J-K: Mirwaiz claims he is under house arrest

The Print18-07-2025
The Hurriyat leader was placed under house arrest on July 11, two days ahead of the July 13 commemoration function for martyrs of 1931.
'For second consecutive Friday I remain under house detention – with every lane and by-lane to my residence barricaded, causing inconvenience to the entire neighbourhood,' Mirwaiz said in a post on X.
Srinagar, Jul 18 (PTI) Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq claimed to have been placed under house detention for the second consecutive Friday.
'Let me make it clear to the rulers, the memory of our martyrs cannot be regulated by them. It resides in our hearts. Facts and history cannot be erased by lockdowns and barring people from visiting the martyrs graveyards or stopping me from going to Jama Masjid on Fridays, not by appeasing narratives or shameful communal distortions, if it resides in the collective memory of people, which it does,' he said.
'The Marty's of July 13 1931 were the frontrunners of the political movement in Kashmir; a people's just struggle against oppression. They are and will remain our inspiration,' he added.
July 13 is commemorated as 'Martyrs Day' in Jammu and Kashmir as a tribute to 22 people killed by the Dogra army outside Srinagar's central jail in 1931. The L-G administration had dropped the day from the list of gazetted holidays in 2020. PTI MIJ DV DV

Mamata launches ‘language movement', condemns targeting of migrant's family in Delhi

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the targeting of a migrant's family in Delhi on the day her party launched a 'language movement' to protest against the targeting of migrants from the State in BJP-ruled States. 'Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against Bengalis! ,' the Chief Minister said on social media. Ms. Banerjee wanted to know, 'where are they [BJP led government] taking the country now?' On Sunday (July 27, 2025), protest marches were organised across the State in line with plans announced by the Trinamool Congress chairperson. Ms. Banerjee had on July 21, at a Martyrs Day rally, announced the start of a 'language movement' against the targeting of migrants in the BJP-ruled States. The Chief Minister had called for protests every weekend till the next year's Assembly polls. Language movement From the streets of Kolkata to districts across the State, hundreds of people participated in the protests which the Trinamool has described as a 'language movement.' Some protesters also held posters highlighting the Bengali alphabet implying that BJP-ruled States are targeting migrants for speaking in Bengali. Migrants from West Bengal have been detained in different States like Odisha, Haryana and Delhi on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. Some migrants from West Bengal have also been pushed into Bangladesh. The Trinamool Congress chairperson has claimed that there is a directive issued by Ministry of Home Affairs to detain migrants and so far about 1,000 workers from the State has been detained in BJP ruled states. Along with the protests against migrants the Trinamool Congress has also raised concerns about the possibility of a SIR (Special Incentive Revision). 'The protest against SIR isn't just a reaction, it's a rejection of @BJP4India's plan to introduce the NRC through the backdoor! BJP is targeting poor, marginalised citizens with illegal notices, beyond their jurisdiction. It's a calculated attack on Bengal's identity, a violation of constitutional rights, and a war on the powerless,' the Trinamool Congress tweeted from its official handle, adding, 'We will defend every voice they're trying to erase!'

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Lucknow, Jul 27 (PTI) A superintendent engineer (SE) of Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam has been suspended for allegedly misbehaving with a consumer, officials said on Sunday. Sharing the suspension order of SE Prashant Singh on X, Uttar Pradesh Energy and Urban Development Minister A K Sharma said, 'Upbhogta Devo Bhav (consumer is god)!" PTI-2022 exam: 167 booked for forged degrees from JS University

Edited 399 Jaipur: Police's special operations group (SOG) has unearthed a major fraud in the 2022 Physical Training Instructor (PTI) recruitment exam, with hundreds of candidates having used forged BPEd degrees from JS University, based in Shikohabad of Uttar Pradesh, to clear the exam. Acting on digital evidence retrieved from the university's server, which logs tamper-proof timestamps of printed mark sheets, the SOG on Saturday registered an FIR against 167 individuals, including 165 selected candidates, rest are JS University officials and unknown accused. The probe builds on arrests made in March this year when the university's Chancellor, Registrar, and a middleman were arrested in a forged degree racket case. As per the FIR filed by SOG, investigators focused on 203 selected candidates from JS University's academic sessions 2017–2019, 2018–2020, 2019–2021, and 2020–2022, and found that only one had a marksheet printed during the official academic session (2018–2020). The remaining marksheets were generated during or immediately before the recruitment process—many on a single date, Oct 15, 2022—signalling mass forgery. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! Donate For Health Donate Now Undo Prior to this, an FIR was filed by SOG against several other candidates who were selected after passing exams with fake degrees and dummy candidates. As per the latest FIR, JS University is authorised to admit only 100 students annually for the BPEd course. At most, 400 valid graduates from four academic sessions should have been eligible. Yet, 2,082 applicants with JS University degrees appeared for the PTI exam. SOG found that 25 candidates originally claimed to have degrees from other universities but later submitted BPEd degrees from JS University. Another 26 had mismatched academic sessions between their forms and documents. Nine applicants listed DPEd credentials but submitted BPEd degrees during verification. Forty-three candidates from the 2020–22 batch submitted results dated after the Sept 25, 2022, eligibility cut-off. For the same academic session, candidates presented different result dates—an anomaly officials say is impossible if the records were authentic. All marksheets for the 2017–19 session were printed only in 2022, as the recruitment process began. SOG also uncovered that some candidates used backdated BPEd degrees from private universities in other states—Meghalaya, Chhattisgarh, and Gujarat. Investigators suspect collusion between university staff and intermediaries to generate certificates on demand. The PTI recruitment timeline began with the exam announcement on June 16, 2022, applications from June 23 to July 22, the exam on Sept 25, results on Oct 21, and document verification from Dec 2 to 16.
