Kota Kinabalu: A 44-year-old year old man was fined RM4,000 or seven months jail by the Magistrate's Court here Friday for threatening to kill his wife. Kamirin Ebit pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to committing the offence against his 39-year-old wife by saying 'Ku sembelih kau pun boleh bah (I can slaughter you too)', on June 12, this year, at 10pm, in front of a house at Angkasa Apartment, Menggatal. The court heard from the prosecution that on the night of the incident, the complainant was at home when an argument broke out with Kamirin, who is her husband. During the quarrel, he threatened her with the said words, causing her to fear for her safety. She later lodged a police report which led to Kamirin arrest on July 4. Meanwhile, a 23-year-old man was sentenced to seven months jail for keeping a stolen car. Baru Junie pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali to keeping a stolen Proton Saga belonging to one Winona Emmanuel, on May 26, this year, at 12.05am, at the traffic light, Jalan Tuaran Bypass, Manggatal – Tuaran. The charge is framed under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between six months and five years and liability of a fine on conviction. The prosecution informed the court that the car was reported stolen from a workshop in Putatan on May 25. In the same court, a 35-year-old man was jailed six months for a similar offence. Walter Jumain admitted to keeping stolen items comprising several identity cards, bank cards, a car key, an Apple Watch, and a laptop belonging to one Jude Ooi on July 24, at 9.30am in a rented room at Putatan town. The court heard from the prosecution that the said items were reported missing from the complainant's house in Penampang on July 24. Man nabbed after failed snatch theft attempt
SHAH ALAM: A man was arrested after his attempted snatch theft in Setia Alam failed when the victim fought back, causing the suspect to fall off his motorcycle. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the incident took place at Jalan Setia Prima H U13/H at 7.07pm on Saturday. "The 30 year-old suspect tried to snatch the victim's belongings but failed when the victim resisted. "The struggle caused the suspect to fall off his Yamaha 135LC motorcycle, which carried a fake registration number," he said in a statement today. Iqbal said the suspect attempted to flee the scene but was caught by members of the public who came to assist. Following the arrest, police seized several items belonging to the suspect, including the motorcycle, its ignition key and the clothes worn during the incident. He said the suspect has been remanded for four days from today to Aug 7 to assist investigations under Section 393 of the Penal Code for attempted robbery. "During interrogation, the suspect also admitted to involvement in two other snatch theft cases, both being investigated under Section 392 of the Penal Code," he said. The public is advised to remain vigilant when walking near roadsides or in open areas to prevent falling victim to such crimes.

Iranian suspects in Penang hypnosis scam target tourists
KEPALA BATAS: The five Iranians detained on Sunday for allegedly stealing money from foreign tourists in George Town are suspected members of a trained syndicate skilled in deception. Penang acting police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin revealed the group entered Malaysia on social visit passes and rented a car to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Penang on July 27. Initial investigations show the syndicate operated from a Batu Ferringhi homestay. Though active in theft cases, no police reports were filed, indicating minor losses. Media reports confirmed the arrest of three men and two women, aged 19 to 35, at a George Town mall under Ops Tourist. Between July 30 and August 1, three theft reports were lodged by tourists from Taiwan, the Netherlands, and Syria in Pulau Tikus and Jalan Penang. Police seized foreign currencies, two vehicles, and marijuana during the arrests. Mohd Alwi stated losses totaled RM3,000 across three cases, with investigations ongoing for possible links to other districts. Authorities are collaborating with the Iranian Embassy for suspect details. The group is remanded until August 6 under the Penal Code and Dangerous Drugs Act. Child psychologist clears Zayn Rayyan's parents of neglect claims
PETALING JAYA: A child psychologist testified in court that the late Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin had not been neglected or abused, countering allegations against his parents. Dr Noor Aishah Rosli, founder of CPC International psychology clinic, reviewed medical reports from Selayang and Sungai Buloh Hospitals, finding no evidence of mistreatment. 'The reports show no indication of neglect or abuse,' Dr Noor Aishah stated during the trial of Ismanira Abdul Manaf, who faces child neglect charges. The psychologist clarified that neglect must be consistent over time to be classified as such, citing guidelines from the American Psychiatric Association (APA). She explained that occasional lapses, such as a missed meal due to a guardian's illness, do not constitute neglect. However, prolonged deprivation—such as a child consistently being left to find their own food—could qualify. Regarding the amended charge against Ismanira, Dr Noor Aishah noted the wording 'likely' introduces uncertainty, as it does not definitively prove physical injury occurred. When asked if the charge clearly indicated neglect, she replied that it lacked specificity. Judge Syahliza Warnoh had earlier ordered Ismanira to enter her defence after the prosecution established a prima facie case, while her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, was acquitted. The couple had been accused of neglecting their autistic son between December 5 and 6, 2023, at Idaman Apartment in Damansara Damai. Charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, they faced up to 20 years' imprisonment or a RM50,000 fine if convicted. The trial resumes tomorrow. - Bernama
