Superman 2025 eyes $200 mn international box office debut as James Gunn and Peter Safran reboot DC Studios

Time of Indiaa day ago
James Gunn's new Superman movie is expected to bring in a massive global debut this weekend, with estimates pointing towards a $200 million-plus opening. This film marks the beginning of a new phase for DC Studios under Gunn and Peter Safran. The pressure is high, but so is the excitement.
Superman will open in 78 territories this week, starting with France, Italy and Korea on Wednesday. Germany, Brazil, Australia and Mexico join in on Thursday, while big markets like the UK, Spain, China and Japan follow on Friday. The film will be shown on around 60,000 screens across the globe.
With strong interest in Brazil, the UK and Mexico, Warner Bros expects a solid overseas turnout. China, where Superman is leading pre-sales for Thursday and Friday, could also play a big role in the overall numbers.
US opening tracking between $115 mn to $130 mn
According to Variety, Superman could earn between $115 million and $130 million over the weekend domestically. Preview screenings for Amazon Prime members have already sold out, and over 3,400 locations will open Thursday afternoon, increasing to 4,000 by Friday.
Critics and fans agree: #Superman summer is officially here. 💫 Experience the certified fresh movie in theaters this Friday. Get tickets now: https://t.co/mznvQOz0g3 pic.twitter.com/M3N38dB3Gv
Presale numbers stand at $20 million in the US, putting it ahead of Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and close to Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The film will also take over all premium screens in the US, which could give it an extra boost.
Superman legacy returns with fresh energy
Superman has already earned an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes, matching the same rating as the original 1978 film starring Christopher Reeve. That number is far better than Zack Snyder's Man of Steel (57%) or Batman v Superman (23%), and it could help convince older fans to return to theatres.
Critics and fans praised the lighter tone of the movie, with many calling it a hopeful reboot of the franchise. The early buzz and fresh direction might just help Superman fly higher than expected.
#Superman is Certified Fresh at 86% on the Tomatometer, with 87 reviews:https://t.co/sf09W13z4Q pic.twitter.com/t2NbnI2Mev
For Warner Bros, the Superman brand has always been a prized one. The original movies helped shape the modern superhero genre, but the franchise lost momentum after the 1980s. This time, with Gunn writing, directing and producing, there's hope for a fresh beginning.

Superman movie review: David Corenswet beats both Lex Luthor and superhero fatigue in a film that feels like a comic

Superman movie review Cast: David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced Director: James Gunn Rating: ★★★.5 Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Superman, saving the day once again! And this time, he is not battling an assortment of evil villains. He is battling something much darker - superhero fatigue. And he is winning, for sure. James Gunn's Superman reboot is no perfect cinema. It is childish, goofy, and tends to overuse absurd humour even in moments that require emotional calm. Yet, it is enjoyable. Superman is fun in a way that superhero movies, barring Deadpool and Gunn's own Guardians of the Galaxy, have not been in decades. And that is the bottom line: when you are having fun, you can look past the cracks! The plot {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} Superman spares us one of the most well-known origin stories. There is no Krypton, no flashbacks, and no Clark Kent as a baby. We begin in media res, with Superman (David Corenswet) - three years into his crimefighting career - getting his butt kicked for the first time. He recently intervened in an international conflict, saving the people of Jahranpur from an invasion by Boravia, a US ally. The Pentagon doesn't like him. And Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) wants to use this to subdue or kill him, using his own metahumans. But Superman has public support. And he is also friends with the Justice Gang (worst team name in comic book films ever), a privately owned, popular superhero team. So Luthor's job is cut out! Yet, the smartest man on the planet won't give up. And Superman must now come to terms with a revelation about his past and save the world while dealing with this identity crisis. And that alone makes him and the film likeable. Not since Brandon Routh's misunderstood Superman Returns (and Tyler Hoechlin to an extent) have we seen such a nice blend of Clark and Supes in one body, the way David Corenswet does. He embodies the big blue's innocence and optimism well. In a world where being hopeful is considered being silly, Superman's positivity is jarring. His black and white way of looking at the world is simplistic. But it is a return to the comics' (and Christopher Reeve films) way of looking at the character. He sees good in everyone, and that is his greatest strength. The way the film drives home the point of empathy being good is not soppy or cliched in any way. And that saves Superman from becoming a formula film from the 80s. {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} Superman has heart! And that alone makes him and the film likeable. James Gunn and Corenswet do well to bring the character's inexperience and naivete to the fore. You realise that he may be the most powerful being on the planet, but he is also a lost and confused Millennial (almost a Gen Z even), dealing with the same issues of love, career, and identity. {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} Nicholas Hoult is the other star of the show. Even though I prefer a more authoritative and older Luthor (blame the DCAU for that), Hoult brings a new flavour to Superman's nemesis, capturing his jealousy and self-righteousness perfectly. He also brings Luthor's arrogance and viciousness to the screen beautifully. It is a marked improvement from Jesse Eisenberg's polarising portrayal of the character. But if talking of improvements over Snyderverse, Gunn's biggest victory is Lois Lane. Rachel Brosnahan is the investigative reporter we never got Amy Adams as. She balances being a journalist and Superman's love interest without ever having to retreat into one role at the expense of the other. And one cannot praise Superman without a thought for Krypto, the annoying yet adorable pet our titular superhero has. The dog, 'not even a very good one', in Superman's own words, exemplifies why the film works. It is annoying, funny, and yet warms your heart. {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} The music is also another aspect where Superman scores (pun intended). The new Superman theme, an ode to John Williams' classic, is inspiring and stirring at the same time. But even apart from that, the score screams hope and justice, the motto Superman stands for. Gunn knows that in a Superman story, there is no place to brood. Even when faced with a life-altering truth about his past, Clark is despondent, but not hopeless. The words of Ma and Pa Kent are enough to bring him back to the light. The film never lets go of the idea of Superman, and stays fun throughout. Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor is a winner. Where Superman loses flight {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} But the fun gets a bit too much at times. James Gunn's penchant for being frivolous to the point of being irreverent gets to the viewer, eventually. There are several scenes where the campy and goofy humour gets too much, particularly one poignant scene between Lois and Superman, which, for some bizarre reason, has an interdimensional monster fighting the Justice Gang in the background. The film is relentless in its fun element, which often does not allow the viewer to truly care for the characters more deeply. It is all on the surface, mostly. Don't get me wrong. I really liked Superman. But I realise there was scope to love this film, this adaptation of the beloved character. To Gunn's credit, Superman is one of the toughest characters to adapt to the screen. Donner and Reeve left a strong blueprint. The character can get a little too goody two-shoes, and he is all-powerful. All of that leaves little scope for drama. Gunn fills in those gaps with fun and frivolity. And he succeeds in parts, but just gets the balance a little off. Can DCU fly up, up, and away? {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} {{^userSubscribed}} {{^usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{#usCountry}} {{/usCountry}} {{/userSubscribed}} Superman works because it is a film that knows its core audiences—comic book fans, kids, and people looking for a fun time at the movies. The film is light but includes sombre moments, including character deaths. If this is the direction the new DC Universe is taking, then Gunn is the best man to lead them there. They will have an interesting time trying to balance this fun approach with some seriousness that will be needed as the stakes get higher. superman james gunn Stay connected with all the glitz and glam from the world of entertainment , right from Hollywood gossip to Bollywood chit chat. Superman Review: James Gunn's seemingly simple and straighforward superhero flick about human kindness has a deep social undercurrent

Plot Superman (David Corenswet) loses his first fight ever, while protecting the people of Jahranpur from the military state of Boravia. He loses to the Hammer of Boravia, created by the prodigious Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), who is exploiting the conflict for his own gains. Lex frames Superman of being a traitor, to hold the superhero captive and go on with his plan to acquire Jahranpur, with the Boravian head of state. The story revolves around whether Superman can prove his innocence and save the people of Jahranpur. What Works for Superman Superman shines in its truthfulness to the Superman comics. James Gunn captures the heart of the superhero, and truly shows what the icon stands for. Even though the political issue forms the story's core, the essence of a quintessential Superman film is not lost. The pacing is tight, with a runtime that feels just right. In other words, it doesn't overstay its welcome. The visuals in the film are stunning. Metropolis is depicted beautifully. All of Superman's fights and flights are so memorable that you'd not mind watching the movie again, for the sheer pleasure of seeing what the superhero does best. James Gunn 's direction balances action, heart, and humor, making the new Superman accessible for all ages. Lastly, this movie can act as a good introduction to the younger lot, for the phenomenon of a superhero that Superman is. What Doesn't Work for Superman Superman isn't without flaws. The central conflict related to a political showdown between two countries is treated in a caricaturish way, which undercuts its seriousness to a degree. The stakes of global warfare never feel as weighty as they should, with exaggerated villains and overly simplified resolutions. This approach makes the political issue feel like a backdrop rather than a direct threat. Some scenes feel clumsily handled, particularly in the middle act, where the transitions between action and drama can put you off. And Lex Luthor's motivations to do what he does, seem very shallow. Barring these few concerns, Superman plays as a satisfying and enjoyable superhero flick with a big heart. Watch The Superman Promo Performances in Superman David Corenswet shines as both Clark Kent and Superman. There is a lot of love, honesty and vulnerability in his iteration of Superman. Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane is terrific. Her chemistry with David Corenswet is beautiful. Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor is menacing. He'd make a great movie star. Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific is terrific for real. There's this sharp intellect and cool confidence, along with understated humor, that oozes out of his character. Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern is hilarious, and Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl is fun too. Every other supporting actor elevates the script in their own little way. Final Verdict of Superman James Gunn's Superman is a heartfelt, thrilling reboot that stays true to its comic book roots while weaving an engaging film around a relevant political issue. It never loses sight of Superman's values of hope, kindness, and justice. Though the caricaturish conflict and occasional clumsy moments hold it back, the film's tight pacing, stunning visuals, and memorable scenes make it a standout. It's a fun, well-intentioned movie that reminds us about why Superman is a hero for all ages. Superman In Theatres Superman hits theatres on 11th July, 2025.
