Hajiji: GRS can propel Sabah to greater heights
PENAMPANG (July 12): Sabah has the potential to transform into a more developed, prosperous, peaceful and harmonious state if the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) continues to be given the mandate in the upcoming 17th State Election, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor.
He stressed that in nearly five years of leading the State Government, various significant achievements have been realised — including the recovery of Sabah's economy and a notable increase in investments and state revenue.
'When we took over the state administration in September 2020, Sabah was facing the worst economic situation in its history.
'However, through careful planning and the implementation of the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan (SMJ 1.0), we not only managed to revive the economy but also elevated Sabah's performance to an impressive level,' said the GRS chairman when officiating the closing of the PBS-STAR Convention 2025 at Hongkod Koisaan, Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) here today.
According to Hajiji, one of GRS's key achievements is the rise in Sabah's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which increased to RM84.3 billion in 2024 from RM83.2 billion in 2023.
'State revenue collection for three consecutive years — 2022, 2023 and 2024 — has reached almost RM7 billion, compared to only RM3.59 billion in 2020. The State Government's reserves now stand at RM8.6 billion. Domestic and foreign investments brought into Sabah since 2021 amount to RM35.38 billion.
'All these are indicators of a healthy economy and proof of the capability and excellence of the GRS-led State Government. No one can deny this — only the opposition chooses to close their eyes to these facts,' he said.
Hajiji added that GRS is not only focused on driving economic growth but is also committed to completing basic infrastructure projects, eradicating hardcore poverty, and improving the wellbeing of the people.
'God willing, if GRS continues to be given the mandate, we will ensure that all the planned development programmes are fully implemented — from urban centres to the rural interior,' he said.
He further emphasised that the SMJ Development Plan is not just a document but a comprehensive long-term strategy encompassing human capital, natural resource management, and administrative efficiency.
'With strong political will, coupled with an improving economic climate and the political stability we have fought for since 2020, I am confident Sabah will progress far ahead as a developed, peaceful and prosperous state,' he added.
Hajiji also reminded all GRS leaders and members to remain steadfast in defending the coalition's mission, especially in the face of opposition slanders and attempts to weaken its political strength.
He said the success of the GRS administration has made the opposition uneasy, prompting them to launch continuous attacks and spread falsehoods against the government and its leaders.
'They will not stop. They are jealous of what we have achieved. They want us to fail, weaken and fall.
'Therefore, I remind you — our house must be protected by us. GRS is our house, our shelter, and the foundation of our struggle. If we don't defend it, who will?' he said.
Meanwhile, Hajiji described the PBS-STAR 2025 Convention as a historic moment that strengthens local political consensus and signals that GRS is ready to face the 17th State Election with a united and credible leadership team.
He said the close cooperation between Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) represents political maturity and the prioritisation of Sabah's welfare over ideological differences.
'This convention demonstrates the unity among local parties with distinct histories and principles, and proves that GRS is capable of advancing as a political coalition that truly represents the aspirations of the people of Sabah,' he said.

Hajiji to consult GRS partners first on dissolving state assembly
GRS chairman Hajiji Noor, who is chief minister, said he would discuss and inform the GRS party presidents when the time comes to dissolve the assembly. PETALING JAYA : Any decision to seek dissolution of the Sabah state assembly, which would trigger fresh elections, will be made only with the consensus of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah partners, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said today. Hajiji, who is chief minister, said that while he holds the prerogative to advise the governor, Musa Aman, to dissolve the assembly, he prefers that the decision be made collectively, in line with a GRS commitment to joint decision-making. 'We are in GRS, and any decision must go through the Supreme Council,' Bernama quoted him as saying. 'I will discuss and inform the party presidents when the time comes to dissolve the assembly,' he told reporters in Penampang, Sabah, after closing a joint convention of Parti Bersatu Sabah and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku. However, he did not indicate when the discussion with the Supreme Council would be held. When asked whether he would allow the assembly to dissolve automatically this November, Hajiji said the matter would be considered carefully. The current state assembly's term expires on Nov 11, if not dissolved earlier. Election must be held within 60 days of dissolution. Commenting on speculation that GRS may contest the election independently, Hajiji said the matter would also be discussed at the Supreme Council level. The party has been in discussions with Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional about electoral cooperation, after stating that it could contest the election on its own should PH and BN form an alliance. Earlier today, the opposition Perikatan Nasional ruled out electoral alliance with GRS. GRS comprises Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, PBS, STAR, Parti Maju Sabah, United Sabah National Organisation , Liberal Democratic Party, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah and Parti Cinta Sabah. Hajiji described today's PBS-STAR convention as a historic milestone that strengthened local political cooperation. It reflected political maturity, prioritising the interests of the people and the state over political differences, he said.

Govt MPs to attend retreat next week
Deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said he can help to brief government MPs from Sarawak and Sabah. PETALING JAYA : The unity government will hold a retreat for all government MPs next week, says deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof. Fadillah said the retreat will allow the MPs to have a better understanding of the national issues that Putrajaya is facing, Bernama reported. Responding to questions about whether Gabungan Parti Sarawak MPs were present during a meeting between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Barisan Nasional MPs in Putrajaya last night, Fadillah said he is willing to brief MPs from GPS and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah if required. 'For GPS, we have no issue. With our small number of MPs, I can engage with them directly. These matters were discussed in the Cabinet, so I know what needs to be clarified. 'The prime minister would have limited time if he were to meet all MPs individually. I can assist by briefing GPS and GRS MPs. 'A retreat involving all unity government MPs, including ministers and deputy ministers, is scheduled for next week. We'll use that platform to provide further explanations,' Fadillah, a senior vice-president of GPS lynchpin Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, told reporters in Kuching today. Anwar attended a unity government retreat with 27 ministers at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya in January 2023. Bernama reported that the retreat was made up of briefing sessions covering key issues such as the implementation of key performance indicators, government structures, public administration affairs, and financial management. The sessions also touched on government procurement, government protocol, professionalism, sustainable development, economic scenarios and media communication. Earlier today, BN secretary-general Zambry Abdul Kadir said BN MPs met with Anwar at his official residence in Putrajaya last night as part of regular engagements with all parties in the unity government. He said the meeting revolved around policies and current matters that required clarification from the prime minister. Pakatan Harapan MPs and senators have been invited to a meeting with Anwar at his official residence in Putrajaya on July 14.

PN rejects cooperation with GRS at Sabah polls

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Perikatan Nasional has rejected any political cooperation with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah at the coming Sabah state election, with PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin saying the decision was because of what he described as a betrayal by GRS after its leaders, then in Bersatu, left in 2022. 'It's very difficult to work with GRS because the party has already turned its back on us. If you were in my position, would you want to work with them?' said Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president. 'I was the one who came up with the name GRS when they first started. Back then, it wasn't just Bersatu in the coalition – there were other parties too. I named it GRS, but it wasn't officially registered,' he said at a party event in Sandakan, according to Utusan Malaysia. Muhyiddin said PN was open to exploring electoral alliances with other parties in preparation for the Sabah polls, and would evaluate every state seat once the Sabah state assembly is dissolved. GRS was formed as an informal coalition of Sabah parties, including Sabah Bersatu, and formally registered in March 2022. Sabah Bersatu leaders left the party in December 2022, a month after a unity federal government coalition was formed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim comprising Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Parti Sarawak. The Sabah coalition had pledged support for Anwar's unity government but Bersatu was in the opposition in Parliament. Sabah Bersatu chief Hajiji Noor, who was also the chief minister, said the decision to leave the party was unanimous, and was based on the premise that the status quo was no longer tenable. GRS then dropped Bersatu as a coalition member and Hajiji announced that he would lead the semi-dormant local party Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, which was accepted as a GRS member. In January, PN deputy chairman Hamzah Zainudin said PN may contest at least 18 of the 73 seats in the Sabah election, which are expected this year. The state assembly's term expires in November, but may be dissolved sooner. PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed in May that PAS would contest at least six seats under the PN banner. GRS is in discussions with PH and BN about an electoral alliance, after the two peninsula-based parties announced they would join forces for the election, leading PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim to call for the PH-BN alliance to work with GRS. Hajiji has warned that GRS was prepared to go solo if PH teamed up with BN and maintained that Sabah-based parties should form the backbone of any alliance and lead the state government.
