Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger says the quiet part out loud about Minkah Fitzpatrick trade

USA Today12 hours ago
Minkah Fitzpatrick may not be a Pittsburgh Steeler anymore — but that hasn't stopped the legendary Ben Roethlisberger from defending his play regarding the recent splash plays narrative.
Many speculated that Fitzpatrick's lack of production played a role in facilitating his trade to the Miami Dolphins — and while Roethlisberger didn't deny that as a possibility, he argued that a downward trend in splash plays were a poor measure of talent.
"[Minkah] set his own bar really high,' Roethlisberger said on Tuesday's episode of his podcast, Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger. "…As a defensive back — corner, safety — if I'm a cornerback and I don't have a lot of interceptions or pass breakups, a lot of times it's because people don't throw it at me. And that also speaks to how good you are. So maybe his production is down because people just aren't taking those shots."
Roethlisberger acknowledged that analytics may paint a different picture — but Big Ben arguably hit the nail right on the head.
One could also blame the defensive game plan, as it's unfair to expect interceptions from Fitzpatrick when quarterbacks are throwing away from his side of the field — scheming him out of the game.
It hardly matters, though, as Fitzpatrick is heading back to the team that drafted him — while the Steelers have their new cornerback in Jalen Ramsey to potentially replicate their loss at the safety position.

Adam Rank projects Steelers to finish far below .500 in viral 2025 schedule prediction

The infamous Adam Rank has struck again — predicting an abysmal record for the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2025 season. Rank, known for his outlandish schedule predictions, completed his 2025 game-by-game projection — and the Steelers were estimated to finish 6–11. Here's how Rank predicted each Steelers game would go: The outspoken NFL Network analyst argued that four contests, in particular, would decide the Steelers' chances of finishing above .500: Week 10 at the Los Angeles Chargers, Week 11 vs. the Cincinnati Bengals, Week 13 vs. the Buffalo Bills, and Week 14 at the Baltimore Ravens. He predicted Pittsburgh to lose all four games. One might assume that after the Steelers completed one of the most productive and eventful offseasons in franchise history, respect for their 2025 postseason aspirations would follow. But they would be wrong. Pittsburgh once again has the opportunity to prove the doubters wrong in 2025 — as a playoff win, and potentially a Super Bowl title, hang in the balance of a loaded Steelers roster For up-to-date Steelers coverage, follow us on X @TheSteelersWire and give our Facebook page a like.

Steelers Rookie Tackle Claims 'Run Through Your Face' Style

Steelers Rookie Tackle Claims 'Run Through Your Face' Style originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers had a clear focus on improving their run defense in this year's NFL Draft. General manager Omar Khan followed his first-round pick of defensive tackle Derrick Harmon with Iowa's Yahya Black in the fifth round. Advertisement Since the Steelers already have a reliable nose tackle on the roster in Keeanu Benton, Pittsburgh could use Black as a four-technique lineman. Across five seasons at Iowa, he posted 117 combined tackles with 51 solo and 15 for loss, while adding 5.5 sacks, 11 passes defended and three forced fumbles. Black admitted that he's a "run stopper guy." "I've always been a run through your face type of person," Black said, via Teresa Varley of "I'm glad other people notice it too. I'm a run stopper guy, so I'm going to do everything in my power to stop the run and then develop in any other place that I need to." Advertisement Steelers' defensive line coach Karl Dunbar was impressed by Black at mandatory minicamp. 'He can play all over the defensive line,' Dunbar said, via Josh Carney of Steelers Depot. 'You know, he'll play over the center, he'll play at 4i. Right now, he is working at 4i, but we think he can play all over the place.' Dunbar did admit that there are things he has to continue to work on. "I think right now, his strength is the run game," Dunbar said. "He's a big, strong physical kid and we are working on his pass skills, and I think that's the thing we really can work on with no pads on. And we're gonna see what kind of physical guy he is when we put the pads on them."
