 171 and walking a major league-high 77 in 151 2/3 innings. Acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a 2018 trade, Gil made a successful return from Tommy John surgery and threw eight more innings in a pair of postseason starts as the Yankees reached the World Series for the first time since 2009. ___ AP MLB:

Former Steelers WR George Pickens lighting up Cowboys training camp
Of all the big moves the Pittsburgh Steelers made this offseason, the trade that sent wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys took us by surprise the most. After trading for wide receiver DK Metcalf and passing on a wide receiver in the 2025 NFL draft, we were excited to see the tandem of Metcalf and Pickens out there with Aaron Rodgers throwing them the football. Things didn't work out and now Pickens is in Dallas and forms one of the best tandems in the NFC with CeeDee Lamb. Meanwhile, the Steelers are sorting between Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson and Robert Woods for their other starter. At the same time, Pickens is lighting up Cowboys camp and seems to make a huge play every practice. With how aggressive the Steelers have been this offseason to add talent, every move they make is going to be under the microscope. If Pickens has a breakout campaign and the Steelers' passing offense struggles, there will be plenty of second-guessing of the trade. The Steelers drafted Pickens in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft out of Georgia. Pickens' talent was never in question but his maturity and work ethic were. The Steelers gave Pickens three seasons but he never seemed fully committed to playing in this offense.
