Eddie Vedder's quest to help cure a rare disease subject of new documentary

CNN18-04-2025
'Matter of Time,' a documentary featuring Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder that is set to debut this summer at the Tribeca Film Festival, is being billed as much more than a concert film – it's a rallying cry for action.
A string of 2023 solo concerts in Seattle are the backdrop for the film, which chronicles Vedder's efforts to raise funds for clinical research for Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare genetic skin disease that causes blisters and skin erosion and predominantly affects children.
Proceeds from those concerts were directed to EB Research Partnership (EBRP), a foundation co-founded by Vedder and his wife Jill, along with a group of families. The organization's goal is to find a cure for EB by 2030.
The film, according to a news release, 'blends powerful music with the poignant, real-life stories of patients, families, researchers, and thought leaders, revealing how determination and innovation are paving the way toward a cure.'
'We are so grateful to the music community, and the entire team who made these concerts and this film possible,' said Eddie Vedder in a statement, first provided to CNN. 'This is a story of hope, resilience, and the power of community.'
Jill Vedder, chairwoman of EBRP, added: 'It's amazing to witness how far we've come. Epidermolysis Bullosa may be rare, but through the tireless work of our community, our message is reaching more people than ever. This is more than awareness; it's an urgent push to cure EB by 2030, and together, I know we can make it happen.'
The couple's involvement stems from a personal connection. A family friend's son was born with EB and it inspired them to take action.
'The concert wasn't just about music; it was about amplifying the voices of a small but mighty community that refuses to let this disease define them,' said Matt Finlin, the film's director. 'Through the Vedders' dedication and the efforts of everyone involved, this documentary demonstrates to the world how, even against all odds, real change is within reach.'
Founded in 2010, EBRP has had a noted impact on research into EB using a so-called venture philanthropy model that essentially aims to create a recurring donation stream by applying some of the principles of investing. Using this model, the foundation has funded 160 research projects and helped accelerate the growth clinical trials, with over 50 now in progress, up from two when the organization started, according to the group's website.
Michael Hund, CEO of EB Research Partnership, said 'Matter of Time' 'highlights the real scientific progress that is happening right now.'
'We are showing the world how rare diseases like EB can be cured, and we hope to take our model to thousands of other rare diseases,' Hund siad.
The documentary is produced by Door Knocker Media in association with Vitalogy Foundation. Karen Barzilay is also a producer.
It is set to premiere at the 24th Tribeca Festival on Thursday, June 12, per a lineup announced on Wednesday.

Drummer Matt Cameron hasn't retired despite leaving Pearl Jam

Former Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron has confirmed that he has not retired from music, despite leaving the grunge pioneers after almost three decades. The 62-year-old announced last week that he was leaving Pearl Jam after 27 years. Rolling Stone reported that the drummer followed that announcement with a new post on his Instagram Stories, thanking fans for reaching out. 'Thank you for the kind words of support,' wrote Cameron, 'and for the record, I'm still an active musician.' He has not yet announced exactly which musical projects he'll be pursuing next. Matt Cameron drumming with Pearl Jam (2024 Invision) Cameron originally made his name with Soundgarden before the Chris Cornell-led band split in 1997. He joined Pearl Jam the following year. He also played with Cornell in the supergroup Temple of the Dog. In his initial statement posted to the band's official social media accounts, Cameron wrote: 'After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam. 'Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter. 'I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It's been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Peace and Love, Matt Cameron.' In an additional statement at the time, the band added: 'From being one of our first musical heroes in the bands Skinyard and the mighty Soundgarden, to playing on our first demos in 1990, Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer. 'He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt.' Cameron's final album with the band was 2024's Dark Matter. In a four-star review, The Independent's Louis Chilton wrote: 'When you've been in the game for three decades, staying relevant is a tall order. Seattle-based grunge rockers Pearl Jam know this all too well. Since their breakthrough record, Ten, 33 years and 11 albums have passed by, now including their latest LP. Wisely, Dark Matter sees the band abandon the pursuit of relevance in search of something timeless. 'Across 11 songs, Pearl Jam – vocalist Eddie Vedder, drummer Matt Cameron, bassist Jeff Ament, lead guitarist Mike McCready, and rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard – traverse a variety of alt-rock sounds, from the sharp, scratchy guitars that tear through album opener 'Scared of Fear' to the hopeful pop-rock sensibility of 'Something Special'. 'Written about Vedder's children, the latter is elevated by some ambitious and unexpected chord progressions... Musically, Dark Matter is some of their catchiest and punchiest material in years. It'll have you nodding your head – but it'll never let you get comfortable.'

Matt Cameron Denies He's Retired Following Exit From Pearl Jam

Matt Cameron might no longer be sitting behind the kit for Pearl Jam, but the decorated drummer has refuted the notion that he's officially retired. Cameron announced last week (July 7) that after more than a quarter century spent keeping the beat for the Seattle grunge icons, he had left the group. 'After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,' he announced in a statement. 'I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It's been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.' However, while Cameron hasn't publicly detailed the reasons leading to his decision, he has however taken to social media to reveal he's far from done with the music game. As Rolling Stone reports, Cameron took to his Instagram account to share a since-expired Story that gave an update as to his current status. 'Thank you for the kind words of support,' he wrote, 'and for the record, I'm still an active musician.' Cameron joined Pearl Jam in 1998, serving as the drummer for every one of their albums from 2000's Binaural until 2024's Dark Matter. His joining the band occurred just one year after the initial dissolution of Soundgarden, with whom he had sat behind the kit since 1986. Having been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017 as a member of Pearl Jam, Cameron will become the latest two-time inductee upon Soundgarden's inclusion in November 2025. Though Soundgarden officially split for good following the passing of frontman Chris Cornell in 2017, Cameron has performed with his bandmates at various reunion performances since, including a December benefit gig under the moniker Nudedragons with vocalist Shaina Shepherd in December. Members of Soundgarden had also previously been announced as performers for the recent Back To The Beginning farewell concert for Ozzy Osbourne at Villa Park in Birmingham, England on July 5, though ultimately did not attend. 'We are very grateful to Tony, Ozzy, Geezer and Bill, as well as Sharon Osbourne and music director, Tom Morello for the honor and invitation to Soundgarden to perform at the Back to the Beginning festival!' a post on Soundgarden's official Instagram account read this week. 'We are super bummed and regret that we were unable to coordinate the schedules of our individual and collective projects to attend and contribute to the festival.' Zach Bryan's Ex Brianna LaPaglia Fires Back Against Song Remarks, Leaked Text Message

The online post-breakup drama between singer-songwriter Zach Bryan and his ex-girlfriend, podcaster Brianna LaPaglia continues nearly a year after the former couple's breakup in late 2024. A new set of back-and-forth of barbs thrown between Bryan and LaPaglia began shortly after Bryan released a trio of new songs earlier this month, including 'River Washed Hair.' The Grammy winner denied online speculation the new song was about LaPaglia, commenting, 'Lmfao, I said 'sweet' this is not about whatever she has going on hahahahaah.' More from Billboard Matt Cameron Denies He's Retired Following Exit From Pearl Jam Kesha Makes Chart-Topping Debut With New Album '. (Period)' Rauw Alejandro Gains Big: 'Carita Linda' Takes No. 1 Spot on Latin Airplay Chart LaPaglia swiftly responded on social media, writing, 'Lmao obviously he doesn't think I'm sweet I turned down 12 million dollars to share my abuse,' going on to claim of Bryan's previous romantic partners, 'while rose [Madden] and Deb [Peifer] signed nda's. Also fyi his songs aren't about anyone he writes them drunk at 6am.' On his Instagram Stories, Bryan shared a screenshot of a text message allegedly sent from LaPaglia, sometime prior to Oct. 29, 2024. The lengthy message includes lines such as 'I'll never forget the love I felt for you at one time in this life! Timing was wrong and you weren't ready and that's okay. Enjoy being a rockstar. If you ever need a friend that gets it, I'll always be here, I don't break my promises.' On July 14, LaPaglia shared on Instagram a screenshot of a different text message, one which LaPaglia claimed was from Bryan's management team, offering non-disclosure agreement option proposals, with one option including a house in addition to $3 million, and another option being a flat $10 million. 'And I rest my case! His manager texting me their options for NDA [non-disclosure agreement],' LaPaglia captioned the Instagram story containing the screenshot of the text message. In another Instagram Story on July 14, LaPaglia wrote, 'I have not told one lie ever and it's baffling to me the brain dead little army of men that so clearly abuse women too that blindly follow their little leader bc he makes songs for them about being bad boyz lol.' She also seemed to confirm that Bryan's previously screenshotted text message was indeed from her, writing, 'For those of you confused, my ex posted screenshots of our texts (where I'm being nice lol) this morning at 7 am. He also commented on TikTok's about me last week. I am simply responding to him attacking me. I want nothing to do with this man idk why he's crashing out.' She also wrote, 'One last thing, I am not taking the bait and please stop dming me to expose him. The proof is literally in the pudding I don't need to relive my trauma for the sake of online entertainment. Like I've said from day one. I share my experiences that I thought would be helpful for other women and I'll continue to honor that.' She later added, 'I was offered 12.9 million dollars to stay quiet. I was presented options on what I could choose. I chose none because I have morals. End of story. I'm so sick of this s–t idk why he's crashing out. After their breakup last year, Bryan posted on his Instagram Stories, 'Brianna and me have broken up with each other and I respect and love her with every ounce of my heart. She has loved me unconditionally for a very long time and for that I'll always thank her. I have had an incredibly hard year personally and struggled through some pretty severe things. I thought it would be beneficial for both of us to go our different ways. I am not perfect and I never will be.' Billboard has reached out to Bryan's team for comment. Next up, Bryan will perform three headlining shows at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 18-20.
