Corp seeks Kudumbashree aid for public toilet upkeep

Time of India10-06-2025
T'puram: In a major step towards improving urban sanitation, the city corporation approached the Kudumbashree Mission to take over the operation and maintenance of all public toilets in the city, excluding those run by Sulabh.
The move comes in response to growing concerns over hygiene standards and public dissatisfaction, especially after the city scored zero in public toilet cleanliness in the Swachh Survekshan Survey 2023 conducted by the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs.
The civic body officially requested Kudumbashree to submit a detailed proposal for year-round maintenance of the city's 46 public toilets. The decision follows the successful operation of seven toilet kiosks at Manaveeyam Veedhi by Kudumbashree workers.
These facilities remained closed for over a year before being reopened recently and managed efficiently by Kudumbashree.
"The cleanliness and discipline shown by Kudumbashree team at Manaveeyam Veedhi convinced us of their ability to handle the city's toilet infrastructure. We want to replicate this model city-wide," corporation secretary Jahamgeer S said.
In a recent meeting between the corporation secretary and the Kudumbashree executive director, the two sides began discussions on a comprehensive strategy to ensure maintenance, hygiene, and long-term viability of public toilets.
A detailed proposal is expected to be submitted shortly.
Kudumbashree Mission officials welcomed the move and expressed their readiness to take up the challenge. "We see this as a crucial step toward inclusive urban development and improving the quality of life for all residents, especially women and the elderly. Our teams are trained, committed, and ready to work with the corporation to bring sustainable change," a senior Kudumbashree official said.
Most public toilets in the city remained shut after private contractors abandoned their operation, citing a lack of revenue and poor usage. Although there are also public restrooms available in petrol stations and other outlets, the overall availability and upkeep have remained grossly inadequate.
Under the Smart City initiative, six public toilets were upgraded recently. These include facilities at the corporation campus, Putharikandam Maidanam, Thampanoor KSRTC outgate and ingate, and Vanchiyoor.
These upgraded toilets are being viewed as benchmarks for cleanliness and accessibility.
Despite these improvements, the corporation acknowledged significant gaps in toilet infrastructure.
The state govt also initiated a statewide hygiene survey of public toilets, signalling a broader and more coordinated approach to sanitation across Kerala.

Girder launching work of Thane's Kopri railway flyover completed

The installation of girders for the Kopri railway flyover, a key connector between Thane East and Thane West, undertaken by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) was completed this week, as part of the ongoing Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme (SATIS) project under the Smart City initiative, officials said on Friday. The critical work on the important stretch over the railway track, which had been pending for almost a year, involved the placement of heavy girders across tracks and was executed using special mega railway blocks. The girder launching work began on July 26 and was completed over multiple nights. To set the stage ready for work, the traffic police set in place vehicle diversions to and from Thane East for eight days, even before the girder installation work began. 'That night, two girders weighing approximately 100 tonnes were lifted and placed across the railway lines. On July 27, another girder weighing 50 tonnes was installed. The final two girders, both weighing 100 tonnes, were launched late on the night of July 29 and successfully installed by early morning on July 30,' a Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) officer associated with the project said on Friday. Traffic on the Kopri flyover was diverted to allow for the safe movement of cranes and equipment. 'A team of 18 engineers and 40 workers carried out the nighttime operations,' the officer added. With the main phase of work now done, traffic congestion in the Kopri area is expected to reduce. The remaining construction work will continue until August 4 without further traffic diversions, officials said. With the railway section of the work now complete, the rest of the project is expected to gain momentum. The remaining phases will be carried out during night shifts until August 4, with traffic halts on the Kopri flyover, said the officer. The project is part of TMC's effort to improve connectivity and decongest the area around the station. The planning and execution of the girder installation was led by Additional Municipal Commissioner Sandeep Malvi, Deputy City Engineer Sudhir Gaikwad, and Executive Engineer Dhananjay Mode.

Aundh, Baner-Balewadi residents raise concern over traffic chaos, demand better roads, clearing of encroachments

1 2 Pune: Residents of Aundh, Baner-Balewadi on Thursday flagged various issues hampering daily commute, such as traffic chaos, poor condition of roads, and broken lids of drainage chambers in their areas. At a mohalla committee meeting held at Aundh ward office, the residents demanded that the civic authorities initiate steps to solve these issues. The residents said they expected some positive outcomes before the next meeting. Kalyani Tokekar, a local resident who attended the meeting, said, "Lack of maintenance of roads is a serious issue. Poor condition of roads has been causing many problems for riders and walkers, slowing down overall traffic. We also brought to notice that a person lost life recently in the area due to the poor condition of roads. The officials assured us that the roads would be repaired soon." Another resident, Mahesh Sutar, said many roads in Sutarwadi and adjacent areas lack proper stormwater channels, leading to frequent waterlogging. Drainage chambers should be repaired at regular intervals. Many Smart City projects are not handed over to the civic administration, owing to which these facilities are not being brought to use. Sutar also suggested some changes in the PMPML bus routes to benefit commuters. Aundh resident Ajay Shinde said that civic officials should carry out inspection drives of roads at key junctions and market areas jointly with citizens. Officials from the Aundh ward office said that steps would be taken to resolve maximum issues. "We will also work in coordination with the road and drainage departments to carry out repairs," officials said.

From ruin to resilience: 46 Wayanad women sew new hope with Bailey project

A year after devastating landslides swept through Wayanad's Mundakkai and Chooralmala in Kerala, a group of 46 women have stitched together a quiet but powerful comeback — one umbrella and bag at a time. Their journey to recovery, resilience and self-reliance now proudly carries the name 'Bailey', inspired by the Bailey bridge built by the Indian Army at Chooralmala, the first sign of hope in the midst of 'Bailey Umbrella and Bags Project' was launched by the district administration in partnership with Kudumbashree, a poverty eradication and women empowerment program implemented by the State Poverty Eradication Mission (SPEM), to help women who had lost everything find their footing again. It is no ordinary livelihood scheme. For many of these women, it marks the beginning of a new chapter — one with the rustle of fabric, the clack of sewing machines and the quiet dignity of earning an first umbrellas — 390 of them — were made with materials provided by the Indian Army, who had been at the frontlines of rescue operations. Training sessions followed, led by Kudumbashree and the administration, helping the women hone their craft. Soon, their colourful umbrellas began appearing in Kudumbashree stalls and Tribal Department outlets. In Kalpetta's civil station, a permanent counter now proudly showcases the Bailey brand. The bags have their own story to tell. What began as a modest production line is now bustling with orders — 277 bags from Kudumbashree, 50 from the Suchitwa Mission, 370 from NABARD, 50 from the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, 100 from the State Bank of India, a whopping 1,000 from Ananterra Resort, and 100 more from the Department of Commerce. Each order is a nod of encouragement, a step are now underway to take these handcrafted products beyond Wayanad — into local markets and online platforms. For the women, the Bailey Bags project is no longer just a workplace; it is a place of healing, purpose and shared strength. Minister for Local Self Government MB Rajesh couldn't be prouder. 'They are preparing a great model of revival,' he wrote. 'Today, these families can ensure income and livelihood. The name of these initiatives, 'Bailey', also shares the message of survival of Mundakkai.' And as Bailey umbrellas begin to dot the streets and Bailey bags find their way into homes, one thing is clear — this is not just a project, but a quiet celebration of survival.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Kerala
