India to bid for both 2029 and 2031 World Athletics Championships

India will mount a "strategic" bid for both the 2029 and 2031 World Athletics Championships when the process begins later this year, hoping to get the hosting right of one of the two editions of the showpiece, national federation spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla said on Sunday (July 6, 2025). World Athletics, the sport's governing body, will announce the hosts of both the 2029 and 2031 editions in September 2026. The deadline for expression of interest by the member countries is October 1, 2025. "We are going to do strategic bidding for 2029 and 2031 (Championships). Both editions will be awarded together and whichever edition we get is fine," Sumariwalla, a vice-president of the World Athletics and former president of Athletics Federation of India (AFI), told PTI. "There is still some time (for the process to start). We are going to submit the bids," added Sumariwalla, who was here for the inaugural edition of the NC Classic international javelin event won by host and competitor Neeraj Chopra, the double Olympic medal-winning javelin superstar, on Saturday. The deadline for initial submission of application for the world championships is April 1, 2026. The interested countries will have to then submit the final bid application by August 5, 2026, before the World Athletics Council announces the host cities of the 2029 and 2031 editions of world championships. The AFI had decided to bid for a slew of high-profile events in view of India's hopes to host the 2036 Olympics. The Federation had earlier talked about bidding for the 2029 world championships but the idea of the "strategic" bidding for 2031 edition also could be due to the reason that Asia is hosting both the 2025 and 2027 editions of the showpiece, and it could be difficult for India to get the next one. The 2025 world championships will be held in Tokyo in September-October while the 2027 edition will be held in Beijing. In this scenario, India has a better chance to get the 2031 edition. Giving India the 2029 edition would mean that Asia would be hosting the showpiece three times in a row. The nearest event India has a chance of hosting is the junior world championships in 2028 for which the AFI has submitted expression of interest when WA chief Sebastian Coe visited the country towards the end of 2024. "We have already submitted expression of interest for the 2028 Junior World Championship," said Sumariwalla. World Athletics will announce the hosts of both the 2028 and 2030 editions of junior world championships in December 2025. The deadline for initial submission of bid application is September 22, 2025. The interested countries will have to then submit the final bid application by November 7, 2025. 'We are also bidding for World Athletics Relays after the next two editions. The hosts for the next two editions have already been announced,' he added. Botswana will host the 2026 edition of the World Relays while the 2028 edition will be held in the Bahamas.

Djokovic, Sinner reach fourth round as Krejcikova knocked out at Wimbledon

London, July 6 (UNI) Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic joined men's top seed Jannik Sinner to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon with a straight-sets win over Miomir Kecmanovic on Saturday. Chasing a record 25th Grand Slam singles title, Djokovic dominated the all-Serbian clash 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 to secure his 100th Wimbledon win - a milestone previously reached only by Martina Navratilova and Roger Federer. "It's very historic, it sounds very nice. I'm very grateful and privileged to be in this position," Djokovic said during his on-court interview. He will next face Australia's Alex de Minaur, who defeated August Holmgren of Denmark in straight sets. World No. 1 Sinner continued his flawless run, dispatching Spain's Pedro Martinez 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 in just one hour and 55 minutes. The Italian, yet to drop a set in the tournament, will meet 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov, who also cruised past Sebastian Ofner in straight sets. Tenth seed Ben Shelton of the United States maintained his perfect set record in this year's event, overpowering Marton Fucsovics of Hungary 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to set up a clash with Italy's Lorenzo Sonego. 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic of Croatia overcame Spaniard Jaume Munar 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, booking a showdown with Italy's Flavio Cobolli for a quarterfinal berth. Women's eighth seed Iga Swiatek of Poland avenged her Rome loss to American Danielle Collins with a dominant 6-2, 6-3 win. She next faces Denmark's Clara Tauson, who stunned 11th seed Elena Rybakina 7-6 (6), 6-3. Czech player Barbora Krejcikova saw her title defense end after a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Emma Navarro of the United States. Navarro will play 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who eased past Hailey Baptiste 6-1, 6-3. UNI XINHUA RKM

WATCH: Novak Djokovic's epic diving volley, his daughter's lovely post-match celebration after Serb becomes third player with 100 wins at Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic added another jewel to his crown as he became the second player to claim 100 wins in Men's Singles at the Championships in the Open Era, after Roger Federer. He is only the third player to achieve the feat, with Martina Navratilova the solitary female in the elite club. Navratilova, a nine-time Wimbledon singles champion, amassed 120 singles victories. Eight-time champion Federer reached 105 singles wins. The big goal for seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic, however, would still be to equal Federer's eight titles at the iconic grass-court major. Djokovic reached the milestone with his 6-3 6-0, 6-4 win in the third round over Miomir Kecmanovic. The 24-time Grand Slam champion now has a century of wins at two Majors – Roland Garros and Wimbledon. While at his favourite Major, the Australian Open, Djokovic has 99 wins. Federer had 100+ wins at Wimbledon and Australian Open. The record for most wins at a Major by a male player, unsurprisingly, belongs to Rafa Nadal at Roland Garros where he had a whopping 112 wins. Djokovic took control by winning nine consecutive games from 3-3 in the first set on Centre Court against his Serbian compatriot on Saturday, en route to his latest milestone. 'Any history that I make in my favorite tournament, I'm blessed,' said the sixth seed in an on-court interview. The 38-year-old Djokovic, playing in his 20th Wimbledon tournament, will next face No. 11 Alex de Minaur for a spot in the quarterfinals. Djokovic, who could potentially meet No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the semifinals, has lost the past two Wimbledon finals to Carlos Alcaraz. While Djokovic was at his best on the grass, from the stands it was his 7-year-old daughter who really wowed Wimbledon. Tara Djokovic's victory dance on Saturday brought a smile to dad's face. Everybody else's, too. Djokovic had just clinched his 100th Wimbledon singles win and was asked during his on-court interview to shed light on the little dance he's been doing recently. He said it's done to a song called 'Pump It Up.' 'There's a song with my kids — look my daughter's doing it right now,' a smiling Djokovic said as he looked into the crowd. 'You want to show it darling?' The TV camera then panned to Tara, who then showed everyone how it's done: pump your fists down, then left, right and overhead. The crowd roared. 'She's the master. It's a little tradition we have right now. Hopefully we can keep going so we can keep pumping more in Wimbledon.' Celebrating with the ones who matter the most ♥️ We've got another Djokovic celebration to add to the list – and his daughter Tara gave Centre Court a fantastic demonstration 😁#Wimbledon — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 5, 2025 Djokovic made just eight unforced errors through two sets and led 5-1 in the final set before Kecmanovic made him work for the victory. 'I have enjoyed myself very much except maybe the last couple of games. Things got a bit complicated,' he said, who finished with 60 winners and 19 unforced errors, along with 16 aces. The highlight of the match came in the eighth game of the first set, with Djokovic looking to break. His diving backhand volley winner at the net on the fourth deuce sailed past Kecmanovic, who slumped his shoulders as he watched the ball land in down the line. On the ground, Djokovic smiled and soaked in the applause for a moment before going on to earn the key break. No. Words. 🤯#Wimbledon | @DjokerNole — Wimbledon (@Wimbledon) July 6, 2025 'I try not to take anything for granted, particularly (at) this age, still going strong, still trying to compete with the young players and do some slides and some splits on the court, and push myself to the limit,' he said.
