The Science-Backed Workout Jason Kelce Is Using to Build Muscle and Lose Fat
Jason Kelce teamed up with exercise scientist Mike Israetel to transform his physique.
After dropping more than 30 pounds, Kelce is entering a new chapter in his fitness journey: bodybuilding. Kelce and Israetel linked up for a YouTube video, where Israetel showed him the ropes guided Kelce through a push-day hypertrophy workout.
Kelce explained he still wants to feel big and strong, but no longer wants to carry 295 pounds on his frame. At the time of filming, he said he weighed 266 pounds. His ultimate goal is build muscle while continuing to lose fat.
"I would like to preserve the joint health and things that I have left to a certain degree," he says.
During the session, he asked Israetel how recovered he should feel between sets during a hypertrophy phase—and how long to rest before moving to the next exercise.
"The best answer is whenever you're really ready to do another hard set again, which requires four check boxes to be checked. One is that you're no longer breathing super heavy. The otherone is how do you feel systemically wise? Like do you feel strong?" Israetel answers.
The last two boxes to check: making sure your target muscles and synergist muscles have also recovered.

Before getting serious weight on the barbell, Kelce completed a couple of warmup sets.
Inverted Skull Crusher
Sets: 3
Reps: 10-15 on Smith Machine 3 sets 10-15 reps
They performed the workout on a Smith machine with no real weight loaded, making it an accessible move you can do at almost any gym. Israetel used the cue: "Elbows in, touch your chin, and come up."
Deficit Pushups
Sets : 3
Reps: 10
"Come down so only your chest touches the ground," Israetel cues.
Super ROM Lateral Raises
Sets: 1
Reps: 25
Though it's a high number of reps, Israetel allowed Kelce to break these up and shake his arms out. Gwyneth Paltrow is Astronomer's ‘temporary spokesperson' in new video
There's a lot of buzz around Astronomer, the data infrastructure company that skyrocketed into public attention after its executives - now former executives - gave us the viral Coldplay 'kiss cam' moment. With all this recent popularity, the business brought on some extra help, hiring a 'temporary spokesperson' with experience in Coldplay internet fame: Gwyneth Paltrow. 'I've been hired on a very temporary basis to speak on behalf of the 300+ employees at Astronomer,' the actress said in the minute-long video posted to social media Friday. The Goop chief executive happens to be the ex-wife of Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin and co-author of the original 'break-the-internet' breakup statement when the pair announced their 'conscious uncoupling' in 2014. If you're searching for answers to the company's real frequently-asked questions, you won't find them in the tongue-in-cheek clip. The questions 'OMG! What the actual f' and 'How is your social media team holding' get comically cut off by Paltrow as she explained the much less juicy details of Astronomer's business. 'We've been thrilled so many people have a newfound interest in data workflow automation,' Paltrow said. Astronomer's chief executive Andy Byron and human resources chief Kristin Cabot both resigned after they were filmed cuddling at a Coldplay concert in Boston earlier this month. They appeared on the arena video board in a 'kiss cam' segment before looking uncomfortable, with Cabot turning around and Byron ducking out of sight as Martin quipped from the stage that the two might be having an affair. Mark Borkowski, a British public relations and crisis consultant, described using Paltrow to front a video parodying the incident as 'utter genius' that shows the company has a sense of humor. 'It's a savvy use of media to create a viral moment,' he told The Washington Post in a phone interview Saturday. 'In a way you're laughing with everybody else.' Astronomer choosing Paltrow will not go unnoticed, Borkowski said. 'Astronomer is a meme now. Owning the ridiculous nature of how it became a meme is far better than apologizing for it.' A representative for Paltrow didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. As for how he advises clients caught in such situations, Borkowski said acting in a dignified way and 'using as few words as possible' is always the best approach. Paltrow's cameo is reminiscent of the scared Peloton wife discourse from 2019. After actress Monica Ruiz's worry-stricken expression in a Peloton holiday commercial became the butt of internet jokes, she laughed it off, later using her horrified face for an Aviation Gin ad. Forget push-ups — according to a scientist, these are the only two upper-body exercises you'll ever need

If you're looking to build your upper body, it turns out endless push-ups might not be the best way to go. According to Coach Pak Androulakis-Korakakis (who goes by Dr Pak), a Sports Scientist, researcher, and coach who specializes in the science of strength training, you only need two exercises to build your upper body. Read on to find out more. As a reminder, if you're new to exercise or you're returning to exercise following an injury or pregnancy, it's always a good idea to seek advice from a professional before taking on a new workout routine. What are the exercises? 'These two exercises are like the squat and deadlift for your upper body,' says Dr. Pak but unlike squats and deadlifts, you don't need tons of equipment — you can do both efficiently using just your body weight. The exercises in question? Chin-ups and dips. Here's how to do both exercises: Chin-ups To do a chin-up, you'll need a pull-up bar of some sort. These can be found in most gyms, but also in local parks for free. Dr. Pak says chin-ups are one of the simplest ways to get a bigger back and biceps — in fact, they target your chest, front delts, triceps, biceps and lats. He recommends going into a full stretch on the way down from your chin-up, keeping your muscles under tension for longer. Work until failure, and if you can do 15 reps easily, think about adding weight to the exercise, using a weighted belt or weighted vest. Here's how to do a chin-up with good form: Although chin-ups and pull-ups look similar, there's one major difference; the way you grip the bar. To perform a chin-up, you'll need to hold the bar with your palms facing you. Grab the bar with an underhand grip, with your hands shoulder-width apart. Keep your body in a straight line with your core engaged, and pull yourself up until your chin is above the bar. Hold this position for a moment, then lower back to the starting position. If you want to build up to an unaided chin-up, you can use resistance bands for support. Loop the band around the bar and place your knees into the band before starting the chin-up. As you develop strength, you can reduce the band's thickness to increase the intensity. Check out the best resistance bands for your workouts here. Dips The next exercise to try is dips, which work the chest, triceps, and front delts. You'll need a set of dip bars for this exercise, but again, these are super common and you'll find them in most gyms. Dr. Pak recommends going as low as you can comfortably go at the bottom of the movement, keeping your elbows close to your body, and your torso leaning slightly forward. Again, if these are too easy, you can always add weight with a best or vest, but for most people, you'll get a serious upper body workout using just your bodyweight. Here's how to do dips using a dip bar: Raise yourself onto two dip bars with straight arms Lower your body down to the ground, bending at the elbow. If you can keep going until your shoulders are lower than your elbows. Push into the bar, and lift your body up until you're back in your starting position, with your arms straight. What's the workout? Dr. Pak recommends doing these two exercises, plus a few sets of lateral raises, using a set of the best adjustable dumbbells, to work your entire upper body. Alternatively, use the two exercises above for an equipment-free workout, and do them as a superset. A superset in strength training means doing two exercises back-to-back with minimal or no rest in between. You'll often target opposing muscle groups, for example, your chest, followed by your back. Supersets are great if you're short on time. How running for 75 minutes a week could help you live longer — and feel younger

Only those who hit 75 minutes or more saw significant benefits to their telomere length, even after researchers controlled for differences in age, lifestyle, and medical history. In fact, the difference was big enough to suggest runners could be roughly 12 years biologically younger than those who don't run regularly. People who ran less than that? Well, they pretty much looked the same as the non-runners. While the results are compelling, it's worth being cautious. The results come from a single snapshot in time and rely on people accurately reporting their exercise, which can sometimes be optimistic. Still, the message is clear and encouraging: making running a regular habit might just be one of the simplest ways to help your cells stay spry. How to make it work for you The best part is that 75 minutes per week breaks down to just over 10 minutes (and 43 seconds if we are being pernickety) a day. That's a realistic goal for many people. If you're just getting started, try alternating walking and running using a beginner-friendly approach like Jeffing.
