Thaksin faces first witness hearings in lese majeste case
The case stems from an interview Thaksin gave to South Korean media in 2015, in which he allegedly made remarks disrespecting the monarchy. Thaksin has denied the charges and has been granted bail.
Thaksin's personal lawyer, Winyat Chatmontri, stated that the prosecution would present about three witnesses from the ten originally listed, with the trial expected to last three days. As the defence attorney, his role would be to cross-examine the witnesses.
He explained that Thaksin was required to attend court today because the defendant had been granted temporary release and needed to appear in court. He added that it remained to be seen whether the Criminal Court would impose any specific conditions for the proceedings.
When asked whether the defence would file a motion for a trial in absentia, Winyat replied that under the Criminal Procedure Code, the penalty for the charges in this case exceeds ten years, which likely excludes the possibility of such an exception. However, Thaksin wished to personally attend the trial.
The entire case involves seven court hearings, with 14 defence witnesses. The first defence witness testimony is scheduled for July 15, followed by three more hearings. The prosecution will call ten witnesses, with the prosecution's hearings scheduled for July 1–3.
All witness testimonies may be concluded before the seventh hearing, or the process could take the full seven hearings, with the final witness hearing set for July 23.
When asked if the defence had concerns regarding the video clip of Thaksin's interview with South Korean media, Winyat confirmed that the defence had issues with the video and would challenge its credibility in court. The defence will present evidence on how the clip was obtained and question its reliability.
Later, former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, Thaksin's brother-in-law, arrived at the court and briefly stated that he was there to offer moral support to Thaksin as a fellow citizen.
Somchai mentioned that Thaksin's lawyers had not listed him as a defence witness in this case, and it was the lawyers' responsibility to submit the names of the defence witnesses.
At 9.18am, Thaksin arrived at the court in a Mercedes-Benz. He avoided using the main courthouse stairs and instead took the side elevator to avoid the large crowd of journalists and photographers waiting outside to cover the case.

Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man was jailed 12 months by the Magistrate's Court here on Tuesday for assaulting his elder sister during a domestic dispute at their home. Ridzuan Roslan, 29, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Fariza Wan Ghazali to voluntarily causing hurt to Normala Roslan, 48, on April 27, this year, at 1pm in a unit at Cyber City Apartment Phase 2. The charge under Section 323, read with Section 326A of the Penal Code, carries up to one year in jail, a fine, whipping, or any two of these, and under Section 326A, the sentence can be doubled if the victim is a spouse, ex-spouse, child, disabled adult, or other family member. In passing the sentence, Wan Farrah said family members should be protected, not harmed, and believed a deterrent sentence was necessary to teach Ridzuan a lesson. Earlier, the prosecution in tendering the facts of the case informed the court that on the said day, the dispute began when the victim, told Ridzuan, her younger brother, to stop shouting inside the house. Ridzuan reacted aggressively by punching the victim on the right side of her head, choking her, and slamming her left arm against a metal grille door, said the prosecution, adding that the victim sustained bruises and injuries as a result of the attack. A police report was lodged following the incident, and Ridzuan was arrested. Unrepresented, Ridzuan requested a lenient sentence, saying that he is unemployed and single. Meanwhile, two women were fined a total of RM2,600 for engaging in illegal online gambling activities. Nor Sada and Murni Muis pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to the charges against them, respectively. Nor Sada, 41, was ordered to pay a fine of RM1,400, or one month in jail for engaging in an online gambling session using a handphone in public on Nov 9, last year, at 5.30pm, outside a premises at Industrial Point Mile 5, Jalan Tuaran. Murni was fined RM1,200, or jailed one month for purchasing three lottery tickets without a licence on April 15, this year, at 12.30pm, at the five-foot-way of a shop in Kampung Air here. Inspector Yusri Basri, prosecuting, informed the court that RM75 and RM115 in cash were seized by police from Nor Sada and Murni, respectively, during the raid. Oil and gas consultant loses RM2.7m in investment scam
IPOH: An oil and gas consultant lost over RM2.7 million after falling victim to a non-existent investment scheme advertised on a website. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 37-year-old man lodged a police report on June 29 at the Ipoh district police headquarters, claiming he had been scammed through an online investment platform known as 'Nova 88.' Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim registered an account on the website in April 2023 through a contact, now the main suspect, whom he had met via WhatsApp. Convinced by the suspect, the victim made an initial deposit of RM30,000 into a provided account number and was then given a user ID and password to monitor the supposed investment. 'Between Jan 5, 2024, and May 20, 2025, the victim made 136 fund transfers to seven different accounts, totalling RM2,701,687. The funds came from his savings and contributions from family members,' Noor Hisam said in a statement on Tuesday (July 1). He said the victim realised he had been duped when each attempt to withdraw his purported profits required additional payments. To date, he has been unable to access any returns, with the suspect offering numerous excuses before eventually becoming unreachable. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Noor Hisam advised the public to avoid any form of investment offered through unlicensed, unregistered, or unregulated websites. 'Such investments carry high risks and can lead to significant financial losses. Always verify the background of any investment company with recognised authorities such as Bank Negara Malaysia or the Securities Commission,' he said.

Woman caught on video stealing phone at Cheras drink stall, police urge her to surrender
A woman has landed herself in hot water after she was caught on CCTV allegedly stealing a mobile phone at a popular drink stall in Cheras Trader Square, Batu 9, last Thursday (June 26). The 16-second footage, which has gone viral on social media, shows the woman placing an order at the cashier before spotting a phone left charging on the counter. Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof confirmed the case and appealed for the woman involved to surrender herself. 'We urge the woman to turn herself in at the nearest police station,' he told New Straits Times. Members of the public with any information are encouraged to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Ammar Mohd Tahir, at 018-2586153. The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both if convicted.
