Kharif season: All set to meet cotton seed demand
The Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) has fixed the cotton production target at 10.18 million bales, to be cultivated over an area of 2.2 million hectares.
The update was shared during a meeting chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, on Tuesday. The meeting reviewed the availability and regulation of cotton and rice seeds, with a strong focus on addressing seed market malpractices and improving seed quality.
Minister Hussain voiced serious concerns over the widespread sale of non-certified and substandard seeds, blaming several companies for facilitating the distribution of fake seeds.
In a major crackdown, the ministry has banned 392 companies found guilty of selling uncertified seeds, the official of MNFS&R told the meeting.
'We were once ahead of India in agricultural innovation, but now we are trailing behind and using India as an example in terms of seed quality and yield,' the minister lamented.
He stressed the urgent need to reverse this trend by strengthening domestic seed production and curbing the import of foreign varieties.
The minister also raised alarm over the smuggling of seeds from India, which are being openly marketed through social media platforms.
He said the ministry is working closely with law enforcement agencies to take stern action against those involved in such illegal activities.
To ensure long-term improvements in seed quality and agricultural productivity, the government has established the National Seed Development Authority (NSDA).
The NSDA will regulate seed quality, monitor compliance, and prevent the sale of counterfeit seeds. Under new regulations, seed companies will be granted licenses for five years, with extensions based on their adherence to quality standards.
Minister Hussain emphasised that the use of certified seeds is critical to boosting per-acre yields and ensuring sustainability in the agriculture sector. He also called for stabilising seed prices and promoting good farming practices to mitigate the impact of market volatility.

PTI slams 'death cell' detention of Imran
The PTI has raised alarm over what it describes as "inhumane" treatment of its incarcerated founder, Imran Khan, claiming he is being held in a "death cell" under near-total isolation. Addressing a news conference on Thursday, PTI Central Secretary for Information Sheikh Waqas Akram alleged that Khan was confined to a solitary detention for 22 hours daily, denied access to newspapers, television, books, and barred from meeting his legal team and close associates. Highlighting concerns over the health and treatment of other detained PTI leaders, Akram pointed to the "deteriorating condition" of Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the "systematic violation" of Dr. Yasmin Rashid's rights, and the continued imprisonment of Ejaz Chaudhry despite Supreme Court orders granting him bail. On economic matters, Akram criticized the federal government over skyrocketing fuel prices, claiming petrol prices have surged by 82% over the past 15 months. "During PTI's term, petrol prices rose by Rs. 51, but the current government scrapped subsidies and pushed the price to Rs. 220 per liter," he said. He also accused the government of orchestrating a Rs. 92 billion sugar scandal, alleging that following the approval to export 765,000 metric tons of sugar, domestic supplies vanished from the market, sending prices soaring to Rs. 200 per kilogram. Addressing the May 9 cases, Akram claimed that the prosecution's position has collapsed following the withdrawal of a key investigating officer.

Govt, sugar mills agree on Rs165/kg ex-mill price

According to an official statement released on Tuesday, the meeting was attended by the chairman and senior members of PSMA, along with senior officials of the ministry. During the meeting, detailed deliberations were held on the enforcement of the ex-mill sugar price and steps needed to ensure immediate and uninterrupted supply of sugar across the country. As per the statement, the association appreciated the government's decision and assured its full cooperation in stabilising prices. The PSMA agreed to supply sugar at the ex-mill price of Rs165 per kg. It was mutually agreed that the impact of the price reduction would start reflecting in the retail market within the next two to three days. Speaking on the occasion, Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain stated, "The government is fully committed to providing relief to the public. All possible measures are being taken to ensure the availability of sugar at affordable prices." He further emphasised that strict implementation of the retail price will be ensured and hoarding or profiteering will not be tolerated. The minister highlighted that an effective mechanism has been devised to curb artificial price hikes and ensure consistent supply. He reiterated that public interest remains the top priority of the government and that the ministry will continue to work in close coordination with the sugar industry to maintain price stability, reads the statement.

PTI opposes sugar import move
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday strongly criticised the government's move to import 500,000 metric tons of sugar, calling it a 'deliberate, well-orchestrated conspiracy benefiting the sugar mafia and political elites'. A PTI spokesman accused the government of orchestrating the current sugar crisis to enable profiteering by powerful businessmen while ordinary citizens suffer. The government's earlier authorisation to export 765,000 metric tons of sugar, despite claims domestic supply would remain stable, has resulted in severe shortages and price hikes from Rs140 to over Rs200 per kilogramme.
