Pettis Norman, a cowboys tight end and civil rights advocate in the 1960s, dies at 86

Pettis Norman, a Dallas Cowboys tight end who was outspoken on issues of civil rights in the 1960s, has died. He was 86. The Cowboys said on the team's website Monday night that Norman died this week, calling him one of the most influential players in the club's history. Norman went to coach Tom Landry to ask that the team quit assigning players hotel rooms based on race. The Cowboys soon started assigning rooms based on names. 'I tried to do whatever I could do help change the kinds of things that society had operated under for such a long time,' Norman said. After playing in Dallas's 16-13 loss to the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl 5 in the 1970 season, Norman was traded to the San Diego Chargers for Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Lance Alworth. The Cowboys won their first Super Bowl title the next season. Hall of Fame running back Calvin Hill said Black players on the team were angry because they thought Norman was traded because of his political activism. He had participated in a protest in Dallas before the trade. Norman became one of the first Black banking executives in Dallas, the team said. He attended historically Black Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he grew up after the family moved from his native Georgia. Norman spent nine of his 12 NFL seasons with the Cowboys. He had 183 catches for 2,492 yards and 15 touchdowns in 162 games. His family said in a Facebook post that Norman died in his sleep, peacefully surrounded by family.

Mlb plans to use robot umpire challenge system in all-star game next week

Major League Baseball plans to use its robot umpire technology for ball-strike challenges in Tuesday's All-Star Game at Atlanta – another step toward possible regular-season use next season. MLB said Wednesday it intends to make the All-Star announcement Thursday. Teams won 52.2 percent of their ball/strike challenges during the spring training test, with 617 of 1,182 challenges successful in the 288 exhibition games using the Automated Ball-Strike System. ABS was installed at 13 spring training ballparks hosting 19 teams, and an animation of the pitch was shown on video boards displaying the challenge result for spectators to see. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said last month that the ABS system was likely to be considered for regular-season use by the 11-man competition committee, which includes six management representatives. 'I do think that we're going to pursue the possibility of change in that process and we'll see what comes out at the end of that,' he said. 'The teams are really positive about ABS. I do have that unscientific system that I use: my email traffic. And my distinct impression is that using ABS in spring training has made people more prone to complain of balls and strike calls via email to me, referencing the need for ABS.' During the 2024 regular season, 10.9 percent of called pitches in the strike zone were ruled balls, and 6.3 percent of called pitches outside of the strike zone were ruled strikes, according to MLB Statcast. MLB has been experimenting with the automated ball-strike system in the minor leagues since 2019.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders declines to address health issues at Big 12 media days

Deion Sanders declined to address any of his health issues when he took the podium at Big 12 football media days Wednesday after being away from Colorado. 'I'm not here to talk about my health,' said Sanders, who is going to his third season as the Buffaloes coach. 'I'm here to talk about my team.' Since overseeing Colorado's spring game April 19, Sanders hadn't attended football camps in Boulder. The school had said last month, amid reports that the coach was ill, that it could not say why he was absent from those camps. Sanders did not specifically answer any lingering questions. 'I'm looking good. I'm living lovely. God has truly blessed me,' he said. 'Not a care in the world. Not a want or desire in the world.' Sanders was the last of the league's 16 coaches to take the podium on the main stage over two days at the headquarters of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, which is about 75 miles from a massive ranch the Pro Football Hall of Fame player has in Canton, Texas. While commending the work of Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark in his opening remarks, Sanders said that Yormark called him daily to check to make sure he was getting better. There have also been a lot of calls from his fellow league coaches. 'I love them; they've been calling and checking on me, making sure I'm straight,' Sanders said. This will be Sanders' first season at Colorado without having one of his sons on the team. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders was a fifth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL draft, and safety Shilo Sanders signed with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent. Also gone is Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, the two-way standout who played for Sanders at Jackson State and Colorado and will now try to play both ways in the NFL with Jacksonville. Sanders is 13-12 in his two seasons with the Buffaloes, who, in their return to the Big 12 last season, missed making the league championship game on a tiebreaker after being one of four teams to finish 7-2 in conference play. He is under contract with the Buffaloes through the 2029 season after agreeing to a new $54 million five-year deal this spring that made him the Big 12's highest-paid coach. That replaced the final three years of the $29.5 million five-year deal he got when he arrived from Jackson State.
