Romantasy Fans, The 'Fourth Wing' TV Show Just Took A Big Step Forward
But yesterday, the show took a big step forward - one that should reassure fans that the show is still in with a good chance of making it to their screens before too long.
It was reported by Deadline yesterday that Moira Walley-Beckett, who was tapped as the showrunner by Amazon Prime Video (who are creating the show) over a year ago, has left the project.
Then the industry publication updated their story to say that Jac Shaeffer could be the show's new showrunner. Although no decision has been made yet, sources told them the creator has signed a deal with the studio and is in discussions to lead the romatasy series as writer, executive producer and showrunner.
For fans of the show desperate for nuggets of information on what their favourite book might look like on screen, Schaeffer is perhaps best known for her work on the Marvel fan-favourite series, Agatha All Along and WandaVision. So at the very least you know it'll be fun and stylish.
In more industry-ish news, another producing team has been added to the show - Deadline says: 'Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy's Amazon MGM Studios-based Kilter Films (Prime Video's Fallout, The Peripheral) has joined Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society, which had been on board since Amazon MGM Studios secured the rights to The Empyrean book series in 2023, along with Premediated Productions.'
What does that mean? Well, it means more hands and money at the wheel - and at the very least, some reassurance for fans that their favourite book will end up on Amazon Prime Video sooner rather than later.
Yaros' books are at the forefront of the romantasy movement which has taken over the world - the Empyrean series is planned to be five books. The first three, Fourth Wing (which spent 88 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list), Iron Flame and Onyx Storm have been released to worldwide success, with fans desperate to read the final two.
In the books, dragons and their riders meet at an elite school known as Basgiath War College. There, Violet—small, underestimated, and with a chronic condition similar to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome—eschews what she thought would be a quiet life as a scribe for a chance to spar alongside other riders and bond with not one but two dragons. She also meets the traitorous (read: hot) Xaden Riorson, a wingleader already bonded to the dragon Sgaeyl, as he helps train Violet for dragonback—and for the war threatening their homeland, Navarre.

Although Nosferatu has its moments of sheer terror, the most remarkable thing is the way it ultimately plays as a love story between the titular vampire and the young woman he seems fatefully entwined with. The Children's Hour (1961) A largely forgotten drama that stars two of the biggest movie stars (Audrey Hepburn and Shirley Maclaine) in the history of Hollywood, The Children's Hour is a remarkably progressive movie, especially considering when it was made. The film follows two female best friends who run a girls' school together. After a rumor begins to spread that the two friends are having an affair with one another, the two of them lose everything, including the school they've poured their entire lives into. The brilliance of this movie is that there's some truth to the rumor at the movie's center. Plus, the movie is remarkably open about what that might mean for its characters. Jim Shooter, Editor Who ‘Saved the Comics Industry,' Dies at 73
Jim Shooter, a hard-driving giant of a comic-book editor who took the helm at Marvel at the tender age of 27, then spent nearly a decade revolutionizing the way superhero stories are written, drawn and sold, died on Monday at his home in Nyack, N.Y. He was 73. His son, Ben Shooter, confirmed the death but did not specify a cause. Mr. Shooter was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last year. Powerfully built, with a looming 6-foot 7-inch frame, Mr. Shooter dominated the comic-book world for much of the 1980s, reinvigorating an art form that had been in decline by finding new markets and new readers. Though he was not yet 30 when he took over at Marvel in 1978, he was already an industry veteran. He sold his first comic story, to DC, Marvel's rival, when he was just 14, and he worked for both companies while still a teenager. As editor in chief at Marvel, he rationalized what had been a chaotic operation, instituting a coherent editing process and driving his staff to meet deadlines. Spider-Gwen's New Comic Already Has Fans Reeling, And It's Not Even Out Yet
Marvel's multiverse shenanigans can be hard to keep track of, especially across its many, many different media franchises. The MCU has been following a multiverse arc since Endgame premiered in 2019, and there's reason to believe Insomniac's Spider-Man games might be dabbling in the Spider-Verse in the future. However, the multi-reality concept began in the comic books, where they've been dealing with the multiverse for decades. One of the most prominent faces of these alternate dimensions is Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man's sometimes girlfriend, who in one reality tragically dies, changing the course of the hero's life forever. In a different timeline however, the two's relationship was reversed, and Gwen became Spider-Gwen (or Ghost-Spider, or Spider-Woman) after the tragic loss of Peter. But now it looks like the comics are using some cosmic fuckery to alter things in the comic's 'main' timeline, and fans are less than thrilled. All-New Spider-Gwen: The Ghost-Spider is a new comic run set to begin in August, and when fans saw the synopsis for the series back in May, it immediately raised eyebrows. All-New Spider-Gwen has its titular hero's story rewoven into the fabric of the Marvel universe. Using the Cosmic Cube, a powerful object that can reshape realities, Gwen becomes part of Earth 616, the 'Prime' reality in Marvel's various continuities (the MCU universe name began as 616, but has since become a bit more complicated as the franchise has gone on, and is now called Earth-19999). How does this work logistically? What does it mean for both Gwen and Peter to be alive in the same universe? Does this not completely change Peter Parker's trajectory in the main 'canon?' There are plenty of questions the comics will likely answer when they start rolling out next month, but right now, a lot of Spider-Gwen fans are less concerned about how Marvel is going to explain all of this, and more bothered by how this undermines Spider-Gwen's story. Spider-Gwen isn't just another hero with the same powers as Spider-Man. Her entire premise is to be a deliberate remix of his story, an exploration of the parallels between both of their worlds, and she is at the center of one of the most compelling 'what if' scenarios in comic books. Plopping her into the 'main' story runs counter to her very premise. Some fans think this is the natural end result of her rise in popularity after the Spider-Verse films, while others argue that Spider-Man lore has become so convoluted that this feels like Marvel running out of ideas. It's entirely possible this is merely an extended vacation in the main continuity before Gwen heads back to her original life, but the official synopsis says she's 'here to stay.' We'll see how Marvel handles this reality-altering storyline, and whether this will crossover with the main Spider-Man books, when the first issue is released on August 20. .
