Unemployed man fined RM3,000 for threatening media crew

JOHOR BARU: A day after admitting to two counts of mischief and reckless driving, a father of seven was once again brought before the magistrate's court today, this time for threatening media crew who were reporting on his case. Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah, 50, pleaded guilty after the charge was read before magistrate Nabilah Nizam. The unemployed man was accused of criminal intimidation by uttering threatening words towards a TV3 cameraman with the intent to cause fear. The incident allegedly took place in the compound of the Johor Baru Court Complex at 9am yesterday, shortly after the proceedings involving his road rage case. He was charged under Section 506 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor R. Nevina urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence, stating that the threat was serious and the victim was merely carrying out his duties as a cameraman. The accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower fine citing that he was unemployed and had to support his wife and seven children. The court sentenced him to a fine of RM3,000 or four months' imprisonment if he fails to pay. Meanwhile, several media practitioners, including the TV3 cameraman, filed a police report at the Johor Baru South police headquarters yesterday afternoon, alleging they were threatened while covering the court proceedings. Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the suspect was arrested this morning in Bandar Baru Uda. In the 9am incident yesterday, the suspect allegedly issued threats against a TV3 cameraman, a 'Berita Harian' photographer and an 'Oriental Daily' journalist. Raub said video footage showed the suspect covering his face while walking into the courtroom, and confirmed that threatening words were directed specifically at the TV3 cameraman. Yesterday, Firdaus was fined RM13,000 by the magistrate's court here on two charges of crashing into a Perodua Axia and driving dangerously in an incident along Jalan Tun Razak last Sunday.

Unemployed man fined RM13,000 for mischief, reckless driving

JOHOR BARU: Two Magistrates' Courts fined an unemployed man a total of RM13,000 here today after he pleaded guilty to mischief and reckless driving, endangering others. Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah, 50, was sentenced on both charges before Magistrates Atifah Hazimah Wahab and Nur Fatin Mohamad Farid. The court also ordered that he serve 18 months in jail if he failed to pay the fines. His driving licence was also revoked by the court. Before Magistrate Atifah Hazimah, the accused was charged with committing mischief by rear-ending a black Perodua Axia belonging to a man, causing RM15,300 in damages. The offence was framed under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison, a fine, or both, upon conviction. Meanwhile, the second charge before Magistrate Nur Fatin, the accused was charged with driving a Toyota Hilux on a public road without due care and attention, thereby endangering other road users. The charge, under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, carries a maximum fine of RM10,000, imprisonment of up to 12 months, and endorsement of the offender's driving licence. The offences were committed at Susur 6, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, at about 3.10pm on Sunday. Visibly emotional, Muhammad Firdaus tearfully pleaded for leniency, telling the court that he had no income and was supporting a wife and seven children. "I regret my actions and will not repeat them," he said. Deputy public prosecutors Nik Noratini Nik Azman and Amirah Tasnim Saleh urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, citing the financial loss suffered by the victim and the importance of public interest outweighing the personal circumstances of the accused. Magistrates Atifah Hazimah and Nur Fatin handed down fines of RM7,500 or 12 months' jail and RM5,500 or six months' jail respectively, with court-ordered endorsements on the accused's driving licence. According to the facts of the case, the 63-year-old victim lodged a police report alleging that the accused had intentionally rammed the rear of his black Perodua Axia once and the front twice before fleeing the scene. The incident was captured on dashcam footage, and eyewitnesses were present at the time. Police arrested the accused at 6.30pm on Monday at Jalan Langkasuka here. Investigations confirmed the acts of mischief as alleged.
