Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday promised stringent action against those responsible for forcing the 20-year-old college student to set herself ablaze after her sexual harassment complaint against a faculty member remained unaddressed by the institution's authorities.
Majhi, following his return from Delhi, visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where he met the girl battling for her life. The CM said the girl, a second-year student pursuing an integrated BEd programme at a govt college in Balasore district, is in an extremely critical state.
"The govt has taken the matter with all seriousness to ensure that all those responsible are not spared. A committee of the higher education department has already started its ground investigation.
While immediate action was already taken on Saturday, further strictest action will follow after completion of the ongoing probe," Majhi said.
After consoling the distraught parents, Majhi said the medical team is collaborating virtually with their Delhi colleagues to save the girl's life. He indicated the possibility of airlifting her to AIIMS, Delhi if her condition stabilises enough for her to be moved.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar executive director Ashutosh Biswas said a multidisciplinary team comprising specialists from anaesthesia, pulmonary medicine, surgery, critical care, plastic surgery, nephrology and nursing has been formed to oversee the girl's treatment.

"The patient, who suffered 90-95% burns, is on ventilator support in the ICU. Her condition is extremely critical. We are trying our best," Biswas said, adding that her internal organs, including kidneys and lungs, have been severely affected. "The next 24-48 hours is critical," Biswas said.
The development comes on a day opposition parties held demonstrations and the National Commission for Women (NCW) sought a report from the state DGP.
On Saturday, an assistant professor against whom she had recently filed a sexual harassment complaint with the college's internal complaints committee, was arrested. The govt also placed him under suspension along with the college principal.
The CM affirmed the govt's commitment to preventing similar incidents in educational institutions. "We have directed all institutions to further strengthen their student grievance redressal mechanisms," Majhi said.
The state crime branch, meanwhile, has sent a team of officers from its crime against women and children's wing (CAW&CW) to Balasore to assist the local police in the investigation.
