Shruti Haasan Reveals How She Landed The Role In Rajinikanth's Coolie
Coolie, starring Rajinikanth in the lead role, is set to hit theatres on August 14. Among other seasoned actors, Shruti Haasan plays a pivotal role in the film, which is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. In the latest, the actress has revealed how she was cast in this big-budget project and also shared details about her character.
How Shruti Haasan Got Cast In Coolie?
In a conversation with journalist Prema on YouTube, Shruti Haasan revealed that she will play Sathyaraj's character Rajasekar's daughter, Preethi. As per earlier speculations, she was expected to play Rajinikanth's daughter, but the actress has now clarified her role. Talking about being cast in Coolie, Shruti Haasan recalled, 'Lokesh came to me to talk about the Inimel music video, and we were planning to have a meeting in the RKFI office. The minute he came in, he was like before our meeting, I wanna tell you something. I'm making this movie, and I want you to do this film. Soon, he gave me a one-liner, too. I was like, What is going on… usually you get a call from a manager that a director wants to meet you. So you're prepared." Shruti added that she was quite confused as the conversation started about a music video, and then they were discussing the film.
Coolie Release Date
Coolie, will release on August 14 and apart from Rajinikanth, Sathyaraj and Shruti Hassan, it will also star Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan, Upendra and Soubin Shahir. Anirudh composed the music for the film, which marks his fourth consecutive collaboration with filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj. Girish Gangadharan serves as the cinematographer, while Philomin Raj is the editor. The film has also created buzz since it reunites Sathyaraj and Rajinikanth after nearly 38 years. Sathyaraj played Rajinikanth's father in the 1986 Tamil film Mr Bharath, in which the two last appeared together. Interestingly, Sathyaraj declined offers to appear in several of Rajinikanth's other films, including Enthiran and Sivaji.
Coolie's story will revolve around gold smuggling. Interestingly, filmmaker Lokesh Kanakaraj has declared that Coolie will be a stand-alone picture, not part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji and starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, is also expected to compete with Rajinikanth's film at the box office.

The golden year half a century ago
K Balachander's Apoorva Raagangal (Rare Melodies) is a landmark Tamil film often cited for being the breakthrough lead role for Kamal Haasan, the debut vehicle for Rajinikanth and the bearer of one of the most melodic soundtracks of Indian cinema. What's more, it's a milestone in radically positing that love knows no barriers of age. The film turned the idea of romance on its head with its focus on an unusual, complex relationship dynamic where a young man falls in love with an older woman, while her daughter gets attracted to his father. Its ambiguous open-endedness notwithstanding, Apoorva Raagangal feels liberal not just for its own times. The film completes 50 years this August 15, the day that saw the release of one of the most commercially successful Indian films, Ramesh Sippy's Sholay. While this much mythologised film will expectedly be the cause of many celebrations this year, it would be appropriate to also acknowledge the other cinematic saplings born that year that have grown in relevance since. While 1957 is often called the highpoint in Indian cinema's golden age, 1975 was noteworthy in its own way. If it signalled a turning point in Tamil cinema with the arrival of a new generation of accomplished male stars, to eventually take the baton from Sivaji Ganesan and M G Ramachandran, filmmakers like Balachander and later Bharathiraja made mainstream Tamil cinema soar to new heights in the following years. In Telugu cinema, 1975 marked the continuation of the domination of N T Rama Rao. However, Dasari Narayan Rao's Balipeetam is a significant pick from the year's crop, exploring the still-relevant issue of tensions in an inter-caste marriage between a Dalit boy and a Brahmin girl. In Malayalam cinema, the year was one of the most fecund for actor Prem Nazir, with more than a dozen releases. But more important was the arrival of G Aravindan as a force to reckon with in the parallel cinema movement. Though his debut feature Uttarayanam won the national and Kerala state film awards in 1974, its year of release is often attributed as 1975. Aravindan dealt with the crucial issue of unemployment in the 1970s and how it was driven by conflicting ideologies—varied means geared towards the same end. With experiments with storytelling and form, Aravindan made a strong comment on political opportunism and the corruption seeping into the individual and the system.

A life on the line: South Indian stunt artists battle danger without a safety net
He was the original action hero, a man who dared to do what no one else would. On November 16, 1980, Malayalam superstar Jayan strapped himself to a dream—and a helicopter. While shooting the climax of Kolilakkam in Sholavaram near Chennai, he leapt from a moving motorcycle onto a hovering Bell 47. The scene was already in the can, but Jayan, ever the perfectionist, wanted a retake. What followed was horror: the helicopter spun out of control and crashed. Jayan was killed instantly. He was 41. More than four decades later, the story repeats itself—this time in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. On July 13, 2025, S. Mohanraj, known in the industry as SM Raju, one of Tamil cinema's seasoned stunt masters, died performing a high-speed car stunt for director Pa Ranjith's upcoming film Vettuvam. The vehicle overturned during filming. He was rushed to the hospital but could not be saved. These aren't isolated tragedies. Last year, a car chase gone wrong during the filming of Bromance left actors Arjun Ashokan and Sangeet Prathap injured, prompting a Motor Vehicles Department case for overspeeding. In 2016, two stuntmen drowned during the shoot of Masti Gudi, a Kannada film. The two—Uday Raghav and Anil Kumar—jumped from a helicopter into a reservoir without life jackets. They drowned. The film's lead actor, who wore a life jacket, survived.
