Mercedes-Benz has opened the world's first Maybach Brand Center in Seoul as the German luxury automaker emphasizes the importance of the Korean market for its top-end brand.
'With the opening of the world's first Maybach Brand Center, we are taking the next step in redefining customer experience at the highest level,' said Mathias Geisen, Mercedes-Benz board member in charge of marketing and sales, during the opening ceremony of the new facility on Monday.
'Korea is not only one of our key markets — it is also a place where the spirit of modern luxury is deeply appreciated and constantly evolving. This new space is our response: a place where exclusivity, craftsmanship and personal connection come together in a way only Mercedes-Maybach can offer.'
The five-story, 2,795-square-meter Maybach-only building is located in Apgujeong in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. This premium retail district is home to major high-end global brands, as well as the Galleria Luxury Hall East and West department stores featuring luxury fashion brands.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the exterior of the Maybach Brand Center sought to reinterpret the country's traditional design heritage to create a contemporary and timeless architectural language. Its pleated surface and curved roofline drew inspiration from Korea's traditional clothing and housing, Hanbok and Hanok. Inside the building, a cathedral-type interior with a high ceiling gives the first floor a feeling of grandness.
To celebrate the center's opening, Mercedes-Benz launched three Korea-only limited edition models of the Mercedes-Maybach Silver Lining -- 10 units of the S-Class, a GLS and an EQS SUV. The all-new Mercedes-Maybach SL, an ultra-luxurious two-seater convertible, was also showcased for the first time in the country.
According to Mercedes-Benz Korea, the Maybach Brand Center will operate on a reservation-only basis, with each customer welcomed by a dedicated sales consultant and product expert upon arrival. The new facility will offer exclusive membership services, professional valet parking, signature food and beverages, and a variety of personalized programs tailored specifically for Mercedes-Maybach owners.
'Since its official debut in 2004 in Korea, Mercedes-Maybach has become the preferred choice for Korea's distinguished leaders, visionary entrepreneurs, and cultural icons -- those who seek impeccable quality and profound expression of success and dignity,' said Mathias Vaitl, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Korea.
'We are privileged that more than 10,000 customers have chosen Mercedes-Maybach, marking Korea as one of the most important Maybach markets globally. We are confident that the new Maybach Brand Center will exceed the expectations of our valued customers.'
Despite its relatively smaller market size, Korea was the third best-selling market for Maybach last year behind the US and China as it sold 1,363 units. Since its launch in 2004, Mercedes-Benz Korea logged a record-high of 2,596 Maybach vehicles sold in the country in 2023. The high-end brand announced in November 2024 that Maybach sales had surpassed the 10,000 milestone.
Although Mercedes-Benz operates Maybach Atelier, the first brand concept center and showroom established in 2022, in Shanghai, China, Mercedes-Benz Korea noted that the newly opened center is unique worldwide as the brand's only showroom in which an entire building has been dedicated solely to the Maybach brand.

First Turk direct flight links Korea, central Asia and Europe INCHEON — Turkmenistan started its first-ever direct passenger flight between Incheon and Ashgabat on Monday, marking a milestone in connectivity between Korea and Central Asia. The new route, operating once a week every Monday boosts access to Turkmenistan and eases onward connections to major European cities such as Frankfurt, Milan and Istanbul. With Ashgabat — Turkmenistan's capital and a key Silk Road city — as its hub, the route is a strategic bridge between East and West. Speaking at the launch ceremony, Lee Hack-young, Deputy Speaker of Korea's National Assembly, hailed the route as a historic moment amid deepening Turkmen-Korean ties. 'This new route will serve as a bridge connecting people and cities, towns and communities,' said Lee. 'It will open new prospects for businesses, allow students to share each other's languages and cultures, and invite travelers to experience our rich and unique histories. More than a flight, this route will bring new energy to people-to-people exchanges and contribute to the safety and well-being of our citizens.' Turkmenistan's vice minister of transport, Nazar Kakabayev, thanked Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov for modernizing the county's aviation sector. Kakabayev highlighted recent investments in modern aircraft and aviation infrastructure as part of a broader national transport development strategy. 'We are opening a new chapter in our transport relations,' said Kakabayev Nazar, adding that since April 2023, regular cargo services have significantly enhanced trade, covering over 100,000 kilometers and transporting more than 9,000 metric tons of goods. Among the flight's first passengers was 21-year-old Korean traveler Kwon Gyeong-min. 'It's my first trip to Europe, and being the first passenger feels special and meaningful,' Kwon told The Korea Herald. 'Turkmenistan has many unique tourist attractions, including the 'Derweze gas crater' next to the hellfire site. I believe that with this new route, more routes will be added in the future.' Turkmenistan Ambassador to Korea Begench Durdyyev highlighted the importance of the strategic new route and a series of high-level exchanges. 'Now, following the start of cargo flights in April 2023, the introduction of direct passenger flights between our two countries marks a new beginning,' said Durdyyev. 'This is not the time to relax, but to continue working together with determination to reach new goals,' Durdyyev said, noting bilateral trade had surged by 70 percent in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Chairman Koo Ja-kyun eyes US data center boom with speed, custom solutions HANOI, Vietnam — LS Electric Chairman and CEO Koo Ja-kyun is spearheading efforts to strengthen the company's foothold in the US power systems market, buoyed by the rapid expansion of the artificial intelligence-driven data center industry. 'Compared to the Big Four power system suppliers in the US — Schneider Electric, Siemens Energy, Eaton Corporation and ABB — LS Electric delivers to clients more than twice as fast and at more competitive prices,' Koo said during a group interview at LS Electric's Bac Ninh plant in Hanoi, Vietnam. Koo was visiting the country ahead of the Elects Vietnam 2025 exhibition, scheduled for July 16-18 in Ho Chi Minh City. The surge in AI-powered digital services across industries since the COVID-19 pandemic has driven global tech giants to accelerate investments in AI data centers. Koo emphasized that LS Electric is targeting this market, which requires server racks equipped with high power-density distribution systems — a sector where legacy US power companies have struggled to meet soaring demand. Previously, LS Electric's main clients in North America were manufacturing plants and utility providers, which together account for around 50 percent of the company's total sales. To expand its reach, the company is considering acquiring US-based power distribution panel suppliers to gain deeper access to what Koo described as a 'surprisingly conservative' electrical market — one where customers often remain loyal to the same suppliers for decades, in contrast to the fast-moving IT industry. In the meantime, LS Electric has steadily gained ground by servicing and customizing products originally supplied by US competitors, winning over big tech clients in the process. It also conducts performance testing at its Power Testing & Technology Center located within its Cheongju plant in Korea. 'Our 'fast and precise' customization strategies are gaining attention from US clients, with some even requesting exclusive supply agreements,' said Koo, noting the company is beginning to establish a track record in an industry traditionally dominated by local players. LS Electric is also the first Korean company to complete UL certification for its power distribution panels — a requirement often necessary in the US to meet safety and performance standards. Looking ahead, Koo said that transitioning from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) power systems could be South Korea's next major growth opportunity, likening it to the country's approximately 32-year transition from 110V to the globally adopted 220V standard, known for its higher efficiency. 'The market for DC products is rapidly expanding,' Koo noted. 'Key technologies — including energy storage systems, solar and wind power — all operate on DC. While DC is typically converted to AC for usage, using DC directly eliminates the energy loss during conversion. This global trend toward DC systems presents a major opportunity for South Korea to lead in the future of the power industry.' 'Electricity powers AI competitiveness — and AI boosts national competitiveness,' he added. As part of its strategy to expand in the North American market, LS Electric in April completed construction of its first US manufacturing and R&D facility in Bastrop, Texas. The company plans to begin production of medium- and low-voltage power equipment and distribution systems for local AI data centers within this year — a move aimed at increasing market share while mitigating tariff pressure in the US.

Unclear how negotiations are progressing; suitable special envoy must be sent to US President Lee Jae Myung presided over a general meeting of the National Security Council on July 10, three weeks before the US is scheduled to impose tariffs. People expected the meeting to deal mostly with the issue of negotiations with the US over its tariffs. But officials related to trade were absent from the meeting. During the meeting, Lee called for efforts to mend inter-Korean ties. He was also reportedly briefed by the Ministry of National Defense on security issues, including an early transition of wartime operational control. Reportedly, US tariffs, an issue at hand, were barely discussed. A Federation of Korean Industries survey released on July 11 found that 9 out of 10 Korean export companies said they could not cope with US tariffs if they go over 15 percent. The "reciprocal" tariff that US President Donald Trump vowed to levy on South Korea is 25 percent. The South Korean economy, buttressed by exports, could be in jeopardy if hit by high US tariffs. Companies and people feel uneasy, and yet it is unclear how tariff negotiations with the US are progressing. The South Korean trade minister met with the US Commerce Secretary twice in the US before returning home, but no agreement reportedly came out of the meetings. The national security adviser went to the US, too, arousing expectations for a package deal involving tariffs and security, but he came back without accomplishments to speak of. Meanwhile, an early transition of wartime operational control, not tariffs, attracted media attention at home. The government should focus on tariff negotiations at this time. Wartime operational control transition and inter-Korean ties seem out of step with the situation. Korea must consider its security reality: it lacks the ability to deter North Korea's nuclear attacks independently. An early takeover of wartime operational control from the US, if materialized, would have severe aftereffects as it is directly linked to US Forces Korea's readjustment and reduction. Seoul must not rush a decision on the issue but examine it prudently from various angles. It would be a foolish choice to first request that the US hand over wartime operational control. Korea's leading industries, including semiconductors, cars and steel, are sitting on the edge of a precipice due to the ticking US tariff bomb. The government in Seoul must concentrate on tariff negotiations to make a deal. Korea could consider increasing its defense budget and its share of USFK stationing costs as leverage in tariff negotiations. The trade minister fronts Korea's tariff negotiation team, but despite his title, he is only a vice-ministerial official under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Tariffs that Trump vows to impose are an issue that could upset both Korea's economy and security. This is too grave a matter for a vice-ministerial official such as the trade minister to deal with. A summit is desirable to solve tariff issues, but no answer has come yet from the US. The national security adviser visited the US but there has been no talk of a summit. Less than three weeks remain until Aug. 1, when US tariffs will take effect. Yet signs of a forthcoming agreement are nowhere to be seen. To guard national interests in negotiations with the US, Korea must figure out Trump's intentions and let him know Seoul's positions properly. Sending a special envoy to the US could be one way of doing so. The envoy should not necessarily meet with the US president face-to-face. He or she should be able to contact a figure who understands Trump's mind and who can put Korea's demands across to him. As a special envoy, Korea needs an old hand at diplomacy toward the US who has a lot of personal connections and information. Some special envoy candidates reportedly under consideration seem to have no close ties with Trump and his surrounding people. Those who have remarked negatively about the US should be excluded. Lee must tap a wide pool of talent, including politicians, business people, former and current bureaucrats, overseas Koreans, scholars and so on.
