Assam film actress arrested in hit-and-run case as victim dies
Guwahati Police Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Borah told PTI that the actress was arrested around 1:30 a.m. after being detained on Tuesday (July 29, 2025).
"We have produced her in the court and sought five days of police remand. We are waiting for the court order now," he said.
The accident took place at Dakkhingaon area in the early hours of Friday (July 25, 2025), when an SUV allegedly driven by the actress hit a two-wheeler, Mr. Borah said.
"Samiul Haque, who was riding the two-wheeler, was critically injured. He was taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment. From there, he was taken to Apollo Hospital for advanced treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries yesterday," he added.
The DCP said the initial FIR did not name the actress, who was called for questioning the next day of the accident.
"The earlier sections were bailable. However, with the victim dying, we added non-bailable sections in the case and arrested her," he said.
When asked why the police did not take action earlier, Mr. Borah claimed that the traffic branch did not know about the accident.
A CCTV footage of the accident showed that Haque, a student of Nalbari Polytechnic Institute, was run over by the speeding SUV.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the actress did not stop to check on the victim and instead fled from the scene.
Friends of Haque, who was returning home after repairing streetlights of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), chased down the SUV to an apartment complex at Kahilipara and confronted her.
Mr. Borah said, "Ms. Kashyap's vehicle was penalised several times for speeding and many challans were issued in different districts." Meanwhile, forensic experts were called for examination of the two vehicles. They have done a preliminary survey, and a report is expected within the next seven days, an official said.
Haque hailed from a poor family and was supporting his education by working part-time with the GMC.

However, she handed them a two-day-old boy born to an Assamese couple, under the pretext that the child was biologically theirs. According to the remand report, when the complainants confronted Dr Namratha about it, she "verbally accepted her mistake" and sought time to resolve it. "But the couple could not reach her after that despite trying multiple times," the report added. Cops have also found that another accused, Dr N Sadanandam of Gandhi Hospital, used to supply anaesthesia to Dr Namratha despite knowing that the centre was running without registration. The Telangana Medical Council (TGMC) has served a show cause notice to both the jailed doctors. Bangladesh: Student leader arrested on extortion charge
Dhaka, Aug 1 (PTI) Bangladesh police on Friday arrested a student leader on extortion charges, nearly a week after taking into custody five of his comrades, including two prominent figures of Students against Discrimination, in the same case. The Students against Discrimination (SAD) had led last year's mass protest campaign that eventually toppled prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League regime on August 5. 'Our detective branch arrested Jane Alam Apu from Dhaka's Wari area. Apu is the sixth accused to be arrested in the same case of extortion," joint commissioner of police Mohammad Nasirul Islam said. On July 26, police arrested five student leaders, including SAD figures Ibrahim Hossain Munna and Abdur Razzak Riyad, sparking a nationwide uproar. Their arrest prompted the SAD to expel them immediately and dissolve all its units excepting the central committee. Munna was SAD's Dhaka city convenor while Riyad was the convenor of the platform's Private Universities Committee. According to police, the group first went to former lawmaker of now disbanded Awami League Shammi Ahmed's residence at posh Gulshan area in the capital on July 17 and demanded Taka 50 lakh from her husband Abu Zafar since his 'fascist collaborator wife' was not at the house. On that day, they extorted Taka 10 lakh from him and on July 26 they went again to the house to collect the remaining Taka 40 lakh when police appeared at the scene and arrested them responding to a call from the family. The police action came as CCTV footage showing the extortionists receiving cash in the guest room of a residence went viral on social media. The SAD had spearheaded the violent street movement leading to Hasina's ouster. Three days after she fled to India, Muhammad Yunus took over as the head of the interim government on August 8. Malayalam actor Kalabhavan Navas found dead in hotel
Kochi, Aug 1 (PTI) Malayalam film actor and mimicry artist Kalabhavan Navas was found dead in a hotel in Chottanikkara here on Friday evening, police said. The incident came to light when the staff of the hotel, where Navas (51) was staying for a film shoot, alerted authorities. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead, police said. Police suspect he suffered a cardiac arrest.
