Unemployed man fined RM3,000 for threatening media crew

JOHOR BARU: A day after admitting to two counts of mischief and reckless driving, a father of seven was once again brought before the magistrate's court today, this time for threatening media crew who were reporting on his case.
Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah, 50, pleaded guilty after the charge was read before magistrate Nabilah Nizam.
The unemployed man was accused of criminal intimidation by uttering threatening words towards a TV3 cameraman with the intent to cause fear.
The incident allegedly took place in the compound of the Johor Baru Court Complex at 9am yesterday, shortly after the proceedings involving his road rage case.
He was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor R. Nevina urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence, stating that the threat was serious and the victim was merely carrying out his duties as a cameraman.
The accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower fine citing that he was unemployed and had to support his wife and seven children.
The court sentenced him to a fine of RM3,000 or four months' imprisonment if he fails to pay.
Meanwhile, several media practitioners, including the TV3 cameraman, filed a police report at the Johor Baru South police headquarters yesterday afternoon, alleging they were threatened while covering the court proceedings.
Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the suspect was arrested this morning in Bandar Baru Uda.
In the 9am incident yesterday, the suspect allegedly issued threats against a TV3 cameraman, a 'Berita Harian' photographer and an 'Oriental Daily' journalist.
Raub said video footage showed the suspect covering his face while walking into the courtroom, and confirmed that threatening words were directed specifically at the TV3 cameraman.
Yesterday, Firdaus was fined RM13,000 by the magistrate's court here on two charges of crashing into a Perodua Axia and driving dangerously in an incident along Jalan Tun Razak last Sunday.

Police uncover RM5m drugs hidden in cow dung in Kelantan raids

PASIR MAS: Police uncovered a major drug trafficking operation after discovering over 35.4 kilograms of 'pil kuda' concealed in a pile of cow dung during raids in Pasir Mas and Tumpat. The drugs, valued at RM5.04 million, were seized alongside luxury items worth RM1.1 million. Acting Director of Bukit Aman's Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN), Datuk Mat Zani @ Mohd Salahuddin Che Ali, confirmed the arrests of six suspects, including five men and one woman aged 25 to 39. The syndicate, active since 2022, allegedly targeted school students and teenagers in Kelantan, Klang Valley, and Johor Bahru. The breakthrough came after a year-long intelligence operation. Police first intercepted a Perodua Axia on Jalan Gajah Mati, Banggol Chica, finding 115 grams of 'pil kuda'. A subsequent search at the suspect's home uncovered another 112 grams. Behind the house, officers discovered 20 kg of the drug hidden in a cattle shed beneath cow dung. Simultaneous raids led to the arrest of another suspect with 15.4 kg of 'pil kuda' in his Toyota Hilux. Further operations in Pasir Mas and Tumpat netted three more individuals, including the wife of the primary suspect. Authorities believe the syndicate laundered drug profits through businesses like a seafood restaurant, salon, and online ventures. All suspects tested negative for drugs in initial screenings, though two had prior drug-related records. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, with suspects remanded for seven days. Mat Zani stated that the syndicate used the cattle shed as a storage hub before distributing the drugs. Police remain vigilant in curbing drug abuse, particularly in Kelantan, a high-risk border state. - Bernama

Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the Commercial Crime Investigation Division of the Northeast district police headquarters received a report from the 47-year-old local woman yesterday. "According to the victim, on June 20, while she was at her office in George Town, she received a phone call from an unknown number and spoke to a woman who claimed to be from Pos Laju Malaysia. "The caller informed her that a package containing an identity card, ATM card, and cheque book was sent under her name from Kuching, Sarawak to Terengganu and the package had been detained by the police,' he said in a statement today. Photo for illustrative purposes only - Pixabay The call was then allegedly redirected to a police station in Terengganu, where the victim spoke to another individual posing as a police officer. She was told that her bank account was suspected of being involved in a money laundering case. Mohd Alwi said the 'police officer' also instructed the woman to surrender all her money for auditing purposes and assured that it would be returned once the investigation was completed. He said the suspect also threatened the woman, warning that a warrant for her arrest would be issued if she failed to comply. "Out of fear, the victim then made 26 online fund transfers into five different bank accounts provided by the suspect between June 26 and June 30, amounting to RM1.24 million. "The woman only began to suspect she had been duped after sharing her predicament with family members, who told her it was a scam. She then lodged a police report to enable an investigation to be carried out,' he said. He added that further investigations are underway, including efforts to trace the syndicate's network. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - BERNAMA More Like This

Company director detained for RM75m money laundering in fibre project

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has secured a four-day remand order against a company director with the title 'Datuk' for suspected money laundering involving RM75 million. The case is tied to a fibre network development project. Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin granted the remand until July 6 following the suspect's arrest at the MACC headquarters yesterday. The man, in his 50s, is accused of channelling funds from a RM400 million loan to his own company in 2012. A MACC source revealed that the arrest followed Op Fibre, a special operation conducted on June 30. Raids at four locations in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur led to the freezing of 12 bank accounts worth RM400,000. Senior Director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the case is being probed under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
