'David Beckham deserves a knighthood but ordinary people should be honoured too'

Daily Mirror14-06-2025
David Beckham was finally awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours list this week - and we asked Mirror readers to share their thoughts on his long-awaited honour. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
David Beckham finally received a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours list - and we asked Mirror readers whether the Manchester United icon deserves the accolade. The former England star has been considered for the honour for over a decade, having made notable donations to charity and receiving an OBE from the late Queen Elizabeth in 2003 for his services to football.
Beckham, who played 115 times for England, will soon take the title of Sir and join a long list of football legends who have also been recognised by the Royal Family. His wife Victoria will also be known as Lady Beckham.

The King's Birthday Honours List was announced on Friday night with over a thousand recipients awarded for their exceptional achievements, with a particular focus on those who have given their time to public service.

This year's recipients include dedicated community champions, role models in sport, pioneers in the arts, passionate health workers, and supporters of young people.
Other celebs to be honoured included Strictly Come Dancing's Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, Oscar winner Gary Oldman and The Who's Roger Daltrey.
Earlier this week we asked Mirror readers if they thought Becks deserves to be knighted, and 60 percent said 'No'. Around 12,452 people took part in our poll, and a staggering 7,472 selected the option 'No - I don't think so.'
Taking to the comments section of three Mirror articles, readers have had their say on the topic. One user penned: "There are lots of other ordinary people who do not have famous personas, influence and money to start up a charity or input to other charities that for me deserve knighthoods or damehoods than these pair.
"Unfortunately, we live in a celebrity world and the ordinary man, woman and child who do so much for charities, hardly get noticed let alone a thought for a knighthood or damehood. I recognise and think much more of those who deserve the recognition or a recognition than a very wealthy footballer and his wife."

Another echoed: "Where are the knighthoods for the people who fought to save lives during Covid ? Or the war heroes who lost limbs in Afghanistan and Falklands ? Or the doctors and surgeons who save lives daily in the theatres, the Samaritans and ambulance staff who save lives or work helping people to overcome tragedies, the social workers who have to daily cry at the abuse and horrific parenting they have to report about, the teachers who saved their pupils from gunmen? Where are their knighthoods and all the rest? Beckham doesn't deserve a slice of cake let alone a knighthood. What a sham."
"It should go to ordinary everyday people, who work tirelessly raising money for charities and don't get any recognition for it. He's been paid handsomely for kicking a football around for 90minutes," expressed a third.
A fourth posted: "When do people that really do deserve recognition...get the recognition. There are many more well deserved that do great work," while another voiced: "What a waste of a knighthood. Plenty of others should come way before him."

Meanwhile, a hefty 4,980 said the football star does deserve the honour, as one person defended: "Well deserved, does lots for charity and I am sure will use his knighthood for the good of all the charities he is associated with. He was just a normal young lad and he made it in the footballing world, his talent was there for all to see and as for Posh she was just another teenage who made it in the music world and then went on to the fashion world, two ordinary people who have made it big, good on them."

A second added: "I think he has done more good than bad. He's certainly more deserving than those senior public 'servants' and judges who do more bad than good but receive titles automatically," while a third agreed: "He has done a lot more for this country than most of them who get these knighthoods."

"I am in the camp that thinks Beckham should be knighted. He was special, he has done lots for charity and has been an ambassador for his country. Yes I think he should become a Sir," concluded another.
Becks was first put forward for a knighthood in 2011 following his role in securing the London 2012 Olympics - but was blocked by the Honours Committee after he became embroiled in a tax avoidance scheme, which he was cleared of four years ago.
In 2017, shocking emails from Beckham were leaked, revealing his fury at the New Years honours committee and possibly setting him back in his pursuit of a knighthood. The football star is said to have branded the committee "unappreciative c***s" and added that he "didn't care about being knighted" - though the ex-midfielder has claimed some of the leaked emails had been doctored.

The leaked emails claim the former footballer said: "I expected nothing less. It's a disgrace to be honest and if I was American I would of got something like this 10 years ago." He is also reported to have slammed opera star Katherine Jenkins after she was given an OBE. "Katherine Jenkins OBE for what? Singing at the rugby and going to see the troops. F***ing joke."
Beckham was appointed as an ambassador to HM's charity the King's Foundation, which was seen as an encouraging sign earlier last year. He said at the time: "I'm excited to be working with The King's Foundation and to have the opportunity to help raise awareness of the charity's work.
"I've always been keen to help young people to expand their horizons and I'm particularly looking forward to supporting the Foundation's education programmes and its efforts to ensure young people have greater access to nature." Ferguson backs Playlist for Life in dementia care role

The former Manchester United manager has been a long-time supporter of Playlist for Life, participating in fundraising and awareness campaigns. He began his ambassadorship by visiting the charity's Glasgow office, where he learned how Playlist for Life helps those living with dementia by using personally meaningful music. Sir Alex Ferguson with Michael Timmons (Executive Director, left) (Image: Jamie Simpson) Sir Alex said: "Dementia is a big challenge for all of us, but we all know someone close to us who has dementia. "It's not always easy to talk about, but music is a fantastic thing that can help. 'I'm beyond proud to be an ambassador for Playlist for Life. "Visiting the team and hearing more about the work they do, I can see they are leading the way in using music to transform the lives of people affected by dementia. The approach starts with creating a personal playlist of songs that evoke treasured memories or loved ones. L-R: Michael Timmons (Executive Director), Sir Alex Ferguson, Sandra Stark (Chair) and Frank Dunn (Trustee) (Image: Jamie Simpson) The organisation has trained nearly 10,000 health and social professionals to incorporate personal playlists into dementia care, with one team in NHS Fife reporting an 80 per cent reduction in medication for a group of people with dementia. Sir Alex has long supported the charity, offering auction prizes and appearing on national television to discuss the impact of meaningful music on dementia care. Michael Timmons, executive director of Playlist for Life, said: "Sir Alex's backing in this new role of ambassador will help us reach many more people living with dementia or caring for someone living with dementia. "It's a privilege to have Sir Alex Ferguson pulling on the Playlist for Life jersey as an official ambassador, following many years of quiet but generous support. "During his visit to our office, he seemed impressed by the team's work and understood the importance of our approach to dementia care." "We hope his support encourages more people to discover the power of personal playlists and create their own today.'

Ozzy Osbourne's final days in beloved Birmingham before death at 76

Ozzy Osbourne died today aged 76, with his wife Sharon and children by his side, just days after he performed his final gig in Birmingham with Black Sabbath. Music icon Ozzy Osbourne spent his final days in his cherished hometown of Birmingham before his tragic passing at the age of 76. ‌ The Black Sabbath frontman passed away today, with his wife Sharon, aged 72, and their children Kelly and Jack by his side after a valiant struggle with Parkinson's disease. Ozzy faced numerous health challenges over the years, but his life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2020. ‌ In the days leading up to his death, Ozzy realised his ambition to perform once again with his Black Sabbath bandmates, as they electrified Villa Park in Birmingham with their Back To The Beginning concert. Despite his failing health, Ozzy was resolute in his desire to take to the stage one last time, reports the Mirror. ‌ Speaking to Sirius XM in May, he shared: "I am in heavy training because I haven't done any physical work for the last seven years." He told the crowd: "By hook or by crook. I've got to make it there. I have got this trainer guy who helps people get back to normal. It's hard going, but he's convinced that he can pull it off for me. I'm giving it everything I've got." During the Back To The Beginning gig, an emotional Ozzy addressed the audience, saying: "I don't know what to say, man, I've been laid up for like six years. ‌ "You have no idea how I feel – thank you from the bottom of my heart." He expressed to the crowd in what has now become his final address. When questioned about his farewell performance, the legendary musician remarked: "It's a goodbye as far as my live performances go, and what a way to go out." ‌ Ozzy had never hidden his longing to return to the UK after living in America for several decades. However, numerous health issues hindered him and his wife, Sharon, from realising this dream. They were expected to settle in their Buckinghamshire home. In August 2022, after spending two decades in Los Angeles, he commented: "Everything's f***ing ridiculous (in America)" Now, it has been revealed that he achieved his final wish. A statement confirming his death listed the location as "Birmingham, England," indicating that he made it home one last time. ‌ Sources close to the family reveal that Ozzy's passing was 'unexpected to be this soon' but his children were immensely grateful to have spent time with him during his final days, following his last performance just over a fortnight ago. His daughters Aimee, 41, and Kelly, 40, were present to look after him as recently as last week, having flown in from Los Angeles, according to the Daily Mail. A close pal revealed to the publication: "Ozzy was always meant to come back to Britain to live in Buckinghamshire, it was where Sharon had spent so long preparing their family home for him." ‌ "There was much hope that he would be around for a lot longer than this but at one point there were fears they would not get him back from Los Angeles for the concert earlier this month. "He told the crowd as he addressed them for what is now the final time. Kelly has been at the house a lot in the last week or so, so has Aimee. It is terribly sad for all of them, they really hoped he would be able to carry on for a bit longer. But it's so lovely that he had his children around him during his last days." ‌ Just a fortnight prior to his passing, Ozzy also witnessed and celebrated his daughter Kelly's engagement. On Saturday July 5, Ozzy officially brought down the curtain on his Prince of Darkness era as he graced the stage one last time. The metal legend reunited with his Black Sabbath colleagues at Villa Park, Birmingham for what ranks among the most spectacular farewell performances in musical history. Following the magnificent gig, the Osbourne clan received a wonderful shock when Kelly's long-term beau Sid got down on one knee before her mum and dad Ozzy and Sharon. ‌ Sharing the delightful announcement on Instagram the following day, Kelly, 40, uploaded the heartwarming footage of Sid's proposal as he pledged to spend his remaining years with the former reality television personality. Alongside the footage, Kelly penned: "Oh, and this happened yesterday." In the touching video, Sharon could be heard instructing: "We've got to be quiet, hold on," while she signalled for silence from the crew backstage at the show. Then, Kelly's now fiancé was overheard declaring: "Kelly, you know I love you more than anything in the world. "Yet, Sid's heartfelt proposal was humorously disrupted by a jesting Ozzy who exclaimed: "F*** off! You're not marrying my daughter." Taking Ozzy's quip in stride, Sid chuckled and proceeded with his romantic gesture. ‌ He went on to say: "Nothing would make me happier than spending the rest of my life with you. So, in front of your family and all of our friends, Kelly, will you marry me?" A stunned Kelly then spun around, her face registering surprise before she covered it with her hands and nodded in agreement. The clip then captured Sid presenting the sparkling engagement ring to Ozzy, followed by one of Kelly's mates shouting 'about time', teasing Sid for not popping the question earlier. Kelly and Sid then embraced warmly, sealing the moment with a kiss as their friends and family celebrated in the background. Both Kelly and her brother Jack had ensured they were present for their father's monumental final performance, showering him with affection and accolades as he took to the stage one last time. Since his passing, an outpouring of tributes has come from stars such as Rod Stewart, David Beckham, and Elton John.

Ozzy Osbourne's final wish before death fulfilled by Sharon in moving moment

Ozzy Osbourne has passed away at the age of 76, surrounded by his close family including wife Sharon, just weeks after he performed on stage for the final time with Black Sabbath Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne's death was announced today with a brief but heartfelt statement released by his devastated family. It disclosed that the Black Sabbath icon's relatives, including his devoted wife of more than 40 years Sharon, had assembled around him in Birmingham for one last time as he tragically passed away. ‌ It came just weeks after the frontman took to the stage for the final time during his Back to the Beginning performance at Aston Villa's ground, Villa Park. ‌ The family statement said: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love." ‌ "We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis." The family statement was accompanied by a location marker, declaring: "Birmingham, England July 22, 2025" - revealing that Ozzy managed to return home one final time, the Mirror reports. ‌ Ozzy and Sharon had discussed wanting to move back to the UK from Los Angeles before the rocker's declining health. Ozzy declared he was "desperate to come home". Whilst they had hoped to move previously, continuing health problems for Ozzy had postponed the relocation. Despite the setbacks, the pair were anticipated to settle back into their Buckinghamshire residence. Ozzy had expressed his wish to return to England way back in August 2022 following more than two decades in Los Angeles as he stated: "everything's f***ing ridiculous (in America)." ‌ He also pointed to gun violence in the country as another factor behind his wish to relocate. "Everything's f***ing ridiculous [in America]. I'm fed up with people getting killed every day," he previously told The Observer. 'God knows how many people have been shot in school shootings. And there was that mass shooting in Vegas at that concert. … it's f***ing crazy.' ‌ However, the relocation was postponed for years due to Ozzy's deteriorating health. Chatting to Planet Rock's Loz Guest about Black Sabbath's star-studded Back to the Beginning gig on 5th July, Sharon confirmed that the performance had provided Ozzy with the opportunity to return home. She said: "He's coming over in March. His brothers (in Black Sabbath), he's excited to be here with them." ‌ When asked if they're still planning a permanent move back to the UK, Sharon responded: "Yeah, we are." The Back to the Beginning gig was described as Ozzy's "final performance" before his retirement. He started the performance by saying: 'Let me hear you. Are you ready? Let the madness begin!' ‌ The legendary rocker spent the performance on a black throne, as his band mates - Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward - performed around him. Ozzy told the crowd: 'It's so good to be on this f****** stage. You have no idea. I f****** love you all. Let me see your hands in the air. You are the best, each and every one of you. God bless you all.' In an emotional moment, Ozzy said: "I don't know what to say, man, I've been laid up for like six years. You have no idea how I feel – thank you from the bottom of my heart. You're all f****** special. Let's go crazy, come on."
