Dakota Johnson criticizes Hollywood's lack of originality and explains Madame Web failure

Dakota Johnson has voiced strong criticism of Hollywood's creative decline, calling out the industry's over-reliance on remakes and algorithm-driven decisions. During her appearance on Hot Ones on June 12, the Fifty Shades of Grey star described the film industry as 'a bit of a mess,' blaming studios for making decisions by committee, often led by executives who "don't even really watch movies." Johnson added that studios tend to replicate past successes rather than take creative risks, resulting in repetitive content. She expressed frustration with the lack of original storytelling and said she now prefers projects where she has more creative input, particularly as a producer at her company, TeaTime Pictures. The actress also reflected on the disappointing performance of her 2024 film Madame Web, which earned her a Razzie for Worst Actress. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, she revealed the film shifted dramatically during production. 'It started as one thing and became something else,' Johnson said, distancing herself from the final result. Due to the experience, Johnson confirmed she's unlikely to take on another superhero role, stating, 'I don't make sense in that world.' Meanwhile, Johnson's personal life has also made headlines, as she and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin recently ended their nearly eight-year relationship. Sources claim the split was mutual and long in the making, with Johnson especially saddened by parting from Martin's children. As she steps further into producing, Johnson seems focused on reshaping her Hollywood journey.

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin split after nearly 8 years together

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin have broken up once more, bringing an end to their nearly eight-year, on-and-off relationship. Sources have confirmed to PEOPLE that the split feels 'final this time.' Representatives for both stars have yet to comment on the matter. The actress and the Coldplay frontman were first linked romantically in 2017 and had been engaged for several years, although they were never in a rush to marry. Engagement rumours had first surfaced in 2020, but it was later revealed that they had been engaged for a while before confirming it publicly. The couple had appeared publicly together as recently as May 2025, when they were photographed in Malibu. Earlier in January, they were also seen in India, where Martin was touring with Coldplay. Despite ongoing breakup rumours in 2024, the couple had been spotted together in various locations, showing no signs of a split at the time. Although their relationship had its ups and downs, the couple seemed to be in a good place before the latest breakup, leaving fans wondering what comes next for the pair. Dakota Johnson, who stars in Materialists, opens up about her perspective on relationships in a recent interview, challenging traditional views on marriage and divorce.
