
ANZ businesses urged to prioritise AI readiness & strategy
Jeremy Pell, Area Vice President for ANZ at Elastic, stresses that AI has reached what he describes as a "critical inflection point." "AI has evolved from basic automation to intelligent systems that can connect enterprise applications and workflows," Pell explains. The success of such systems, however, depends on their ability to access structured and unstructured data rapidly and accurately. This evolution, he asserts, is visible in daily life through applications such as Uber's ride-matching and food delivery platforms, which leverage Elastic's Search AI technology to provide faster, more personalised, and context-aware services worldwide.
Pell also notes AI's increasingly critical role in cybersecurity. "Cybersecurity teams must leverage generative AI to strengthen defences against threats like deepfakes and phishing," he maintains. Enhanced search powered by AI is enabling organisations to reduce false positives in threat detection, accelerating both the identification and resolution of incidents. This, Pell believes, is shifting the security landscape and offers a major advantage to proactive businesses willing to embrace these tools.
As the technology becomes more integrated and influential, Pell points to the growing responsibility that comes with such progress. The Business Council of Australia's AI Agenda, for instance, sets forth ambitious goals to position the country as a global AI leader by 2028, focusing on digital infrastructure, skills, and the safe adoption of AI across industries. While AI's potential to reshape industries and improve quality of life is significant, Pell believes its true value will only be realised on open, adaptive platforms capable of offering real-time, holistic data insights. "At Elastic, we're proud to empower organisations to harness this new era of AI with confidence and agility," he says.
A complementary perspective comes from Kumar Mitra, Executive Director, CAP & ANZ, ISG, at Lenovo. Mitra heralds AI Appreciation Day as a "timely reminder that AI is no longer a distant frontier – it's a business-critical priority." Citing Lenovo's CIO Playbook 2025, developed with IDC, Mitra notes that more than 63% of Australian CIOs view aligning AI to business strategy as their top priority. Despite this, he points out, 58% of those surveyed identify data infrastructure as their principal barrier to advancing AI programmes. "It's clear that scaling AI isn't just about capability – it's about readiness," he insists.
Lenovo sees the path forward in what Mitra terms "Hybrid AI" – a distributed, flexible approach to running AI workloads wherever they deliver the greatest value, whether in the cloud, on-premises, or at the edge. Such agility addresses both security concerns and varying business needs. "AI done right can drive both economic and human progress," he adds, citing examples from transforming supply chains and accelerating healthcare diagnostics to enabling inclusive solutions for people with disabilities. For Mitra, it is essential for organisations to move beyond small-scale pilots and instead embed AI as a core component of their growth and inclusion strategies, realising its potential for "sustainable growth, inclusion, and real-world impact."
Both Pell and Mitra agree that the promise of AI lies not only in innovative applications but in strategic vision and robust infrastructure. As organisations in Australia and around the world mark AI Appreciation Day, the industry emphasis is on collaboration, responsible stewardship, and investment in systems that will enable AI to drive meaningful progress well into the future.

Last week, I was brainstorming something and threw a few stats on social media use and attention into Gemini. The AI yelled its summary back at me with this headline: 'THE ATTENTION APOCALYPSE'. We all know generative AI has bias, and that includes one towards bad news. It's hard to avoid headlines full of worry and fear about everything these days, and that applies to ones about social media, media and journalism. 'News avoidance' and 'declining trust in media' have become phrases that roll quickly and easily off the tongues of those of us in biz, keeping many of us awake at night and in constant conversation about what it means and why. The Reuters Institute Digital News report – compulsory reading for many in our industry, alongside the NZ On Air Where Are the Audiences survey – is rich with insight, and this year's report presented a tipping point for news consumption behaviour among under-35s in the United States. Over half (54% of 18–24s and 50% of 25–34s) now identify social media and video networks as their main source of news. Globally, across all 48 markets surveyed, 44% of 18–24-year-olds and 38% of 25–34-year-olds cite social media and video networks as their primary news source. New Zealand is not one of the markets surveyed, and we have our unique news landscape, but it's safe to assume these trends are being replicated here. The 2024 Where Are the Audiences survey showed global video sharing platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok) reach 90% of 15-24-year-olds. These findings are often presented in concerning tones, for many good reasons. Sometimes they're framed as a lack of engagement with news as we've known it among younger people, or patronisingly, as indifference. If you've spent any time on #nzpol TikTok or watching YouTube essays, you know that isn't true. There are always reasons to worry about where people get their information and the dominance of global tech companies. Sources have split into thousands of tributaries, people are more polarised, and the phrase 'post-truth' has been in widespread circulation for nearly a decade. There are also opportunities to change and meet people where they are. Describing the battle for control of your screen between Netflix and YouTube, and referencing the old go-to for the entertainment industry, 'content is king,' a talent executive for William Morris recently said, these days 'audience is king'. There isn't a silver bullet for addressing many of the challenges the industry faces and the problems a highly fragmented information environment creates. Fuelling our appetite for innovating, coming down from the mountain and meeting people where they are are just some of the things we can do. Now You Know, the new video explainer series we're launching today, is about meeting people where they are. Aimed at young people between the ages of 18-24, its goal is to create reliable, regular and relevant news explainers about issues that matter to young people. Another vital component part is a reliable and regular face at the helm each week. That's where Robbie Nicol comes in. Seagate unveils 30TB drives to power AI-ready data centres
Seagate has announced the global availability of its 30TB Exos M and IronWolf Pro hard drives, engineered to address growing demand for scalable storage in AI-driven data centres. The new drives are based on Seagate's Mozaic3+ platform and utilise heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology. With more than one million Mozaic hard drives shipped to date, Seagate is marking a milestone in its storage technology offering. The larger capacity options are designed for use in on-premises, private, and sovereign data centres, reflecting current trends towards AI adoption and compliance with new data sovereignty laws emerging around the world. Recent years have seen a significant increase in investment into on-premises and hybrid data centre infrastructure, driven in part by advancements in artificial intelligence and requirements for local data stewardship. Melyssa Banda, Senior Vice President of Edge Storage and Services at Seagate, addressed the shifting landscape: "Today, approximately 90% of the world's data is stored in just 10 countries. However, data gravity is increasingly pulling networks to the edge as nearly 150 countries adopt data sovereignty requirements, and AI workloads continue to expand. Datacentres - on-prem, private, and sovereign - are leveraging AI to unlock the value of their proprietary data," said Melyssa Banda, SVP of Edge Storage and Services, Seagate. "Our 30TB drives are designed to support these rapidly growing trends, delivering the capacity, efficiency, and resilience needed to power the AI workloads." Industry observers are aligning with the notion that the storage industry is experiencing fundamental shifts. Ed Burns, Research Director for Hard Disk Drive and Storage Technologies at IDC, commented on the wider infrastructure changes: "Hyperscalers and enterprise data centres are in the early stages of an all-out arms race to develop AI infrastructure resulting in rapidly increasing capex spending on performance-oriented hardware," said Ed Burns, Research Director, Hard Disk Drive and Storage Technologies at IDC. "While not often associated with performance such as low latency, the highest capacity HDDs are a critical strategic asset in the AI development process, filling the need for mass capacity storage of the foundational data essential to building and improving the highest quality AI models in the market today and into the future. Enterprise customers are seeking ways to improve the density of their data centres, lowering power consumption and square footage requirements while ensuring storage continues to meet strategic requirements, and Seagate's new 30TB Exos product is the highest density hard drive offered in the industry today. Hyperscale and enterprise data centre customers looking for optimal performance and cost tradeoffs for mass-capacity storage will benefit from Seagate's HAMR product roadmap, which is poised to accelerate areal density growth rates for HDDs in the years to come." Industry forecasts suggest rapid market changes are underway. Hewlett Packard Enterprise projects the on-premises AI market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 90%, reaching an estimated USD $42 billion within three years. NVIDIA has described the new approach to handling AI data as developing 'AI factories' – data centres that manufacture intelligence at scale. Industry demand for high-density and high-throughput storage correlates with the adoption of AI for use cases like video analytics and predictive maintenance. This shift has driven changes in storage architecture, such as greater adoption of disaggregated storage that separates compute and storage resources, enabling more flexibility and scalability. Product specifics The Exos M 30TB drive is engineered to provide high-capacity, energy efficient storage and allows for scalable solutions that support real-time analytics and reliable performance in edge environments. Similarly, the IronWolf Pro 30TB is optimised for NAS systems, supporting workloads that require both high throughput and low latency. Dhaval Panara, Product Manager with QNAP, addressed how these high-capacity drives enhance enterprise NAS applications: "QNAP NAS systems are increasingly used for on-premise AI workloads - enabling enterprises to run local AI models and leverage RAG and LLM technologies to process and analyse local datasets," said Dhaval Panara, Product Manager, QNAP. "By integrating Seagate's IronWolf Pro 30TB drives, we deliver petabyte-scale, high-integrity storage that ensures fast access, reliable performance, and scalable infrastructure at the edge." Evan Li, Head of International Business at UGREEN, also highlighted the drives' significance for edge applications: "With AI workloads increasingly moving to edge environments, reliable high-capacity storage becomes critical for local data processing. Seagate's IronWolf Pro 30TB drives provide the robust foundation UGREEN NAS systems require - delivering massive scalability and the operational stability needed for local AI applications," said Evan Li, Head of International Business, UGREEN. IDC analysis points to sectors such as retail, manufacturing, and financial services as key adopters of AI at the edge, with global NAS market growth projected at over 17% annually through to 2034. The convergence of AI, IoT, and hybrid cloud is cited as accelerating the need for high-integrity, large-capacity storage solutions. Regional availability and pricing The Exos M 30TB and IronWolf Pro 30TB drives are currently available through authorised resellers in Australia and are set to become available in New Zealand soon. Prices for the Exos M 30TB are listed at AUD $1,309 and NZD $1,569, while IronWolf Pro 30TB is available at AUD $1,319 and NZD $1,499.

Music Is At The Forefront Of AI Disruption, But NZ Artists Still Have Few Protections
Was the recent Velvet Sundown phenomenon a great music and media hoax, a sign of things to come, or just another example of what's already happening ? In case you missed it, the breakout act was streamed hundreds of thousands of times before claims emerged the band and their music were products of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). Despite the 'band' insisting they were real, an 'associate' later admitted it was indeed an 'art hoax' marketing stunt. Much of the subsequent commentary was concerned with fairness – particularly that a 'fake' band was succeeding at the expense of 'real' artists. But Velvet Sundown is only the most recent example in a long history of computer generated and assisted music creation – going back to the 1950s when a chemistry professor named Lejaren Hiller debuted a musical composition written by a computer. By the 1980s, David Cope's Experiments in Musical Intelligence created music so close to the style of Chopin and Bach it fooled classically trained musicians. Artist and composer Holly Herndon was highlighting a need for the ethical use and licensing of voice models and deepfakes several years before Grimes invited others to use AI-generated versions of her voice to make new music, and 'Deepfake Drake' alarmed the major record labels. At the same time, music companies, including Warner, Capitol and rapper-producer Timbaland, have since inked record contracts for AI-generated work. GenAI-powered tools, such as those offered by Izotope, LANDR and Apple, have become commonplace in mixing and mastering since the late 2000s. Machine learning technology also underpins streaming recommendations. Creativity and copyright Despite this relatively long history of technology's impact on music, it still tends to be framed as a future challenge. The New Zealand government's Strategy for Artificial Intelligence, released this month, suggests we're at a 'pivotal moment' as the AI-powered future approaches. In June, a draft insight briefing from Manata Taonga/Ministry for Culture & Heritage explored 'how digital technologies may transform the ways New Zealanders create, share and protect stories in 2040 and beyond'. It joins other recent publications by the Australasian Performing Rights Association and New Zealand's Artificial Intelligence Researchers Association, which grapple with the future impacts of AI technologies. One of the main issues is the use of copyright material to train AI systems. Last year, two AI startups, including the one used by Velvet Sundown, were sued by Sony, Universal and Warner for using unlicensed recordings as part of their training data. It's possible the models have been trained on recordings by local musicians without their permission, too. But without any requirement for tech firms to disclose their training data it can't be confirmed. Even if we did know, the copyright implications for works created by AI in Aotearoa New Zealand aren't clear. And it's not possible for musicians to opt out in any meaningful way. This goes against the data governance model designed by Te Mana Raraunga/Māori Sovereignty Network. Māori writer members of music rights administrator APRA AMCOS have also raised concerns about potential cultural appropriation and misuse due to GenAI. Recent research suggesting GenAI work displaces human output in creative industries is particularly worrying for local musicians who already struggle for visibility. But it's not an isolated phenomenon. In Australia, GenAI has reportedly been used to impersonate successful, emerging and dead artists. And French streaming service Deezer claims up to 20,000 tracks created by GenAI were being uploaded to its service daily. Regulation in the real world There has been increased scrutiny of streaming fraud, including a world-first criminal case brought last year against a musician who used bots to generate millions of streams for tracks created with GenAI. But on social media, musicians now compete for attention with a flood of ' AI slop ', with no real prospect of platforms doing anything about it. More troublingly, New Zealand law has been described as ' woefully inadequate ' at combating deepfakes and non-consensual intimate imagery that can damage artists' brands and livelihoods. The government's AI strategy prioritises adoption, innovation and a light-touch approach over these creative and cultural implications. But there is growing consensus internationally that regulatory intervention is warranted. The European Union has enacted legislation requiring AI services to be transparent about what they have trained their models on, an important first step towards an AI licensing regime for recorded and musical works. An Australian senate committee has recommended whole-of-economy AI guardrails, including transparency requirements in line with the EU. Denmark has gone even further, with plans to give every citizen copyright of their own facial features, voice and body, including specific protections for performing artists. It's nearly ten years since the music business was described as the ' canary in a coalmine ' for other industries and a bellwether of broader cultural and economic shifts.
