HGTV canceled multiple shows this summer. Here's what we know.
The Warner Bros. Discovery brand has undergone a cancellation spree in recent weeks, axing a handful of beloved Home & Garden Television (HGTV) home improvement and real estate shows, including the Daytime Emmy-nominated show "Married to Real Estate."
Just last month, Warner Bros. Discovery announced it would be splitting into two publicly traded companies, Streaming & Studios and Global Networks. It's not immediately clear which company will air and continue to produce original content for HGTV.
"By operating as two distinct and optimized companies in the future, we are empowering these iconic brands with the sharper focus and strategic flexibility they need to compete most effectively in today's evolving media landscape," David Zaslav, President and CEO of Streaming & Studios, said in a statement.
HGTV has yet to address the recent cancellations publicly and representatives did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment on the matter.
Here's what we know so far about HGTV cancellations this summer.
'Christina on the Coast'
Christina Haack, host of HGTV show "Christina on the Coast," spoke out in a July 19 social media post referencing reports by People and Us Weekly that the show had been canceled.
"Summer so far. Basically just eating and laughing," Haack wrote in the caption for her photo dump."Canceled looks good on me…. Only kidding only kidding."
According to HGTV, the series followed real estate and flipping expert Christina [Haack] as she helped clients transform their outdated properties into high-end homes in Southern California. Haack's show ran for six seasons, starting in May 2019, on HGTV.
'Married to Real Estate'
After a four-season run, hosts of the Daytime Emmy-nominated show "Married to Real Estate" announced in late June that HGTV had decided not to "move forward" with the show.
"While the chain of events leading up to this is disheartening, we are deeply grateful," Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson shared in a joint statement via social media. "Grateful for four incredible seasons. Grateful for our amazing crew and supportive fans. Grateful that our businesses continue to thrive. And most of all— grateful that we are still very much married to real estate (and to each other)."
Egypt Sherrod, a real estate broker and designer, and her husband Mike Jackson helped clients in Atlanta find homes in their dream neighborhoods.
"By using their unparalleled real estate expertise, they'll make smart purchases and even smarter renovations while managing their busy family," HGTV wrote of the show.
The show made its debut on HGTV in January 2022 and aired a total of 44 episodes.
'Battle on the Beach'
Alison Victoria, host of renovation competition show "Battle on the Beach," recently revealed that the show would not be returning for a fifth season on HGTV.
Nayak, who co-hosted the show with Ty Pennington and Taniya Nayak, broke the news on her podcast "Pap Smear."
Nayak loved working on the show, telling comedian Retta that it was "so fun and funny" but that the editing did not reflect that.
"And then all of a sudden, I watch the episode... I'm like, 'well, where'd all that go?' I get it, right, it's a lot of content to try to put into 42 minutes. But where is it? Like, where's the great editing?" Victoria said. "You'll lose a show that way. I truly believe that. And 'Battle on the Beach' did not get picked back up, which is sad, cause it was like adult spring break."
Pennington and Nayak have yet to publicly address the cancellation.
According to HGTV, "Battle on the Beach" followed three teams of house flippers as they renovate identical beachfront properties for a chance to win $50,000. Ty Pennington, Alison Victoria and Taniya Nayak served as mentors, pitching in to help teams as needed.
'Farmhouse Fixer'
Jonathan Knight, co-host of "Farmhouse Fixer," announced in late June that HGTV was not going to renew the show for a fourth season.
"A lot of you have been asking about the future of Farmhouse Fixer. I am sad to say HGTV has decided not to move forward with another season," Knight wrote in a June 25 post. "While I'm still processing the reasons that led to their decision, Kristina and I are so grateful for all your support over the past 3 seasons."
The New Kids on the Block singer, who hosted the show with interior designer Kristina Crestin, went on to say that television "has been so incredibly fun for us."
"We are so proud of what we created together and look forward to sharing what's next for us."
The pair restored centuries-old farmhouses across New England together, working to "keep that history alive by breathing new life into the houses," according to HGTV. "Farmhouse Fixer" made its HGTV debut in March 2021, airing 22 episodes.
'Bargain Block'
Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas, co-hosts of "Bargain Block," confirmed in June that viewers would not be seeing them on HGTV "for much longer."
"Our entire business and lives have been put through the ringer at the hands of a giant corporation, yet we persist lol. Though you may not be seeing us for much longer on HGTV, we're excited that we've built such an amazing base of followers and we're very excited about the future," the couple said in a joint statement.
"Everyone always told us TV is a fickle world and they are very right. Tv is full of a lot of great people but it's also full of some of the worst people I've ever encountered," the statement continued.
Bynum said he and Thomas have "always tried hard to stick to what we know and what we're good at which is being ourselves."
"We love you all and we're very excited to announce what's next soon!" the couple said.
Real estate adviser Shea Hicks-Whitfield, who hosted the show alongside the couple, has not formally addressed the cancellation.
According to HGTV, the show followed the trio as they worked on their mission to revive Detroit "one block at a time." "Bargain Block," which premiered in April 2021, ran for four seasons on HGTV.
"Partners Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas want to be part of restoring the iconic American city of Detroit," HGTV says. "The scrappy visionaries buy run-down and abandoned properties and transform them into affordable, stylish starter homes for first-time homebuyers."
'Izzy Does It'
Izzy Battres, host of HGTV show "Izzy Does It," addressed cancellation rumors on June 9, when a fan asked about the show's second season.
"It's not the news we wanted to give, but here it is: there will be no Season 2," Battres replied. "Still, we're so grateful for every single person who tuned in, supported us, and made the first season unforgettable."
The show, which premiered in early February, followed the "bustling business" that is Battres Construction, Battres' family-owned renovation and design firm, over the course of eight episodes.
"After years of renovating million-dollar homes on the California coast, Izzy Battres uses expert cost-saving techniques to bring luxury renovations to homeowners with relatable budgets," HGTV wrote about the show.

'The Fantastic Four' makes us ask: Is it possible to give birth in space?
Spoiler alert! The following story contains major plot details about "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" (now in theaters). As Sue Storm, Vanessa Kirby gets to turn invisible and generate force fields to save the world from a cosmic giant. But in Marvel's "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," her most superheroic feat just might be giving birth in zero gravity. Midway through the film, a very pregnant Sue ventures into space with her husband Reed (Pedro Pascal), brother Johnny (Joseph Quinn) and friend Ben (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) to confront Galactus (voiced by Ralph Ineson) and his fierce mininon, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). As luck would have it, she goes into labor just as Galactus threatens to destroy the Earth if they don't hand over their then-unborn son, Franklin. The superheroes run back to the ship, where Sue starts to have contractions. Between contractions, she uses her powers to make the vessel invisible to hide it from the villains. While Johnny is off trying to kill the Silver Surfer, Ben stands at the foot of her makeshift delivery table in order to catch the baby, and Reed holds his wife down so she has gravity to push. Whoa, baby! The real story behind the adorable star of 'Fantastic Four' While it's nowhere near as traumatic as Kirby's birth scene in her Oscar-nominated "Pieces of a Woman," it's still an incredibly intense moment as our heroes attempt to deliver the newborn in fraught circumstances. And according to experts, the movie's depiction of zero-gravity birth isn't far from the truth. "Labor and delivery is not dependent on gravity, so births would be expected to occur without gravity," says Dr. Hugh Taylor, chair of the department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Yale School of Medicine. Nonetheless, he adds, "there are many aspects to consider. Movement cannot be well controlled, and positioning may be difficult. Movement of the baby or maneuvering the baby to aid in delivery could set the mom moving rather than the baby. The mom would need to be held in place. Strapping down the mom and any healthcare providers would be necessary. Amniotic fluid, blood and other bodily fluids would fill the room rather than drain to the floor. On the brighter side, no one would ever have to worry about dropping the baby!" Taylor is not aware of any humans or animals that have actually been born in space. But if it was to occur, he says the biggest issues would be cosmic radiation, as well as a lack of resources to care for the infant after it's born. "The developing fetus is more sensitive to radiation and there may be a greater risk of pregnancy loss or problems in development," Taylor says. "There are not likely to be medical units to care for newborns in space. Without the advanced care such as NICUs, some babies would be in jeopardy. Normal development after birth is far more dependent on gravity; this would clearly affect the growth and development of the baby. I would be more worried about the baby than the delivery." In short, what you see in "The Fantastic Four" is "feasible, and could occur," Taylor continues. "However, I would not recommend it. It would not be optimal for the baby's health."

So goes the iconic catchphrase of OG Project Runway mentor Tim Gunn, and the show is certainly taking the slogan to heart as it revs back up after a two-year hiatus with a new judge panel, host and streaming platform. Back at the helm is Heidi Klum, though Gunn won't be joining her after 16 seasons together. Also returning are designer (and winner!) The Films and Shows You Should Be Streaming in August 2025
A new era of streaming selections is here. For the past several years, our monthly column, the Nerd's Watch, has been the place to find out all the best genre titles coming to the biggest streaming services. It wasn't a complete list. We just posted the titles we think you'd care about, but it was still long, and frankly, it was hard to pick out the best of the best. Months before the new remake with Jack Black and Paul Rudd, revisit the iconic camp classic with Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez. It wasn't meant to be a camp classic, but it is now. Groundhog Day is one of those movies that just gets better and better the more you watch it. It's so expertly put together, so funny, so heartfelt. Just a true modern classic. We're onto our third Jurassic Park trilogy, but the original—Jurassic Park, The Lost World, and the underrated Jurassic Park III—are all reemerging on Netflix this month. Just in time for its 40th anniversary, the John Hughes comedy about two nerds who create a woman in a computer is popping up on two streamers. It's incredibly dated but also, thanks to John Hughes, still pretty delightful. Call them the Paul Walker years. The first seven Fast and Furious movies are all coming to Netflix (as well as Hobbs and Shaw), and you can make an argument that it was the passing of Walker, during Furious 7, that derailed the whole thing. Hopefully things get back up to speed in the future, but at least we'll always have these movies (and Hobbs and Shaw, unfortunately). The star-studded adaptation of the iconic Douglas Adams novel is nowhere near as good as the source material, but is anything? That the movie shared even a sliver of the genius and fun of the novel makes this one worth watching. Remember when Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz co-starred in one of the best superhero movies ever, alongside Nicolas Cage, and directed by Matthew Vaughn? Well, if not, now is the time to watch it again. J.J. Abrams writes and directs this Amblin-inspired tale of a group of kids who film a train crash, only to realize it's at the center of mysterious happenings around town. I've been meaning to revisit this one. One of the weirdest movies you'll see this year is this Stephen King adaptation, produced by James Wan and directed by Osgood Perkins. It's about a family tied in with a toy monkey that kills people seemingly at random. It's super violent and super funny. I'm writing this one more for myself than anyone else. Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard co-directed this camp-based slasher movie that looks like a lot of fun. I missed it in theaters but definitely will check it out on streaming. Please refer to the above video. From Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the directors of Captain Marvel, comes this 'freaky' retro anthology starring Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Dominique Thorne, and other actors who aren't in Marvel movies. You may have missed it, but earlier this year, A24 released this very unique and gorgeous film about a seemingly regular rural town that's thrown into peril because of a group of nearby creatures. Creatures that one of the young women in the town becomes friends with. Willem Dafoe is among the stars. It'll be about a year until we next see James Gunn's DC Universe on the big screen, but before then, it'll be very active on HBO Max. First up, season two of the irreverent Peacemaker starring John Cena. It ties directly into the events of Superman and pushes the whole narrative forward. Have you ever wanted to know more about Wakanda in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well, this new animated series is just the ticket. I feel like I'm in Edge of Tomorrow with how I always repeat myself, but here it goes again. Every time Edge of Tomorrow, the Tom Cruise-Emily Blunt time loop sci-fi action film, appears on a streamer, I will let you know. If you stream it, we will watch. It's not quite Edge of Tomorrow, but if you want another super solid Tom Cruise sci-fi film, this one from Joseph Kosinski, the director of Tron: Legacy, Top Gun: Maverick, and F1, well, here you go. After a season with equal parts character and carnage, the video game adaptation starring Anthony Mackie is back. And, this season, it's all about the car battle royale that made the series so popular. One of the more underrated films of 2024 was this incredibly visceral action film starring and directed by Dev Patel. Highly recommended. Spike Jonze directs, Charlie Kaufman writes, and Nicolas Cage stars alongside Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper, and others. Not many movies could live up to that incredible roster, but this one does. There have been seven Paranormal Activity movies, and the first six (1, 2, 3, 4, Ghost Dimension, and Marked Ones) are all coming to Paramount+. Some are better than others, but it's a really strong, scary, found-footage franchise. Jim Carrey stars as a man who lives a pretty great life until he figures out he's the star of the world's largest reality TV series. A modern classic that gets better and better with age. One of those 1990s slashers that came out in the wake of Scream and has its fans, as well as its haters. We're in the first camp, what about you? Weeks after becoming probably the first indie horror movie to get its own corn maze at San Diego Comic-Con, the horror movie with the perfect, direct title is coming to streaming. Want more io9 news?
