Bengaluru court restrains Kamal Haasan from statements against Kannada
On Friday, an Additional City Civil and Sessions Judge in the city passed the order after hearing a suit filed by Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) through its president, Mahesh Joshi. According to PTI, the suit sought an injunction against Kamal Haasan from making any defamatory statements against the Kannada language and culture.
After hearing the complainant's plea, the court passed an injunction restraining Kamal Haasan from 'posting, making, writing, publishing any statement or remarks claiming linguistic superiority over Kannada language or making any statements against the Kannada language, literature, land and culture'.
The court also issued a summons to Kamal Hassan and posted the case to August 30 for further hearing. The actor will now have to appear before the court on the next date.

The controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan in Karnataka stems from a statement he made during the promotions of his latest film, Thug Life. At the music launch of the film in Bengaluru in May, Kamal Haasan said that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil'. The statement sparked widespread outrage among pro-Kannada groups and cultural organisations. After Kamal Haasan stood by his statement and refused to apologise, Thug Life was not released in Karnataka.
The film's makers, including Kamal Haasan, went to court and secured a victory, but quite belatedly. Eventually, the film was never released in Karnataka, and did not perform very well at the box office elsewhere.
Thug Life marked Kamal Haasan's reunion with Mani Ratnam after 37 years. However, the film failed to get much love from fans or the critics. Thug Life, which also stars Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ali Fazal, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy and Tanikella Bharani, grossed just ₹93 crore worldwide. It is now streaming on Netflix.

From Madurai to New York: Meet Semma's chef Vijay Kumar, whose authentic Tamil cuisine is turning heads worldwide
It's not every day that a South Indian restaurant tops The New York Times annual list of New York City's 100 best restaurants, beating the likes of Atomix and Le Bernardin. But Semma, a cozy Tamil restaurant in NYC's Greenwich Village, has done that. The brainchild of Madurai-born chef Vijay Kumar, Semma – a Tamil slang term meaning 'fantastic' – clinched the No. 1 spot in 2025, just four years after its debut in 2021. Semma was on No. 7 on the same list last year. In a world where Indian cuisine is finally receiving its long-overdue global recognition, Semma's rise feels personal and symbolic. 'It's an incredible honour, especially for a restaurant honouring food from the villages of South India,' said Vijay, 44, in an exclusive interview with 'But it's also validation that our cuisine, in its truest form, belongs on the world stage.' Growing up on a farm near Madurai, Vijay learned to cook by watching and helping his mother and grandmother in the kitchen. After culinary school and stints at Indian hotels and cruise ships, he moved to the United States, where he led kitchens at Dosa and Rasa in California. In 2021, he relocated to New York to open Semma. His mission was clear: to serve regional, heritage dishes rarely seen on restaurant menus. Some of these are eral thokku, nathai pirattal, and thinai khichdi. 'The nathai pirattal is something you won't find anywhere else. It's a true village dish, one I grew up eating,' he said. Cricketer Suresh Raina To Make His Acting Debut. Details Inside
Chennai: Former India cricketer and Chennai Super Kings's dearly loved Chinna Thala Suresh Raina is to make his debut as an actor in a Tamil film that is to be directed by director Logan. The film, which will be based on cricket, is to be produced by producer Saravana Kumar, whose production house called Dream Knight Stories (DKS) was officially launched on Friday evening in Chennai. Cricketer Shivam Dube, who plays the role of a pinch hitter for the Chennai Super Kings, officially unveiled the name of the production house and its logo. Suresh Raina, who is in Amsterdam with his family on a holiday, joined the event through a video call. Raina said he wanted to be at the event but said that he could not make it as he had been informed a little late. When Raina was asked what had made him to pick Tamil and the production house DKS for making his debut as an actor, he replied, "I think DKS has a good director and first of all when the director told me the story, it was very close to us. Then being a cricket movie, it has to start from Tamil Nadu because we have been playing a lot of matches for CSK over the years and they have a lot of love, liking and a lot of affection." On a lighter note, when it was pointed out to Raina that Shivam Dube had been asked what sort of an actor he would be, if he had become an actor, the pinch hitter for Chennai Super Kings had said he would have been a romantic hero. When Raina was asked the same question, he said, "I think I will be a very good singer. Having a guitar in my hand. Making a nice dosa for my team mates. Enjoy having rasam rice. I will be chilled out. No stress." Raina went on to add with a laugh, "He (Shivam Dube) can be a romantic actor, I can be a romantic singer. So, we can gel along."
