Capital's deadly dose of deception
Delhi has long stood as a beacon of modern healthcare. The national capital is home to gleaming hospitals, internationally trained specialists and cutting-edge treatments. Its medical tourism industry draws patients from every corner of India and beyond. Cancer care in the city is considered among the best in the country, renowned for its precise surgical procedures, immunotherapy, targeted drugs, multidisciplinary tumor boards and clinical trials. For many, the city offers hope where once only despair ruled. But behind the shiny facades of these world-class medical institutions lies a dangerous and dark underbelly: a sprawling counterfeit drug network that has infiltrated the very supply chains that patients trust with their lives. These are not mere cheap knock-offs; these are criminal deceptions that put patients at grave risk, especially those battling life-threatening illnesses like cancer.. The Crackdown In June, the Delhi drugs control department executed a citywide operation that uncovered the depth of the problem. Over 160 samples of suspected cancer medications were seized—many lacked proper documentation or bore suspicious markings. This comes as a suo motu action after Delhi Police busted a well-organized racket allegedly responsible for selling fake and unauthorised cancer drugs to patients. Within days, six individuals were arrested. The raids took place in Laxmi Nagar, Budh Vihar, and Chandni Chowk—areas selected for their proximity to major medical institutions such as AIIMS, Safdarjung, Lok Nayak, and Rajiv Gandhi hospitals. The haul recovered from one raid included vials worth `2.15 crore, 519 empty vials labelled as Keytruda, Infinzi, Tecentriq, Perjeta, Opdyta, Darzalex; 864 empty packaging cartons; along with packets of counterfeit solutions.

Days after Audi injures 5 sleeping on a footpath in Vasant Vihar in South Delhi, driver granted bail
'I was sleeping when I heard the sound of a car engine. Within a minute, it drove in our direction, ran over us… and then halted. Moments later, it sped away,' recalled Sabami (45), who works as a labourer. His wife and stepdaughter, and two friends, apart from him, were injured when a white Audi allegedly crashed into a footpath in South Delhi's Vasant Vihar in the early hours on July 9. Allegedly drunk while driving the car, the accused, Utsav Shekhar (40), was arrested soon after the incident. He has been granted bail, police said on Sunday. When the hit-and-run happened, a pedestrian came to their help, said Sabami, and noted down the vehicle's number to report to the police. While Sabami was discharged from the hospital last week, his wife, Ladhi (40), is still admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Ladhi's daughter from a previous marriage, Bimla (11), and the couple's friends — Narayani (35), and her husband Ram Chander (45) — were among the others injured in the incident. All three have been discharged from the hospital. All of them hail from Ajmer in Rajasthan and came to Delhi 10 years ago, said officers. It would still take Ladhi at least a week to recover, said the family. 'My wife suffered injuries in the neck and back, among other parts of the body. I just turned out to be lucky. If I too had suffered such grave injuries, who would have earned for the family?' he asked. Ratan Lal, 35, Ladhi's brother, who works as a labourer in Gurgaon, said that he got to know about the accident on July 10 and has been at AIIMS since then. 'Ladhi's treatment is still on. I hope that we will get some help with the hospital bill. We don't have much to pay,' he said. The accident took place near a petrol pump in front of Shiva Camp in Vasant Vihar. Around 1.45 am on July 9, a police control room call was made to report a crash in which five people were hit by an Audi car while they were sleeping on the footpath. 'Statements of eyewitnesses were recorded, wherein they stated that a white Audi Car ran over them while they were sleeping on the footpath,' DCP (South West) Amit Goel said. According to the police, Utsav then allegedly went on to hit another truck, about 200 metres from the accident spot, before he was finally arrested by the Delhi Police. The accused, police said, is a property dealer based in Noida and was going towards his home in Dwarka.

CM promises strong action against those responsible for girl setting her ablaze
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday promised stringent action against those responsible for forcing the 20-year-old college student to set herself ablaze after her sexual harassment complaint against a faculty member remained unaddressed by the institution's authorities. Majhi, following his return from Delhi, visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he met the girl battling for her life. The CM said the girl, a second-year student pursuing an integrated BEd programme at a govt college in Balasore district, is in an extremely critical state. "The govt has taken the matter with all seriousness to ensure that all those responsible are not spared. A committee of the higher education department has already started its ground investigation. While immediate action was already taken on Saturday, further strictest action will follow after completion of the ongoing probe," Majhi said. After consoling the distraught parents, Majhi said the medical team is collaborating virtually with their Delhi colleagues to save the girl's life. He indicated the possibility of airlifting her to AIIMS, Delhi if her condition stabilises enough for her to be moved. AIIMS Bhubaneswar executive director Ashutosh Biswas said a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from anaesthesia, pulmonary medicine, surgery, critical care, plastic surgery, nephrology and nursing has been formed to oversee the girl's treatment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "The patient, who suffered 90-95% burns, is on ventilator support in the ICU. Her condition is extremely critical. We are trying our best," Biswas said, adding that her internal organs, including kidneys and lungs, have been severely affected. "The next 24-48 hours is critical," Biswas said. The development comes on a day opposition parties held demonstrations and the National Commission for Women (NCW) sought a report from the state DGP. On Saturday, an assistant professor against whom she had recently filed a sexual harassment complaint with the college's internal complaints committee, was arrested. The govt also placed him under suspension along with the college principal. The CM affirmed the govt's commitment to preventing similar incidents in educational institutions. "We have directed all institutions to further strengthen their student grievance redressal mechanisms," Majhi said. The state crime branch, meanwhile, has sent a team of officers from its crime against women and children's wing (CAW&CW) to Balasore to assist the local police in the investigation.
