Newport restaurant specialising in Sri Lankan cuisine given food hygiene rating

Yahoo09-02-2025
A Newport restaurant specialising in Sri Lankan cuisine has been given a good food hygiene rating.
Heritage House on Upper Dock Street was awarded a four-star rating, indicating an overall 'good' score by the Food Standards Agency.
The rating followed an inspection on December 12, 2024.
The restaurant opened in September last year, replacing Granchies Caribbean Takeaway.
The inspection assessed three areas: food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, and the management of food safety.
Hygienic handling of food, including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage, was rated 'very good.'
Cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, including layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities, and pest control, were rated 'good.'
However, the management of food safety was rated as 'generally satisfactory.'
The Food Standards Agency defines the management of food safety as "the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future."
The Food Hygiene Rating Act 2013 requires all food businesses in Wales to display their hygiene ratings prominently.
Inspections are carried out by local authority officers, and ratings range from zero, meaning urgent improvement is necessary, to five, meaning standards are excellent.
Businesses have the right to appeal against ratings.
Each inspection is carried out under three categories: hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, and the management of food safety.

Strong EU, UK demand sees Sri Lanka's apparel exports rise 5.2% in June

Sri Lanka's apparel export growth was propelled by a 23.1% increase in exports to the European Union (excluding the UK), amounting to $142.92m, and a 20.4% rise in exports to the UK, totaling $67.33m. Despite these increases, there was a noted decline in exports to the US by 5.7%, totaling $164.39m amid ongoing uncertainty around US president Trump's tariffs. There was also a contraction of 9.3% in other markets, which amounted to $64.75m. Looking at the first half of the year, from January to June 2025, there was an overall climb of 8.95% in Sri Lanka's apparel exports from $2.26bn in 2024 to $2.46bn in the current year. The EU region, excluding the UK, saw a significant rise of 16.7%, reaching $769.89m and shipment to the UK was up by 6.45%, totaling $366.53m. During this period, exports to the US increased by 4.1%, amounting to $910.92m and exports to other destinations grew by 8.9%, resulting in $413.60m. 'The figures reflect encouraging momentum in key markets like the EU and UK. The industry continues to navigate global headwinds with resilience, supported by strategic diversification and sustained buyer confidence in Sri Lankan apparel,' JAAF said in a statement. The country's apparel exports was particularly strong in March, with JAAF data showing a 11.65% growth to reach $467m and the first quarter exports saw an increase of 11.7%, amounting to $1.3bn. In April, JAAF endorsed the Sri Lankan Government's initiative to prioritise trade discussions with the US with an aim to establish equitable and reciprocal trading relationships. Waitrose apologises to shoppers as recall and 'do not eat' warning issued

Waitrose is recalling one of its products as the Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a 'do not eat' warning to shoppers. The supermarket has recalled its Waitrose Indian Takeaway for 2 because some of the boxes have been mispacked with spring rolls. The spring rolls contain sesame and soya which is not mentioned on the label, making them a health risk to anyone with allergies to the ingredients. The affected boxes have a use by date of July 25, 2025. Tuesday 22 July 2025 - Waitrose and Partners recalls Waitrose Indian Takeaway for 2 because of undeclared allergens (sesame and soya): — Food Standards Agency (@foodgov) July 22, 2025 A spokesman for the FSA said: 'Waitrose and Partners is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. 'The company has also issued a recall notice to its customers, which explains to customers why the product is being recalled and tells them what to do if they have bought the product. 'If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to sesame and/or soya, do not eat it. 'Instead, return it to your local Waitrose and Partners branch for a full refund. 'Please contact Waitrose Customer Care on 0800 188 884, option 4, for further information.' A Waitrose spokesman added: 'We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused.' If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food. In some cases, a 'Food Alert for Action' is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific actions to be taken on behalf of consumers.
