Sutton delivers verdict on Shin Yamada to Celtic transfer

The centre-forward departed Parkhead in January for Rennes, although he has since moved on to Birmingham City after his brief spell in France didn't go to plan. When Furuhashi left, Brendan Rodgers outlined his desire to sign a replacement number nine, although nothing came to fruition. Callum Osmand has since joined, but he isn't expected to be a regular senior starter. Read more: Yamada could be, though, and after playing in the EAFF E-1 Football Championship for Japan, he is reportedly set to join Celtic for £1.5 million. Sutton recently weighed in on the move. He said [RecordSport]: "And as for the latest striker target, is Shin Yamada going to be the long-awaited replacement for Kyogo? "We'll have to wait and see about that, too. At £1.5m Yamada isn't going to break the bank and he might turn out to be another smash hit. "No one expected Maeda to become the superstar he now is when he arrived for a similar fee a few years ago. I would hold fire on making comparisons between Yamada and Kyogo, though. "Kyogo had a stronger track record in the J League for a start. Yamada was prolific in 2024, when he scored more than 20 goals for the season. But he's only managed a couple in 2025. Likewise, in 2023, his goal return wasn't too much to shout about. "On paper and in clips, he does looks a similar type of player to Kyogo. He likes to play not he shoulder and ghost into space, and his best work comes in the penalty area. "Like Kyogo, he can drift out of games while he waits for his opportunity. He could be a useful addition for Celtic. "He has some pedigree with one cap for his country – and winning a single cap is always the sign of a top player. "But will he be ready to be the main striker? It's debatable."

Celtic vs Estrela Da Amadora LIVE score and goal updates from the friendly clash in Lisbon

It's a famous city for Celtic fans - and the Hoops are hoping the sun will shine on them again in Lisbon as they ramp up their pre-season plans. And Estrela Da Amadora will provide a stern test for the Scottish Premiership champions in the city where they famously lifted the European Cup. Brendan Rodgers ' men have already won two pre-season games so far this summer, having seen off Queen's Park and Cork City, before jetting off to Portugal. Things only ramp up from here with Sporting next up for the Hoops in their packed calendar ahead of the competitive stuff. But while teams across Scotland are preparing to kick off their campaigns in the Premier Sports Cup in roasting hot temperatures, it's a different story for the the holders. Fans will be hoping to catch and early glimpse of new recruits like Benjamin Nygren and Hayato Inamura in wet and drizzly Portugal as Callum McGregor and Co face the Primeira Liga side. 08:30Anthony Evans Forrest hopeful of Rodgers stay James Forrest insists Celtic's squad are desperate for Brendan Rodgers to stay beyond this season, writes Ryan MacDonald in Lisbon. The Hoops boss is out of contract next summer and has yet to commit to a new deal. Rodgers vowed to see out his initial three-year term after returning for a second stint in 2023. He's been true to his word and has rebuilt his legacy at Parkhead by winning back-to-back Doubles. And Forrest admits everyone in the 08:21Anthony Evans Jury debate Yamada Japanese forward Shin Yamada is poised to complete a £1.5million switch to Celtic from Kawasaki Frontale and Record Sport's top team have had their say on whether he can fill the void left by compatriot Kyogo Furuhashi back in January. Is Shin Yamada the man to replace Kyogo for Celtic? CRAIG SWAN: Hard to say. He'll have to be some striker to emulate Kyogo's success at Celtic. Difficult to follow that. ANDY NEWPORT: The Kawasaki Frontale frontman's recent J League record doesn't suggest that he is a natural-born poacher. But you never know, with the right handling Brendan Rodgers could polish up his rough attributes. MICHAEL GANNON: Yamada looks a decent player and he could prove to be another great bit of business from Japan. But his goal record isn't exactly spectacular and Celtic could really do with an experienced front man as well.
