Nepal set to graduate from LDC to in 2026 as per schedule, says PM Oli
Nepal is scheduled to graduate from the LDC status in November 2026.
Nepal's LDC graduation would certainly boost the country's image globally, Oli said, but also cautioned that the impact of climate change and natural disasters could hinder Nepal's progress, and thus hamper upgradation.
'Our current per capita income is around USD 1,400, which meets the threshold. Based on this and other indicators, the international community has included Nepal in the list of countries set for graduation," Oli told the Upper House.
In his replies to the concerns raised during the discussions on a study report 'Nepal's LDC Graduation 2024' by the government, the Prime Minister said Nepal's graduation will contribute to strengthening Nepal's country rating index, creating an atmosphere to attract foreign investment.
Nepal was listed as an LDC by the United Nations General Assembly in November 1971 and is now preparing to graduate to a middle-income developing country category after 55 years.
Nepal currently chairs the LDC group consisting of 45 countries.
'Indicators of economic improvements have now been noticed. The current 16th Periodic Plan was prepared with the projection of the post-graduation situation," the Prime Minister said.
Oli, however, admitted that 'upgrading Nepal as a developing country may result in reduction of some facilities in various sectors it has been receiving as a least developed country." He also cautioned that the impact of climate change and natural disasters could hinder Nepal's progress and graduation from the LDC status and underlined the need to increase production and productivity.
Nepal has been working towards upgradation since 2010 through various plans, budget and annual plans and programmes. The UN reports in 2015, 2018 and 2021 showed Nepal's progress in Human Assets Index and Economic and Environment Risk Index.
For a smooth passage to developing country status, the government has been implementing six key strategies through a high-level steering committee, Oli added. PTI SBP NPK NPK

‘It will impact states': Karnataka CM after US imposes 25 percent tariff and penalty on India
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said that the United States' decision to impose a 25 per cent tariff, along with an additional penalty on India for importing oil from Russia, would affect not just the nation but also the individual states. I'm hopeful that the central government will get its act together, get to the negotiating table, and do something practical that ensures the business thrives as usual. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday made a shocking statement on his social media platform Truth Social after the announcement of 25 per cent tariffs against India and threatened an additional "penalty" for importing Russian oil. "I don't care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India; their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world." Trump said. Trump signed a fresh executive order imposing revised tariffs for 70 countries, including India and Pakistan, in a move that is expected to strain global trade relations further. Tariffs imposed on India's neighbouring countries are less than India's 25 per cent, except for Myanmar at 40 per cent. The new tariffs for Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, and Sri Lanka are 19%, 15%, 20%, 19%, 15%, and 20%, respectively. The new tariffs, outlined in a sweeping order signed on Friday (IST), will come into effect from 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on August 7. The executive order states that the revised tariffs are aimed at addressing the national emergency declared earlier under Executive Order 14257. Trump noted that he had "recently received, among other things", new information and had determined it "necessary and appropriate" to impose additional ad valorem duties on the goods of certain trading partners. These new duties will replace those previously imposed under the same order, as amended. Other countries on which the US imposed tariffs are higher than India include Iraq (35 per cent), Laos (40 per cent), Libya (30 per cent), Serbia (35 per cent), South Africa (30 per cent), Switzerland (39 per cent), and Syria (41 per cent). Countries that imposed lower tariffs than India include the UK (10 per cent), Vietnam (20 per cent), Taiwan (20 per cent ), and South Korea (15 per cent), to name a few. The order by Trump stated, "I have determined that it is necessary and appropriate to deal with the national emergency declared in Executive Order 14257 by imposing additional ad valorem duties on goods of certain trading partners".The executive order further directs that these changes will apply to goods entering the US for consumption or withdrawn from warehouses on or after the effective date. However, goods already in transit before the deadline, loaded on vessels and en route before August 7 and entering the US before October 5, 2025, will not be subjected to the revised duties but will instead continue under the previously applicable tariff rates under the amended Executive Order 14257. The government told the Parliament on Thursday that it is examining the impact of the recent events and will take all necessary steps to safeguard the national interest. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made a statement in the lower House of Parliament a day after Trump announced the tariff. He later made a similar statement in the Rajya Sabha. Goyal said the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is holding talks with exporters, industries and all stakeholders and gathering information on their assessment of this issue.

Jury orders Tesla to pay more than $200 million in Autopilot crash case
A Miami jury decided that Elon Musk's car company Tesla was partly responsible for a deadly crash in Florida involving its Autopilot driver assist technology and must pay the victims more than USD 200 million in punitive damages. The federal jury held that Tesla bore significant responsibility because its technology failed and that not all the blame can be put on a reckless driver, even one who admitted he was distracted by his cell phone before hitting a young couple out gazing at the stars. The decision comes as Musk seeks to convince Americans his cars are safe enough to drive on their own as he plans to roll out a driverless taxi service in several cities in the coming months. The decision ends a four-year long case remarkable not just in its outcome but that it even made it to trial. Many similar cases against Tesla have been dismissed and, when that didn't happen, settled by the company to avoid the spotlight of a trial. This will open the floodgates, said Miguel Custodio, a car crash lawyer not involved in the Tesla case. It will embolden a lot of people to come to court. The case also included startling charges by lawyers for the family of the deceased, 22-year-old, Naibel Benavides Leon, and for her injured boyfriend, Dillon Angulo. They claimed Tesla either hid or lost key evidence, including data and video recorded seconds before the accident. Tesla has previously faced criticism that it is slow to cough up crucial data by relatives of other victims in Tesla crashes, accusations that the car company has denied. In this case, the plaintiffs showed Tesla had the evidence all along, despite its repeated denials, by hiring a forensic data expert who dug it up. Tesla said it made a mistake after being shown the evidence and honestly hadn't thought it was there. It's not clear how much of a hit to Tesla's reputation for safety the verdict in the Miami case will make. Tesla has vastly improved its technology since the crash on a dark, rural road in Key Largo, Florida, in 2019.
