Patriots legend has five-word reaction to blockbuster Dolphins trade

USA Today4 days ago
Not everyone was a fan of the Miami Dolphins' blockbuster trade that sent tight end Jonnu Smith and cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick.
New England Patriots legend James White was one of many people who believed the Dolphins made a mistake. Some have criticized their decision to move on from Ramsey considering their lack of talent at the cornerback position.
However, White took things in an entirely different direction. He believes it was a mistake for the team to trade Smith in the deal.
"They should have kept Jonnu!!," White posted on social media.
White was reacting to a comment made by former Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert, who claimed Dolphins Pro Bowlers "get treaded like [expletive]".
Smith experienced a career resurgence last season with the Dolphins, following previous stops with the Patriots and Atlanta Falcons. He finished the year with 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. In one season, he went from a forgotten talent to a Pro Bowl tight end and one of the Dolphins' best receiving targets.
Instead of ponying up the cash for a major extension, the Dolphins shipped Smith off in a trade to the Steelers and replaced him with previously retired tight end Darren Waller. It's a decision that could come back to haunt them during the 2025 season.

Bucs Rival Alvin Kamara Reveals Weakness in Hilarious Viral Video

Bucs Rival Alvin Kamara Reveals Weakness in Hilarious Viral Video originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Alvin Kamara is a do-it-all talent for the New Orleans Saints ... and you don't have to tell that twice to his rivals with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Advertisement In his career, the five-time Pro Bowler and 2017 Offensive Rookie of the Year has played against the Bucs 14 times ... and he has 11 TDs. But based on his Fourth of July Weekend appearance at Wrigley Field in Chicago, where ahead of the second game of a three-game series pitting the Chicago Cubs against St. Louis Cardinals, we don't think the Bucs should be too scared of the idea of Kamara ever completing a gimmicky halfback pass. Why do we say that? Check out Alvin's pitch ... a hilariously embarrassing bit of work for a pro athlete - let alone one this gifted. It was so poor that the competitor Kamara remained on the mound and gave it a second try. Advertisement Pitch No. 2 wasn't very impressive, either ... but at least it got there so they could start the game. First-year Saints head coach Kellen Moore should be made aware: Alvin does actually have one pass attempt in his illustrious eight-year career. (It was a 2019 completion for 13 yards.) But ask him to do this with a football and we fear disaster might strike. "The first one, I just let that (expletive) loose," Kamara later said with a smile. Last year, the electric Kamara 14 games for the Saints, ending the campaign with 228 rush attempts for 950 yards (4.2 yards per attempt) and six touchdowns. He added 68 receptions for 543 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Advertisement Kamara's got big numbers - and the lowly Saints will need 'em again in 2025 - as he's the NFL's only active player with at least 6,500 rushing yards and 4,500 receiving yards. ... and he's on the exclusive list as one of the 10 players in NFL history to reach those numbers. So he can run. And he can catch. And he can score. But he can't ... you know ... throw. Cowboys pushed biggest offensive investment, $3.75 million, to side 1 month after signing

The Dallas Cowboys' offensive line eroded. With Zack Martin's retirement, the end of the era was official. It stretched over six years, but the second iteration of the Great Wall of Dallas saw it's final days in 2024. To wit, the front office was already planning for the transition, using first-round picks on Tyler Smith and Tyler Guyton two years apart, and also grabbing Cooper Beebe in the third round of 2024. To somewhat stop the bleeding from the loss of Martin, the club signed Robert Jones, a full-time starter formerly of the Miami Dolphins. Jones hasn't played at the level of Martin's reputation at any point of his career, but Martin was nowhere near that standard in recent years either. Martin posted pedestrian Pro Football Focus grades in 2024, with a 65.2 overall and a 62.0 pass protection mark. Jones wasn't that, with an overall grade of 56.1, but it's not as big of a drop off as it would've been going from the Martin of 2022 and before. Jones comes to Dallas as a serviceable starter with some upside. RunDown Position: Offensive Guard Age: 26 Height: 6-foot-4 Weight: 321 pounds Hometown: Rockford, IL High School: Rockford East College: Middle Tennessee State (Film Study Video) Draft: 2021 Undrafted Free Agent Acquired: 2025 Free Agency Contract: One-year deal (2025), $3.75 million 2025 Base Salary: $1.5 million, $3 million guaranteed Career Earnings: $6.9 million (per Over The Cap) Profile Jones has 30 starts under his belt acros his four NFL seasons, including all 17 from his final year with the Dolphins. On the outside, it initially appeared Jones would be in competition with ERFA re-signing Brock Hoffman, giving him more money than any other free-agent on offense, $3.75 million, but that was before Dallas spent the No. 12 overall selection on Tyler Booker from Alabama. Now, Jones is in competition to be a game-day active backup, with outside training camp competition from fellow free agent signings Saahdiq Charles and Hakeem Adeniji, neither of whom played in 2024. Jones' age indicates his best days are ahead of him, as do his small-school background and the general notion that it takes a while for a mid-tier UDFA to acclimate himself to the league before he can reach his full potential. PFSN ranks all 32 NFL offenses (including the Texans)

Pro Football Network recently released its preseason NFL power rankings for offenses going into the 2025 NFL season. To no surprise, the Detroit Lions landed at the No. 1 spot, while the Cleveland Browns, with qestions at quarterback, take last place. Where do the Houston Texans fall after trading away five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil and moving on from Bobby Slowik in favor of Nick Caley? Well, for now, it's near the bottom since the offensive line and questions at receiver, minus Nico Collins. Appearing at No. 27, PFSN's Kyle Soppe loves that C.J. Stroud will be getting a fresh start with the playbook, but there are too many questions surrounding the offensive line's status entering the year to warrant a higher selection. "In 2023, the Houston Texans were the hot offense to buy stock in," Soppe wrote. "Rookie C.J. Stroud led them to the 15th-best unit by our math, and the outlook for 2024 was nothing but rosy with Tank Dell projecting to take the next step and Stefon Diggs coming to town. "Houston graded out better than Arizona that season, yet they were 22 spots worse than the Cardinals just 12 months later. It would appear that a franchise QB is beneath the surface, and a healthy Nico Collins would go a long way toward him returning to that 'future of the position' conversation. "Christian Kirk was brought in from Jacksonville, and Jaylin Noel was taken No. 79 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. If you're going to buy low on Houston's offense, now is the time." A near-the-back-of-the-pack ranking seems fair going into the summer. Nothing has happened on the field to warrant a massive upside turnaround this offseason, but things could change by the end of training camp. Houston will look to improve on that ranking this fall, starting with a Week 1 showdown with the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium on Sept. 7. The Texans return for training camp in two weeks, starting on July 23.
