Prayer service held for mother and two children killed in shooting incident
Vanessa Whyte, 45, a vet originally from Co Clare, her son James, 14, and daughter Sara, 13, were killed in a suspected triple murder and attempted suicide at a house in Maguiresbridge on Wednesday morning.
Ms Whyte was originally from Barefield, a village near Ennis in Co Clare.
Hundreds of people attended the prayer service, which took place in Barefield on Sunday evening.
Parish priest Fr Tom Fitzpatrick said that Ms Whyte was a woman who loved her children 'fiercely', and wanted the best for them.
He described how she worked hard and laughed a lot, and carried burdens 'we may never fully understand'.
Fr Fitzpatrick added: 'Vanessa Whyte and her son James and daughter Sara, the unspeakable tragedy that has befallen our parish is something that is very hard to focus in on and get our minds around.
'But we're here, and that's the main thing. And we are here as well, not just praying for the three of them tonight in a very special way, and asking the Lord to take them to himself, that they be at peace. And I know they are.
'We're also here to remember and be a support for (Vanessa's mother) Mary and her family, and the siblings. They're at home tonight, they decided not to come. It might be easier for themselves, and for ourselves here too, maybe if they were just looking in online from home.
'So we're thinking of them in a very special way. Tonight we come to remember Vanessa and to hold Vanessa's family.'
Three candles representing Ms Whyte, James and Sara sat on the altar.
Those gathered were told that she was a woman who 'gave and gave'.
'Vanessa was a mother. She was a daughter, a sister, an aunty and a great friend to so many people,' Fr Fitzpatrick added.
'She was a woman who loved her children fiercely she wanted the best for them. She worked hard, and she laughed a lot, and she carried burdens that we may never ever fully understand.
'Her life was incredibly precious. James and Sara, young lives just beginning, so full of promise, so loved, so full of light, they've been taken away from this world all too soon in a violent way.
'We just find it impossible, my dear friends, to make sense of any of it. We cannot rationalise what should never have taken place, what we can do is remember the pain that we feel now, that pain is borne out of love.
'If we didn't love Vanessa, and so many of you would have known her, and if we didn't love her children, we wouldn't be grieving. This heartbreak is the price we pay for love, but it is also love in itself that will help Vanessa's family and all of us indeed, to carry it over the weeks and months to come.
'Mary, I know you're at home and you're listening. She was Vanessa's beloved mother, and her grief is a very deep ocean indeed.
'No mother should ever have to endure this. And yet, Mary, I know, will find herself surrounded by people who care deeply.
'She will meet them over the next number of days. These same people, all of us here, will stand beside her, not just during these dark days, but in the days and the weeks to come as well.'
He said the family's hearts have been 'fractured beyond belief'.
'You have lost a sister, a niece and a nephew, and there are no words that can fill the space that they have left behind. But you're not alone.
'You are held by a community of people who are walking with you through this darkness.'
A murder investigation has been launched, while an adult male remains in a serious condition in hospital.
It is understood that the funeral of Ms Whyte and her two children will take place in Barefield later this week.
On Saturday, detectives from the major investigation team, who are carrying out the murder investigation, said they are continuing with their inquiries and appealed for information involving the movements of a vehicle.
Detective Chief Inspector Neil McGuinness said: 'Our investigation is ongoing and we are working tirelessly to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
'I would continue to appeal generally for anyone with information to come forward, and more specifically, I would ask anyone who saw a silver Mercedes saloon car being driven in the Clones Road area of Newtownbutler, or between Maguiresbridge and Newtownbutler, on the evening of Tuesday July 22 to call detectives on 101, quoting reference 276 23/07/25.
'Anyone who was travelling in the area and who may have captured dashcam footage which could assist, please get in touch.'
The man who remains in a serious condition in hospital was a member of the same household, the PSNI said.

A mother and her two children allegedly murdered in Co Fermanagh are now "together and finally safe", mourners at their funeral have heard. Crowds gathered in the Co Clare village of Barefield on Saturday to pay their respects to Vanessa Whyte, 45, and her children, James Rutledge, 14, and Sara Rutledge, 13. The trio were shot dead at their home in Maguiresbridge in July. Ian Rutledge, 43, died in hospital following the shooting. It is understood the agricultural contractor is the only suspect in the shooting of his family. As requested by the family, many mourners wore bright colours and GAA jerseys, lining the main street to watch the three hearses pass. Among those attending the service at the Church of the Immaculate Conception were a representative for Taoiseach Micheál Martin and GAA president Jarlath Burns. Delivering the eulogy, Ms Whyte's sister Regina said the family had been robbed of their loved ones. 'Vanessa, James and Sara were taken from this world in a cruel and vicious manner – there are no words available to express how this has impacted our family and their friends,' she said. 'We as a family have been robbed of both a relationship with our sister and a chance to see James and Sara grow up, and they have been robbed of the remainder of their lives. 'It has taken us 11 days to be in a position to have Vanessa, James and Sara back to Clare. 'This was supposed to be a joyous occasion where Vanessa would see her new nephew, and Sara and James would meet their baby cousin for the first time. Instead we are in the position of choosing coffins, final burial places and funeral hymns. 'For us as a family, the only comfort we have is that Vanessa, James and Sara are together and finally safe. 'Vanessa will have her children at either side of her forever, as they were when they were alive.' She described her sister as 'witty, bright, kind and determined', and said James and Sara were the 'focus of her world'. She recalled James's love of the GAA, playing both hurling and football, and also cricket, adding he had been acknowledged as the 'kind, bright, determined teenager we as a family know so well'. 'James's smile was infectious, and his loyalty was strong,' she said. Sara was remembered as having a deep love for animals, and aspiring to follow in her mother's footsteps to become a vet, as well as loving sport. 'She was an excellent hurler, a footballer and skilled at netball. She was a team player, a quiet leader, and like every sister, never let James away with anything,' she said. 'Amazing Grace' and 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' were among the songs played during the service. Bishop Ger Nash, Bishop of Ferns and a family friend, described heartbreak over the 'tragic and unspeakable loss of three lives with so much to give to the world'. 'The tragic events of last week, and the ripping away of three people from their family and friends leave us searching for answers and coming back again and again to the only answer that is completely true: 'We don't know',' he said. Crowds also turned out for Ms Whyte, James and Sara for a service of removal in Maguiresbridge on Wednesday. Ms Whyte, James and Sara are to be buried together in Templemaley Cemetery.

Owner of Montana bar where gunman killed four reveals 'motive' as frantic manhunt for suspect continues
The owner of a Montana bar where a gunman killed four people before going on the run believes the suspect just 'snapped'. David Gwerder, owner of the Owl Bar, said alleged shooter Michael Paul Brown likely knew the victims of Friday's attack. Brown, 45, is an army veteran who lived next to the establishment in Anaconda. He is accused of killing three patrons and a bartender. The town remains on high alert as the manhunt for Brown enters its second day. 'He knew everybody that was in that bar, I guarantee you that,' Gwerder said. 'He didn't have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped.' Gwerder was not at the bar at the time of the shooting and believes the victims were the only ones inside. Brown fled the scene around 10:30am on Friday in a white truck which was later found abandoned, police said. He is still at large and believed to be armed and dangerous. Members of the public are being urged to avoid any contact with him if spotted. One person who spoke with MTN News said they had been at a nearby bar and saw the shooter walking around with a rifle. Brown served in the Army as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005 and deployed to Iraq from early 2004 until March 2005, according to Lieutenant Colonel Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson. The suspect was in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to March 2009, Castro said. He left military service in the rank of sergeant. His home was cleared by a SWAT team and he was last seen in the Stump Town area, just west of Anaconda, authorities said. Police are focusing on the nearby mountains near Stumptown Road and residents were encouraged to stay indoors Friday evening. As reports of the shooting spread through town, business owners locked their doors and sheltered inside with customers. At Caterpillars to Butterflies Childcare, a nursery a few blocks from the shooting scene, owner Sage Huot said she'd kept the children inside all day after someone called to let her know about the violence. 'We're constantly doing practice drills, fire drills and active shooter drills, so we locked down the facility, locked the doors, and we have a quiet spot where we play activities away from all of our windows and doors,' Huot said. The owner of the Firefly Café in Anaconda said she locked up her business at about 11am Friday after getting alerted to the shooting by a friend. 'We are Montana, so guns are not new to us,' café owner Barbie Nelson said. 'For our town to be locked down, everybody's pretty rattled.' A woman believed to be Brown's daughter took to social media as the manhunt continued saying: 'Mental health is real.' He would tell me these outrageous stories of his that were straight out of motion pictures! Brown is accused of killing three patrons and a bartender , who Gwerder - who was not at the bar at the time of the shooting - believes were the only people in place at the time 'Mikey Brown needed help! Several locals contacted authorities and pleaded for them to do something to no avail! He was always polite to everyone he was in contact with! Gentle soul, I knew him for years, and watched his mental health decline! 'PTSD is a serious disease! Crowds attend funeral of mum and children shot dead in Northern Ireland
Crowds have turned out for the funeral of a murdered mother and her children in Northern Ireland. Veterinary surgeon Vanessa Whyte, 45, and her children James Rutledge, 14, and Sara Rutledge, 13, died in a shooting at their home in Maguiresbridge, Co Fermanagh, in July. The suspect, Ian Rutledge, a 43-year-old agricultural worker, died on Monday evening. He had himself suffered a gunshot wound during the attack on 23 July. Rutledge was taken to hospital, where he remained in a serious condition until the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) announced he had died. It is understood he was the only suspect in the murder investigation. Police in Northern Ireland have said a triple murder and attempted suicide was a line of inquiry. Bright colours at funeral Following a service of removal in Maguiresbridge on Wednesday, a funeral service took place for Ms Whyte and her children in Barefield, Co Clare, where she was originally from. Crowds travelled to attend the funeral at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday. Many of the mourners wore Gaelic Athletic Association jerseys and bright colours as requested by the family as they lined the main street to watch the three hearses pass by. The three are to be buried together in Templemaley Cemetery later. Tributes paid to 'lovely-natured' children A local Gaelic football club said last week that Ms White and her children were all "active and beloved" members of their club. Sara and James Rutledge also used to be part of a local cricket club, which said in a statement that it was "extremely saddened by the tragic events". "Both of them turned out to be talented young cricketers and two absolutely lovely-natured children," the statement read.
