Alarming! India might face Internet blackout affecting entire digital infrastructure, it is due to..., Google, Jio and Airtel...

New Delhi: Yemen's Houthi rebels have been attacking the ships passing through the Red Sea, especially the ones connected to America and Israel. Now, their destructive actions can affect India as well. What threat does India face from the Houthis? Houthis' actions could affect India's internet network. Most of India's internet cables pass through this route. If these cables are damaged, then the internet in India may come to a standstill. To avoid such a situation, cable companies have intensified their efforts. The internet of companies like Google, Airtel and Jio is under threat. Why is the Red Sea route important for India? The Red Sea route is considered very important for India's digital economy. It can also be said that the digital economy rests on the cables passing through here. These cables work to connect India to the world's internet. From here, important cables like Google's Blue-Raman, Airtel's 2Africa and SEA-ME-WE 6 (South East Asia – Middle East – Western Europe 6), and Reliance Jio's India-Europe-Xpress are reaching the seashores of Mumbai and Chennai. What measures are internet cable companies taking? According to a report of the Economic Times, the cable companies have started preparations to deal with this situation, as part of which, more fibre cables are being added, so that they can be used if internet cables are cut. Seeing the increasing danger in the Red Sea, Lightstorm Group CEO and Managing Director Amjit Gupta says that tension has increased in this area, and even if there is a problem, it will be very difficult to repair it. This is the reason why many companies are also working on a plan to lay cables on land, leaving the Red Sea. However, this is an expensive process and doing so will increase the expenses of data centres and cloud service providers. Why are Houthis so dangerous? Yemen's Houthi rebels have sunk 2 commercial cargo ships in the last month. Even when ships go to repair the cables laid in the Red Sea, the Houthi rebels extort a ransom from them. The Houthis have also tried to put pressure on some countries by threatening to cut the cables. The USA has also launched many air strikes on the Houthis to stop them, but they have not stopped their activities.

While BSNL and Vi offer cheaper plans, they mostly serve low-spending users and this is why, the new Reliance Jio plan has reached the masses. The telecom sector is now focusing on increasing average revenue per user (ARPU), with the next tariff hike expected in 2026. What will users get in Reliance Jio Rs 189 plan? Notably, the special thing about this plan is that its price is less than Rs 200. BSNL soft launches Quantum 5G FWA In another major development, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the soft launch of BSNL Quantum 5G FWA (Fixed Wireless Access). This indigenous, SIM-less fixed-wireless-access solution delivers fibre-like speeds over 5G radio, according to an official release issued by the Ministry of Communications, carried by ANI. Notably, BSNL is the now first Indian operator to showcase a production-grade SIM-less 5G service, which is built on BSNL's Direct-to-Device platform so the customer's CPE auto-authenticates – no physical SIM required, as per a report carried by news agency ANI.
