8 top tips for staying safe at TRNSMT from ear protection to dealing with crowds
One of Scotland's most well-loved and biggest festivals, TRNSMT will see some 150,000 music lovers descend on Glasgow Green next weekend. Headlining the event between July 11 and July 13 will be 50 Cent, Biffy Clyro and Snow Patrol.
Other major names on the bill for TRNSMT 2025 include Gracie Abrams, Fontaines D.C. and The Script. Often perceived as a replacement for the long-cancelled iconic festival T in the Park, TRNSMT has become a staple of Scots summers since it began in 2017.
But as the festival approaches, it's important to know how to keep yourself safe in the huge crowds and possible hot weather over the weekend.
With this in mind, expert Nick Higginson, CEO at Phoenix Health & Safety is sharing his top eight tips for staying safe at festivals this summer.
Here is his advice.
1. Be mindful of the crowd
Nick explains: 'To ensure you're safe in a festival crowd, consider standing further back from the stage or to the sides, where the crowd density is usually thinner.
"You should also be aware of the mood of the crowd, if you begin to notice people jostling or moving forward, it might be worth considering moving backwards in the crowd to avoid any potential crowd surges that can have potentially severe consequences.'
2. Wear suitable clothing and footwear
Nick stresses: 'While it's fun to put on colourful and lively outfits, wearing unsupportive shoes like sandals or flip-flops can easily lead to sprained ankles or stepping on something sharp, which could result in the rest of your weekend being a lot less enjoyable."
3. Protect your ears
The cheering crowds and thumping bass of a music festival can do serious damage to your hearing.
Nick adds: 'There's a wide range of hearing protection available, that will defend your ears without sacrificing the festival experience. For example, you can purchase a pair of earbuds that help to filter out the loudest levels of sound.'
While Loops are a popular brand, available on Amazon for £19.95, Debenhams offers a box of 200 foam ear plugs, currently on offer for £34.19.
4. Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun
Nick says: 'Being outdoors in the heat can be physically demanding, especially if you're on your feet dancing. It's important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, so make sure you have a large reusable bottle to keep refilling and take regular drinking breaks."
While large hard-shell bottles are on the list of forbidden items for TRNSMT, a collapsible bottle 500ml or smaller is allowed.
If you don't already have one, some cheap options are available, such as this one from Amazon, which retails at £9.99.
Alternatively, this Decathlon option from Argos is available for £12. Small bottles of sun cream are also allowed in the festival grounds.
5. Take regular breaks
Nick explains: 'Not getting enough sleep and then spending hours drinking and dancing can be exhausting and can take a toll on your body.
'Try to make time to have regular breaks to rest and recharge - find a shaded place to rest away from direct sunlight, perhaps by sitting at the back of a music tent so you can relax but still enjoy the performances."
6. Be aware of your surroundings
The expert continues: 'Remember to pay attention to your surroundings, and watch where you're walking, particularly when walking around the campsite at night, where hazards will be less obvious.'
7. Arrange meeting points and keep your phone charged
Nick says: 'Get to know your maps and different landmarks around the site. It's a good idea to memorise where you will be able to find important locations such as the nearest medical tent, or help centre in case you need to use their services at any point.
"You should also agree on an easy to find meeting point with your friends in case you get separated and can't get a signal for your phone."
Power banks are also allowed into TRNSMT, so you can ensure your phone has enough juice to contact your friends if you get separated (providing you have phone service).
One top-rated product is the INIU Power Bank, which is 21 per cent off on Amazon, now costing £14.98. For those looking for a brighter portable charger to match a colourful festival outfit, Argos offers this discounted one for £22.39 which comes in black, blue or pink.
8. Understand fire hazards
Nick shares: 'If you're a smoker, make sure you don't drop the end of cigarette buts on the floor as this can set dry grass alight. I would recommend buying a cigarette ash pouch, which you can use to dispose of any cigarettes to prevent litter.
'If you notice the start of a fire, make sure you notice a member of festival staff in hi-vis."

New Look's suede jacket for festivals that 'looks really expensive' now 40% less
Get festival ready by taking advantage of the high street retailer's discount. Still looking for something to wear this festival season? Then New Look shoppers have found just the jacket that is perfectly in fashion for summer '25. The western/cowboy-style trend has been on our radar pretty much this entire season, with many retailers offering boho-inspired edits that would look perfect at the likes of TRNSMT and Reading. Which is exactly why we were delighted to spot New Look's Tan Fringe Trimmed Faux Suede Jacket, which matches the 'in' style at the moment, currently enjoying a 40 per cent discount online. Retailing at £49.99, fashion fans can bag it for just £29.99, saving a decent £20 off the RRP. With suede back in for summer and more festivals set to take place in the coming months, we expect this to be a popular deal. With its "edgy" biker jacket silhouette, faux-suede material and fringed trims, it won't look out of place when worn with some frayed denim shorts, a basic tee and wellies when walking through the fields to catch your favourite music acts. Tan Fringe Trimmed Faux Suede Jacket Product Description The interior of the jacket is fully lined, while long sleeves, a collared neckline, a front zip and handy zipped side pockets that can stash smaller items such as a phone complete the design. As of writing, festival-goers will still be able to pick this tan-coloured jacket up in sizes six to 18 from the high street retailer's website. For anyone who'd maybe prefer a different material to suede, then we have spotted this Faux Leather Fringe Biker Jacket by V for Very on offer £22, reduced from £55, saving £33 off the RRP. For shoppers who'd prefer a sleeveless design that won't cause them to overheat amidst the higher temperatures, then we'd recommend looking into ASOS' premium suede fringe gilet in light tan as an alternative, although it is pricey at £180. As for New Look's own suede jacket, there's no denying that it ticks off all the trends for festival season, so it's not surprising to see that it has a 4.5 rating from shoppers who have said it "looks really expensive." One shopper who purchased it said: "Perfect fit - looks really expensive but was very reasonable." A second five-star review read: "Great jacket. Fits well, I bought size 12. It is lined and has zip pockets. My new fav jacket." Not everyone was impressed, as one shopper was left disappointed with both style and material. Leaving a three-star review, they wrote: "Lovely design but short and a lot of puckering The first jacket I've ever had from New Look that wasn't up to scratch. Fashion deal of the week Looking to make a statement this summer? Then this is the wardrobe update you need. Roman's Fuchsia Floral Ruched Waist Maxi Dress is said to be such a show-stopper, that customers say they get "stopped" and asked "where they bought it from." While it does retail at £48, fashion fans can add this pop of colour to their summer style for less, as the clothing retailer is offering it for 10 per cent less when using the code HAPPY at the checkout, reducing the total cost to £43.20. Falling to a floaty maxi-length hemline, it offers a "flattering" effect on the figure thanks to its fit-and-flare design, thick ruched waistline and tie-belt feature, all which will help streamline and cinch the body. Its short sleeves, lightweight material and its multi-coloured all-over floral print design make it the ultimate breezy and "eye-catching" choice for the current hot, humid days we are experiencing. Finished with a chic V-neckline and a wooden button detailing down the front, this colourful maxi dress is ideal for pairing with some chunky wedge sandals and maybe even a denim jacket for the unpredictable summer weather. The £48 frock is still available to buy in sizes 10 through to 20. There's also a pink floral version that is a touch less vibrant than the fuchsia colourway in the same sizes, with the exception of a 12. Averaging a near perfect 4.9 rating, one shopper praised: "I have this dress and wore it for the first time today. Went out to lunch and a number of people stopped me to say how nice my dress was. I can't remember the last time that happened." A second admiring shopper wrote: "Absolutely stunning so feminine, floaty got quite a few compliments. It will be going to Greece with me this year." "Also didn't hang well, but I'm an older customer who needs things to fit well and look smart, which as I said usually, I've never had any problems. Maybe was just this particular one. Might order another one to see if better made." It was the only negative review, as another pleased customer said: "Happy with this jacket. Bought for a present as the person is also having cowgirl boots from America to complement it." Lorraine Kelly's ‘curry night' with Pacific Ocean rowers – 6000 miles out to sea
'We've got a couple of cans of beer. We had one of them already. But I think there would be cause for a mutiny if the chocolate runs out' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE heroic Maclean brothers hosted two celebrity dinner guests this week - as they continue to row across the Pacific Ocean. Ewan, 33, Jamie, 32, and Lachlan, 28, have passed Day 80 of their record breaking voyage from Peru to their final destination in Australia. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 5 The Maclean Brothers are aiming for the record books. 5 The rowers had their freeze dried meal at the same time as their dinner date Lorraine. 5 Hollywood star Mark Wahlberg has now video called the Scots twice. 5 Greg Hemphill had a host of questions for the rowers. But Lorraine Kelly and Still Game's Greg Hemphill both joined the lads as virtual dinner dates to help boost their morale. ITV host Lorraine tucked into a freeze dried ruby chicken curry with the lads who were over 10,000miles away from her London base. Initially she described their food as looking 'disgusting' but was soon won over saying it tasted 'really nice'. While Greg, 55, who played Craiglang's Victor McDade, wanted to know what the Macleans have to drink, asking: 'Have you had any alcohol on board?' Jamie replied: 'We've got a couple of cans of beer. We had one of them already. But I think there would be cause for a mutiny if the chocolate runs out.' Greg then confessed that he would like to join them for a leg of their trip. He told them: 'I'm an old man of the sea. I have my day skipper licence. 'I think I must have been an old sailor in the past and would have joined the navy for sure. 'But what you are doing is above and beyond all that.' The siblings are aiming to become the fastest to row the 9,000 mile route completely unsupported. Trolls attack Lorraine over 'disgraceful' way she broke Kim Woodburn's death on live TV They've already managed to row over 6,000 miles but have been hit by storms along the way and been followed by a man-eating hammerhead shark. Despite that, the Maclean's told Lorraine, 65, that they still have to take a dip in the ocean. Lachlan says: 'It's not a leisure swim, but we have to clean the bottom of the boat. 'It's amazing how quickly you get kind of barnacles and little muscles on the bottom of the hull. 'So we have to jump in and kind of scrape down, because they really slow the boat down.' And as they near the Australian coast they reveal the sharks will get bigger as they enter waters patrolled by great whites. Ewan says: 'We've seen a bunch of sharks already. I think they're mostly reef sharks which aren't that big although we actually saw a hammerhead the other day. I think once we get closer to Australia we will have to be really careful as we will still need to get in the water every five days to clean the hull. 'So I think once we get beyond New Zealand on that final stretch to Australia there will be great whites in those waters.' But keen fisherman Greg also wanted to know what kind of fish the lads had been catching to eat. Jamie explained: 'For the first half of the journey there were flying fish everywhere. 'They're like pigeons of the sea. They're pests. Some of them are quite big, about the size of a mackerel. 'They travel at some speed and the perfect height to take out a rower's head then just fly on. 'But the little ones end up just throwing themselves on deck. You wake up in the morning, and it looks like there's been some sort of massacre and they've already started to smell.' However Lorraine wanted to know if the brothers themselves had started to smell as they're cooped up today night and day on the 30ft vessel called the Rose Emily. She asked: 'Are you all really smelly and horrible? Or can you wash?' Ewan replied: 'Well, I think to each other we smell okay, but the reality would be to anyone on the outside, it's probably pretty dreadful. 'But we do have to be quite strict. Mainly from a salt perspective as the sea spray corrodes your skin and can quite quickly cause salt sores and blisters. 'So on that basis you either have to rinse it off with fresh water baby wipe before going to bed.' We revealed last month how Mark Wahlberg, 54, had also had a video call with the Scots brothers saying he wanted to make a movie about their "badass" record bid. And Greg wanted to know how they had got in touch with the Hollywood A-lister. Lachlan says: 'It was very surreal as we didn't have any kind of link to him. He reached via one of his people. Apparently he was just taken by the story. 'But we've actually spoken to him twice now. He seems quite interested in what's going on. He's Just a lovely guy.' *The Maclean Brothers are attempting to raise £1million for clean water projects. For more information visit
