Rowland targets multiple titles after Formula E breakthrough
The Nissan driver, who clinched this year's crown in Berlin on July 13 with two races to spare, told reporters ahead of his home British season finale at London's ExCel this weekend that the championship was fairer now.
"In the early years we had this qualifying system which was just mental, where the top six in the championship went out on a track that was one second slower than (for) the next group and then half a second slower than the next group," he said.
"You could never pull away in the championship. You would basically get in the lead and then just start last in the next race."
In 2021, the last year before the Season Eight change, 18 drivers remained in title contention heading into the final two rounds.
Seven of the 11 championships, including the first three, have been decided in the final race.
Only Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne has so far managed to defend a Formula E crown, winning back-to-back titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
The current qualifying splits drivers into two groups of 11 based on championship position, with odd numbers in one group and evens in the other, before the top four from each advance to knockout duels.
"It's kind of much fairer and I think you have the opportunity to see people winning more back-to-back titles," said Rowland, 32.
"I think it's a little bit fairer now in terms of not being as much of a lottery. I expect that you will see the same guys towards the front and more repeat winners moving forward," said Rowland.
While this year's drivers' crown is won, Nissan is fighting Porsche for the team and manufacturers' titles.
Rowland said his ambition for the future, without the pressure of chasing a first title, was to try to cement himself as one of the top drivers in the series.
"It's a good motivation to have, to try and win three or four (titles)," he said.

Trump's Turnberry visit puts British Open back on agenda
Donald Trump's visit to Scotland's picturesque Turnberry underlines the U.S. president's long-held desire to host golf's illustrious British Open at the famous course, despite numerous stumbling blocks. When the golf fanatic purchased the storied resort in 2014, he would have been forgiven for thinking he would finally achieve his dream of seeing a men's major championship played at one of his many courses. But 2009 remains the last time Turnberry has hosted golf's only non-U.S. major, with the organizers, the Royal and Ancient (R&A), citing logistical challenges and fears that the event could become the Trump show. "The players all want to be at Turnberry," Trump told reporters after landing at Prestwick Airport, just north of his course, on Friday night, declaring it "the best course anywhere in the world." Following the storming of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters in January 2021, the R&A said the Open would not return to Turnberry until "the focus will be on the championship" rather than the course's proprietor. New CEO Mark Darbon struck a much softer tone earlier this month when he stressed that the R&A had "explicitly not" removed Turnberry's Ailsa course from its rotating pool of venues. But he added that upgrades to road, rail, and accommodation infrastructure around the site on Scotland's windswept west coast would be needed for any return. Darbon also revealed that he met Trump's son, Eric, earlier this year but denied U.K. media reports that the British government has been pressuring the R&A to put Turnberry back in the rotation. "We love the golf course but we've got some big logistical challenges there," Darbon told reporters covering the British Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, which ended last Sunday. Almost 280,000 fans were at Portrush, more than double the 120,000 at Turnberry in 2009, when journeyman Stewart Cink deprived veteran Tom Watson of a fairy-tale sixth Open title. Turnberry in 1977 hosted what is widely considered one of the greatest British Opens ever when Watson pipped Jack Nicklaus to the Claret Jug. The scenic course, instantly recognizable to golf fans due to its shimmering lighthouse, also hosted the Open in 1986 and 1994, when Greg Norman and Nick Price triumphed, respectively. Two-time major winner and Trump ally Bryson DeChambeau recently backed Turnberry to host golf's oldest major again. "It's one of the best golf courses in the world, and I'd love for it to be a part of the rotation," the 31-year-old told reporters at Portrush. DeChambeau, who hit chips on the White House lawn during a visit in June, sought to allay fears that the president would overshadow the event, as he did when he landed his helicopter near the course during the 2015 Women's British Open. Organisers will also be wary of possible protests. The site, about 80 kilometers south of Glasgow, was vandalized in March when protesters sprayed "GAZA IS NOT 4 SALE" across the grass, referring to Trump's suggestion of turning the Palestinian territory into luxury real estate. Trump has made much of his love for golf, using it for business and diplomacy, and even political one-upmanship. He often lambasted Barack Obama for regularly taking to the course during his time in the White House, before going on to play frequently himself as president. According to online trackers, Trump has played golf about 20% of the time since returning to the presidency in January. During his first term he played several times with then-Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Last year, Trump and Joe Biden sparred over their respective golf abilities during a television debate. Trump's handicap — the mark of a player's skill — has been listed as a mightily impressive three, but that and claims he has won 18 club championships have raised eyebrows, as documented by American golf writer Rick Reilly in his 2019 book "Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump." The Trump Organization began acquiring golf resorts in 1999 and lists 16 operations globally on its website, with more to follow. His Bedminster course near New York had been scheduled to host the 2022 PGA Championship, but organizers moved the major after the Capitol riots, sparking an angry response from the Trump Organization. And despite his deep passion for the game, it is highly unlikely that Trump will witness a major at Turnberry before his second presidential term ends in 2029.

Tokyo's Nikkei leads Asian rally after Japan-US trade deal
Japanese car makers soared on news that US tariffs on the sector would be slashed from 25 percent to 15 percent Tokyo stocks rallied with the yen Wednesday after Japan and the United States finally hammered out a trade deal to slash Donald Trump's tariffs, including those on the crucial car sector. Investors were also cheered by news that Washington had reached agreements with Indonesia and the Philippines, stoking optimism that other countries will achieve deals to avoid the worst of the US president's levies. Despite a lack of deals being made leading up to Trump's self-imposed August 1 cut-off date, equity markets have been on the march in recent weeks on optimism that governments will eventually get over the line. Japan had been one of those yet to sign, despite a string of trips to Washington by trade envoy Ryosei Akazawa, dampening investor sentiment in Tokyo. But Trump said Tuesday that officials had agreed to a "massive" deal that would include a 15 percent tariff on imports from Japan, down from the previously threatened 25 percent. The pact also saw the 25 percent levy on autos -- a major export to the United States -- slashed to 15 percent. "We just completed a massive Deal with Japan, perhaps the largest Deal ever made," Trump announced on his Truth Social platform. "Japan will invest, at my direction, $550 Billion Dollars into the United States, which will receive 90% of the Profits." He did not provide further details on the investment plan, but claimed the deal "will create Hundreds of Thousands of Jobs." Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said that he needed to examine the deal before commenting. Akazawa wrote on X: "Mission accomplished." Traders poured back into the market, pushing the Nikkei up more than two percent thanks to soaring automakers. Tokyo and Mitsubishi rocketed around 12 percent and Nissan jumped more than nine percent. The yen strengthened to 146.20 per dollar -- compared with close to 148 Tuesday. The unit had already enjoyed a recent tick-up after Ishiba vowed to remain in office despite a devastating weekend election loss. Trump also hailed an agreement with Manila that will see the toll on Philippine goods lowered by one percentage point to 19 percent, while tariffs on Indonesia were slashed from 32 percent to 19 percent. Shares in Manila and Jakarta rose. The announcements boosted hopes that other deals could be in the pipeline before next Friday's deadline, though talks with the European Union and South Korea remain elusive for now. Still, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he would meet his Chinese counterparts in Stockholm next week for talks, as a separate mid-August deadline approaches for US levies on Beijing to snap back to steeper levels. Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong built on its 2025 surge to hit its highest level since late 2021, while Shanghai, Sydney, Singapore and Taipei were also well up. Seoul was flat and Wellington dipped. The advances came after a broadly positive day on Wall Street where the S&P 500 hit another peak but the Nasdaq snapped a six-day streak of records.
