Queen to appear in favourite author's new crime thriller about killer in Palace

Rhyl Journal04-06-2025
Peter James's latest Detective Superintendent Roy Grace thriller centres on a race to stop a killer at Buckingham Palace.
Camilla is depicted travelling aboard the Royal Train when disaster strikes and it derails, and a trusted aide is shot by a sniper, leading Grace to head to the Palace to investigate, the Daily Mail revealed.
The Queen is understood to have been aware of the book.
James – one of Camilla's favourite authors – is said to have carried out extensive research about the famous royal residence.
In the publicity for the novel, publisher Pan Macmillan describes James as the 'Creator of Her Majesty Queen Camilla's favourite fictional detective'.
It says of the plot: 'A tragic accident or a planned attack?… Despite all the evidence, Roy Grace is not convinced the Queen was the intended target… Failure at this level is not an option. But time is running out before a killer in the Palace will strike again.'
The also King features in The Hawk Is Dead: A Killer In The Palace, which is due out in October.
The Queen, a voracious reader and passionate supporter of a number of literary charities, previously recommended James's blockbusters as part her Reading Room book club.
In 2021, she visited the set of Grace – ITV's television adaptation of James's books which stars John Simm as the troubled but methodical detective – and joked about asking for a cameo role.
She told James: 'I love your books. I've read them all, cover to cover.'

Prince Harry denies physical altercation with Prince Andrew amid new biography revelations

A representative for the Duke of Sussex has spoken out against claims made in a new unauthorised biography about Prince Andrew, which alleges the royals have a fraught relationship The Duke of Sussex has categorically denied claims that he was involved in a physical altercation with Prince Andrew, dismissing the shocking allegations made in a new biography about the scandal-hit Royal. ‌ Following the release of the book titled Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, which insinuates that the brothers-in-law had a fight at a family gathering in 2013, a spokesperson for Prince Harry responded to PEOPLE, stating: "I can confirm neither of those things are true. Prince Harry and Prince Andrew have never had a physical fight, nor did Prince Andrew ever make those comments about the Duchess of Sussex to Prince Harry,". ‌ The book by Lownie, portions of which were featured in the Daily Mail, portrays Prince Andrew as a divisive character within the Royal family. ‌ It delves into his alleged connections with Jeffrey Epstein and suggests that his relationships with nephews Prince Harry and Prince William have become increasingly tense over the years. The book alleges that Prince William has privately advocated for Andrew's eviction from Royal Lodge, the Windsor estate where the Duke of York currently resides with his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, reports the Mirror US. The biography asserts that William has "long harboured" disdain for both Andrew and Ferguson, whom he reportedly views as out of sync with the future direction of the Royal household. ‌ The allegations emerge amidst ongoing public scrutiny and internal tensions within the Royal family, especially after Harry and Meghan's bombshell 2020 departure as senior royals to start a new life in California. Now settled in Montecito, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are busy raising their young brood, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, while dedicating themselves to charitable work and media endeavours. Despite the stormy waters with his kin, Harry hasn't given up on mending fences, telling the BBC in May: "I would love reconciliation with my family," and adding, "There's no point in continuing to fight anymore." ‌ On the other side of the pond, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were captured in a seldom-seen family moment along the sunny shores of California. TMZ released snaps on August 1 showing the Sussexes unwinding at Santa Claus Beach in Carpinteria, where they watched their eldest, Prince Archie, catch some waves during a surf lesson. Meghan was the epitome of beach chic in a crisp white shirt paired with frayed denim shorts and a stylish straw hat, complemented by large black shades. Prince Harry opted for a laid-back look, donning a grey tee, black sports shorts, and aviator sunglasses, all topped off with a beige baseball cap.

Chiefs star breaks silence on impending jail sentence after causing crash on Dallas highway

Kansas City Chiefs star Rashee Rice insists he's 'completely changed' since his hit-and-run crash on a Dallas highway that was captured in a viral video last year. Rice was estimated to be speeding at 119mph before the collision, which resulted in several injuries for other motorists and passengers back in 2024. The wide receiver has since been sentenced to five years' probation and 30 days of jail time - which can be served at any time over the next five years. As he awaits a verdict from the league on his punishment, Rice has been at the Chiefs training camp and, on Saturday, took time to speak to reporters about the 2024 crash. He explained: 'I´ve completely changed. You have to learn from things like that. I've learned and taken advantage of being able to learn from something like that.' In a related lawsuit, Rice has agreed to pay $1million to a plaintiff who sued him over the 2024 crash, according to court documents obtained by Daily Mail. Rice is also being forced to pay $75,000 in pre-judgement interest and $12,000 in plaintiff attorney fees. The Chiefs are bracing for Rice to serve an NFL suspension. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement recently that the case 'remains under review.' 'My legal team is handling all that,' Rice said. 'All I can focus on is what I can control right now and that's me doing what I do.' Despite his looming punishment, Rice is looking to make a comeback following a ligament injury suffered in Week 4 - after colliding with Patrick Mahomes - which ended his entire 2024 season. The wide receiver underwent surgery to resolve the issue and has since been back in action during summer workouts. He continued: 'I feel 100%. I'm excited to be back out here with the guys. Just kind of basically where I left off at. 'The only thing is get back on the field and continue to have fun doing what I do.' Depending on the severity of his punishment from the NFL, Rice could be waiting a while longer to return to the field with his teammates. In a statement released by his attorney, Royce West, Rice said: 'Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. 'There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole. 'I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart. Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families.' Rice was renting the Lamborghini sport utility vehicle authorities said was one of two speeding sports cars that caused a chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway in May of 2024. The occupants of the Lamborghini and the other speeding vehicle — a Corvette — left without checking on the drivers and passengers in the other four cars involved in the collision. A spokesman for the rental company, The Classic Lifestyle, said the Lamborghini rents for about $1,750 a day and is worth about $250,000. Police said the Corvette and Lamborghini were speeding in the far-left lane of North Central Expressway when they lost control. The Lamborghini went onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain-reaction collision. Four people in the other vehicles were treated for minor injuries. The wide receiver was spotted at Chiefs training camp this week alongside Travis Kelce After his client was seen fleeing the scene of the accident, West said at the time that Rice would 'take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly.' Rice, a member of the Super Bowl LVIII-winning Chiefs team, is from the Dallas area. He played for Southern Methodist University and grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills. The 25-year-old has $3.5 million in career earnings and is slated to make $1.3 million in 2025. However, that salary will likely suffer if he misses any games due to suspension. The Chiefs had been thin at receiver and thus stood by Rice in 2024, after an injury to Marquise Brown during the first game of pre-season. Already thin at receiver, the Chiefs stood by Rice in 2024 in spite of the arrest. Ultimately Rice's season was ended in Week 4 when he tore his ACL by colliding with quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Rice is expected to be ready for training camp when it opens on July 21 at Missouri Western State University. He has not addressed the ruling publicly, but did post a photo of himself on Instagram with the caption: 'Gods (sic) plan.'

Haverfordwest alpaca farm to reopen after bird flu outbreak

Seven chickens at Sweet Home Alpaca in Haverfordwest were found dead at the end of June, with tests showing they had died from the disease. This resulted in the remaining 113 chickens at the farm being culled. The farm was then forced to close temporarily, meaning no alpaca experiences could take place. However, owner Angela Frayling-James has now shared the good news that some of the restrictions have been lifted, meaning the farm can reopen on Monday, August 4. Ms Frayling-James said: "I'm so excited. "We've just had the news that some of the restrictions on the farm have been lifted. "We've just been told we can start having customers again from Monday, August 4, onwards. "It's just amazing news after the past few weeks." The farm had been closed since the start of July after the bird flu outbreak was confirmed, meaning the popular alpaca walks, talks, and experiences had been unable to take place. This had left the owners unable to make a living. A GoFundMe page was set up to help the farm, which has so far raised more than £7,000 of a £9,000 target. On the page, organiser Peter said: "Angela and Alex rely on their alpaca experiences to make a living, and now being shut down due to a totally unexpected case of bird flu has halted all operations. "Currently, no guests can visit and enjoy a fun-filled day with the alpacas, no events can experience their alpacas taking part, and most importantly, Angela and Alex have lost so much that they have spent the last six years building up towards." Sweet Home Alpaca, which was named the best tour and attraction in Pembrokeshire for 2024 by TripAdvisor, is now looking for people to help them get the farm ready for the official reopening day on Monday. Ms Frayling-James added: "We've still got a really long way to go to getting the farm fully reopened, but we just want to say thank you to everyone who has sent us a message and all our donors, whoever you are, thank you so much. "Thank you to everyone who has reached out and offered us help. "We love every single one of you, and honestly without all of you we would not have been able to get through this."
