More rainfall activity to bring respite from heat across T.N. from July 16
The Nilgiris and its neighbouring districts may receive heavy rainfall till the end of this week. From July 16 to 18, districts around Chennai, including Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram, are likely to see significant rainfall.
The Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, has predicted a drop in the maximum temperature across the State from Wednesday. A yellow alert has been issued , for the Nilgiris from July 15, with heavy rain expected to cover parts of north Tamil Nadu by July 16. An orange alert has been issued for the Western Ghats between July 17 and 20.
Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Ranipet may receive heavy rainfall on July 17. On July 18, intense rain of up to 13 cm may cover six districts, including Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore.
P. Senthamarai Kannan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said the well-marked low pressure area would influence westerly wind convergence over the State, bringing light to moderate rain in some parts this week.
On Monday too, parts of the State sizzled, with Madurai Airport recording the hottest temperature for the day, at 39.4 degrees Celsius. Chennai's Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded above normal temperatures of 37.7 degrees Celsius and 38.7 degrees Celsius.
Evening thunderstorms provide only temporary relief, as hot westerlies trigger scorching heat the following day. The same weather trend may continue on Tuesday, with maximum temperature likely to soar by two-four degrees Celsius above average in a few pockets of the State.
This week's wet spell may increase the overall southwest monsoon rainfall, which is 9% below its seasonal average as on Monday, officials said.

Another youth drowned while crossing the overflowing Bamani river in Dholpur. Authorities are monitoring vulnerable areas for further risks. Himachal continues to face monsoon fury Heavy rains have claimed 105 lives in Himachal Pradesh between 20 June and 14 July, as per the SDMA. Of these, 61 deaths were due to landslides, flash floods, electrocution and related weather events, while 44 were caused by rain-related road accidents. Mandi, Kangra, and Hamirpur are the worst-hit districts. Continuous rainfall has led to damaged roads, unsafe terrain, and hazardous travel conditions, prompting advisories and disaster response efforts across the state.

Daytime temperatures remained below the seasonal average, with the maximum between 32 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius and the minimum hovering around 24 degrees Celsius to 26 degrees Celsius. Winds from the southeast picked up in the afternoon and eased by night. The IMD forecasts partly cloudy skies and light showers over the next two days, with temperatures ranging between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius. July 16 and 17 are likely to see isolated rain and thunder, offering brief evening relief. Delhi airport issued a travel advisory due to sudden rain and gusty winds, advising passengers to check flight statuses and prefer Metro travel. This stretch of mild, breezy weather is expected to continue, even as other parts of northern and central India brace for heavy rain.

Himachal: 4 dead in rain-related incidents, Met issues ‘orange' alert for heavy rains in 3 districts
Shimla: Four people died in rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 57 during the ongoing monsoon season and the local Met office has issued an 'orange' alert of heavy to very heavy rains in three districts of the state on Tuesday. Two people were drowned, one each in Kullu and Kangra districts, one died after being bitten by a snake in Bilapsur, while one was killed after falling from height, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). Details of the deceased are awaited. Heavy to very heavy rains are likely at isolated places of Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur on Tuesday, the Met Department said on Monday. It also issued a 'yellow' alert of heavy rains in three to seven out of 12 districts till Friday. Himachal Pradesh has suffered losses of more than Rs 786 crore in the ongoing monsoon season and 192 roads, including 146 in the disaster-hit Mandi district, are closed for vehicular traffic due to rains, while 745 water supply schemes and 65 power distribution transformers were affected as on Monday evening, the SEOC said. From the onset of monsoon on June 20 till July 13, as many as 105 people died -- 61 in rain-related incidents and 44 in road accidents -- 184 have been injured, while 35 are missing. The state has witnessed 31 flash floods, 22 cloudbursts, and 18 landslides, it added. Meanwhile, light to moderate rains lashed parts of the state, and Rajgarh in the Sirmaur district received 72 mm of rain since Sunday evening followed by Jubbarhatti 59.2 mm, Khadrala 42.4, Pachhad 38 mm, Mandi 26.4 mm, Bhuntar 22 mm, Shimla, 18.5 mm, Dharamshala 16 mm, Shilaroo 14.2 mm, Kufri 12.9 mm, Seobagh 12.2 mm, and Rohru 10 mm. Search operations are still underway to trace the 27 who were washed away after 10 cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides wreaked havoc in various parts of Mandi on the night of June 30-July 1 and resulted in the deaths of 15 people, officials said. Keylong was the coldest at night, recording a low of 11.3 degrees Celsius while Una was hottest in the day with a high of 32.6 degrees Celsius.
