KUCHING (June 26): This year's Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), which just concluded, recorded 22,148 attendees, fewer than last year's 26,000, said Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
However, he said the shift in audience demographics reflects a growing trend of family-based tourism and higher-spending visitors to Sarawak, noting that the festival remained a success despite the marginal drop in attendance.
'It might be fewer than last year, but what we're seeing is more families attending together, which is a good sign of bonding and inclusivity,' he told reporters after the Petronas Youth Football Closed Tournament press conference here today.
Abdul Karim added that 2026 and 2027 would be milestone years for RWMF, which will mark its 30th anniversary in 2027.
'We've already started planning with the CEO of the Sarawak Tourism Board to make the next two editions even bigger in conjunction with the 30th celebration,' he said.
He also acknowledged rising competition in the regional music scene, especially following the post-pandemic surge in concerts across Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta and Manila.
'Now, almost every month, you have big names performing in the region.
'Ticket prices are high, so people may choose to attend concerts elsewhere rather than travel to Kuching again,' he noted.
To address this, Abdul Karim said the state government continues to support event organisers through seed funding to help lower ticket prices and make local events more accessible.
'That's why you go to RWMF, you just need to pay RM200 plus.
'Whereas if you go to a concert in Singapore, it would cost you probably RM1,000,' he said.
On Sarawak's overall tourism performance, he said that while visitor arrivals from January to May this year were slightly lower compared to the same period in 2024, tourism receipts had increased significantly.
'If we look at January to May and also look at the number of visitors in Sarawak this year and last year, last year was slightly more.
'But tourism receipts, we have much more,' he said.
He attributed the stronger earnings to an increase in foreign tourist arrivals, who tend to spend more during their stays.
'From January to May, we recorded over RM1 billion in tourism receipts every month, which reflects the increased spending power of international visitors,' he said.
Abdul Karim emphasised that the value of tourism lies not just in the number of visitors, but also in the quality of experiences and the broader economic impact.
'That's why we have got sport events, we have got musical events, we have food and culture events, we have got 'What About Kuching' (WAK), which will cater for the youth.
'So when everyone is being looked after, there is something for everyone,' he said. Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah Rainforest World Music Festival rwmf

From hillside shrine to iconic landmark: Miri temple's journey of faith, unity
(From right) Hock Seng, Ting, Georgina, Lee, Khien Ku, Yii and Chaw pose for a photo-call, taken during a symbolic handover of a Unifor cheque for RM300,000 to Some Shak Lung Kung Temple. MIRI (June 28): The transformation of Some Shak Lung Kung Temple from a small hillside shrine into a prominent religious and tourism landmark stands as a powerful symbol of perseverance and unity within the local Chinese community, said Sarawak Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin. He made the remarks during a grand banquet celebrating the recognition of the temple's Tow Boo Kong Nine Emperor Gods as the 27th Seal-Holding Sacred Palace of Malaysia Tow Boo Kong Temple on Friday. 'What began as a humble temple by the hillside has now become a majestic landmark admired by all,' said the Senadin assemblyman, highlighting the temple's decades-long journey to secure land and establish its current structure. He emphasised that the temple, now a magnet for devotees and tourists alike, is not only a place of worship but also a representation of Miri's cultural and tourism potential. 'This transformation would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the community, the leadership of Sea Dragon Master Ng Khien Ku, and the strong backing of the Sarawak government,' he added. The state minister, who had been closely involved with the temple for over 30 years, recounted the early struggles, from land donations being withdrawn after ground-breaking ceremonies to losing sites due to government development plans. 'Despite these setbacks, the temple committee persevered and eventually secured a permanent site at Jalan Jee Foh 9, overcoming stiff competition from other associations,' he said. 'Today, the temple stands as a striking symbol of Miri's cultural landscape, featuring a grand hall that accommodates over 1,000 guests and a twin-dragon gate that has become a local icon.' Lee also revealed that over RM20 million had been invested into the temple's development, part of which was funded by the Sarawak government. 'The story of Some Shak Lung Kung Temple is more than just a religious journey – it embodies the resilience of our people and our collective dedication to preserving cultural heritage,' he added. The event, attended by over 1,000 guests from across Malaysia and also from Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, and Brunei, also brought together representatives of more than 60 affiliated temples. A highlight of the banquet was the presentation of a RM300,000 grant by the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor), proposed by the Pujut constituency. The grant would be used to complete the infrastructure of the temple's new meeting hall, which could accommodate over 1,000 guests at any given time. Also present yesterday were Deputy State Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting; Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii; Unifor director Dato Georgina Apphia Ngau; Immigration and Labour Unit Sarawak director Richard Lon; temple chairman Ng Hock Seng; and Chaw Zhe Jian, who representing Miri MP Chiew Choon Man. Sun bear centre draws 79,362 visitors
Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 Text Size: Liew, accompanied by Dr Wong, viewing the sun bears from an observation platform. SANDAKAN: The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment has nurtured the growth and development of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) since its inception in 2008. Its Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew said BSBCC, the only one of its kind in the world for protection of this endangered species, is a partnership project with the Sabah Wildlife Department (JHL), an agency under the Ministry, and Sabah Forestry Department. Sun bears are a Class 1 Protected Species under the state's Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997. 'Last year, we allocated RM228,420 for the construction of Phase 1 of the Entrance Foyer, which has since been completed. This year saw an additional allocation of RM250,000 for construction of Phase 2 of the Entrance Foyer. Work is expected to start this year,' Liew told reporters after a recent visit to the centre here. The Minister noted that this 17-year-old tourist attraction, which is home to 42 rescued sun bears, draws local and international visitors like a magnet. 'I was informed by its Founder and CEO Dr (Hon) Wong Siew Te that the Centre received 79,362 visitors in 2024, with an average of 6613 visitors per month. That year, there were international visitors from 115 countries with the United Kingdom, Australia and Italy being the top three international nationalities that visited the Centre. 'The peak season is from July to October generating the most number of visitors. In fact, we have more Malaysian visitors during the school holidays,' she said. Educationists, researchers, school children and teachers, wildlife conservationists, animal lovers, and the like make up the composition of visitors and tourists, the majority being nature lovers and nature-based tourists. Many may not be aware that the BSBCC is also the main implementing agency for the 10-Year State Sun Bear Action Plan, Liew said. The main attraction to visitors at BSBCC is watching the sun bears' natural behaviour in their natural habitat, the rainforest. 'Sometimes visitors can see the bears climbing and sleeping high on the trees. Random feedings enable the visitors to see them eating as well,' said Dr Wong. According to him, all the sun bears at the BSBCC have been rescued from illegal pet keeping after their mothers were brutally killed by poachers. Over the past 17 years, the Sabah Wildlife Department (JHL) has rescued 70 sun bear orphans and sent them to the conservation centre, he disclosed. Liew commended Dr Wong for his unwavering commitment, patience and perseverance in keeping the BSBCC afloat, despite the multiple challenges that came his way. In a guided tour, he drew the Minister's attention to sun bears kept in Pen B, C, and D, where visitors can view and learn about them. 'We regard them as ambassadors for their species to raise awareness among the general public, apart from being subjects of our research projects,' said the wildlife conservationist. Sharing his multitasking role as the founder and owner of BSBCC, Dr Wong said: 'Since founding the Centre 17 years ago, I have been running the place at all levels, from designing the facility, taking care of the bears, and conducting education and research programs to development of the Centre and fund-raising efforts. Everything that you can think of, even gardening and cleaning the toilets. 'We try our best to take good care of the bears and rehabilitate them. Thirteen rescued sun bears were successfully rehabilitated and released back into the wild. In addition, the latest two rescued sun bear cubs have been sent to Tabin Wildlife Reserve to undergo the 'soft-release' program.' Acknowledging the Ministry's contribution, Dr Wong said KePKAS has helped BSBCC a lot for the past 17 years. 'The Ministry even helped us to raise funds for the Centre to get off the ground in 2008, and gave us a grant for our operational cost in 2013. I hope the Ministry will continue to support our work in the future.' He said the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), an agency under KePKAS, has assisted him in many ways to promote the Centre to the local tourism market and internationally, too. 'On our part, our promotional efforts are through social media platforms (FB, Tiktok, X, YouTube) and websites.' In retrospect, Dr Wong said in the infant years (from 2008 to 2013), BSBCC survived on public donations and grants from various funders across the world, adding 'Since opening to the public on January 16, 2014, we have been depending heavily on ticketing fees and souvenir purchase revenue to run the centre. ' Admittedly, his greatest challenge in operating the Centre is the need to seek sufficient funds, not only to maintain the facility but also to expand it wherever necessary. 'Yes, finding competent staff to help me manage the Centre is also a big challenge.' On his future plans, the farsighted Founder and CEO envisions a third observation platform, an interpretation centre and new office building, and a captive breeding enclosure. 'For BSBCC, these construction plans need financing. I have an undying passion and boundless energy to work for another 30 years. By that time, I am sure I have a lot of successors who can take over my life mission,' Dr Wong quipped. He added that he still needs to raise RM1,000,000 to build the Field Office and staff house for the Tabin Sun Bear Project. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Misled on Haj package' claim
Published on: Saturday, June 28, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 28, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: According to Sapariah, the losses included return MAS flight tickets between Tawau and Kuala Lumpur, excess baggage charges for domestic flights in Saudi Arabia, and expenses for frozen food and other necessities—with some items supported by receipts and some without. TAWAU: The Consumer Claims Tribunal has fixed July 24 for the hearing of a case in which a female teacher is claiming RM10,000 in compensation from a company that offered a Hajj package. Tribunal President Larina Wong Shiao Yee said the claimant, Sapariah Muhammad, filed the claim against Tripz HR Sdn Bhd on May 14, 2025. In her claim, the teacher alleged that the company had misled her with the Hajj package it offered. She had paid for a Hajj worker visa and a Haji Tasreh visa package but was only issued a tourist visa. Despite paying for the worker visa package, Sapariah claimed she received only a tourist visa before departing from Tawau. She also alleged that the company misused the tourist visa for the purpose of performing Hajj. Furthermore, the claimant said she felt manipulated and deceived after being instructed to lie about her true purpose of travel to Saudi Arabia, both at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and upon arrival in Riyadh. She incurred losses amounting to RM10,000, as not all payments were refunded after she cancelled her trip while at KLIA. According to Sapariah, the losses included return MAS flight tickets between Tawau and Kuala Lumpur, excess baggage charges for domestic flights in Saudi Arabia, and expenses for frozen food and other necessities—with some items supported by receipts and some without. The teacher had initially paid a total of RM37,305 for the Hajj package, which included payments to the company's account, the agent's account, and other related expenses. However, she only received a partial refund of RM27,305. She was originally scheduled to perform the Hajj and Ziarah pilgrimage from May 17 to June 28, 2024. Meanwhile, the company's legal adviser, Hanif Osman, requested a new mention date to allow time to review the documents and claim details submitted. Larina then fixed July 24 as the next hearing date and instructed both the claimant and respondent to attend with any relevant witnesses or supporting documents. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
