Grab swings to $25.9 million profit in Q2 as revenue beats estimates
Grab reported revenue of US$819 million for the six months to June 30, above analysts' expectations of US$811.3 million.
Bengaluru - Grab Holdings beat Wall Street expectations for second-quarter revenue on July 30, as consumers boosted spending on its ride-hailing and food delivery platform despite global economic uncertainty.
This drove it to a profit of US$20 million ($25.9 million) for the quarter, compared with a US$68 million loss in the same period a year earlier.
Grab's push to turn its platform into a superapp, integrating ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery, and other digital services, has drawn a growing number of users willing to pay for its subscription plans.
While ongoing US trade negotiations have cast a cloud over global economic stability, leading to concerns about tariffs and elevated costs in South-east Asia, the Singapore economy has remained resilient. It grew 4.3 per cent in the second quarter, avoiding a technical recession.
'What we're seeing is that the more you make our products more affordable, it drives that growth, and it also shields us from some of the macro that you're seeing across the globe,' Grab chief financial officer Peter Oey told Reuters.
The company has been attempting to lure price-sensitive consumers to its ride-hailing platform while increasing the number of drivers to keep pace with a growing userbase.
Grab reported revenue of US$819 million for the six months to June 30, above analysts' expectations of US$811.3 million, according to LSEG data.

The company noted its strong performance in Indonesia, a market it had previously described as underpenetrated, aiming to capitalize on the country's large population and grow market share.
Mr Oey said Indonesia is a profitable market for the company, which seeks to double down on investing in the country.
The online service market in South-east Asia has been consolidating, with large players acquiring smaller firms to grow their product portfolios.
Reuters reported in May that Grab was exploring acquiring smaller Indonesian rival GoTo, but Mr Oey reiterated that the company is not in discussions with them. REUTERS

Joby says Blade deal ‘massive accelerant' in air taxi drive
[NEW YORK] Joby Aviation said that it plans to buy the helicopter rideshare business of Blade Air Mobility for as much as US$125 million in stock or cash as the electric aviation firm seeks to expand its battery-powered air taxis into a ready-made market for its aircraft. The acquisition encompasses all of Blade's passenger business, including operations in the US and Europe, as well as the Blade brand, Joby said, confirming an earlier report by Bloomberg. Blade's medical division will remain a public company and rebrand, while partnering with Joby on medical transportation. Blade's helicopter business will continue to expand, even as Joby works to certify and bring its electrically powered aircraft into commercial service, JoeBen Bevirt, the company's chief executive officer, said on Monday (Aug 4). 'With the quiet aircraft we are building, we see an explosion in the number of takeoff and landing locations we can operate from,' Bevirt said. Backed by Toyota Motor, Joby expects to have five aircraft in one of the final phases of certification next year as it aims to start commercial flights in early 2026. The US$13.6 billion company announced plans last month to double production capacity at its plant in Marina, California, to manufacture as many as 24 aircraft a year. According to Joby, Blade flew more than 50,000 passengers in 2024 from a network of 12 urban terminals. China's services activity growth hits 14-month high in July: S&P PMI
[BEIJING] China's services activity expanded at its fastest pace in 14 months in July, fuelled by stronger demand, including a rise in new export orders, a private-sector survey showed on Tuesday (Aug 5). The S&P Global China General Services PMI rose to 52.6 in July from 50.6 the previous month, marking the fastest pace since May last year. The 50-mark separates expansion from contraction. The reading contrasted with China's official survey, which showed services activity edging down slightly to 50 in July from 50.1 in June. The S&P PMI is considered a better read of trends among smaller, export-oriented firms, particularly along the east coast, while the official PMI primarily tracks large and medium-sized enterprises, including state-owned companies. Meanwhile, the S&P China General Composite PMI dipped to 50.8 in July from 51.3 the previous month. China's economy, the world's second largest, slowed less than expected in the second quarter, helped by policy measures and factories leveraging the US-China trade truce to front-load shipments. However, concerns remain about the second half of the year as export momentum weakens, prices decline and consumer confidence remains subdued, partly hurt by a prolonged property market downturn. The new export orders sub-index rose for the first time in three months, bolstered by stronger tourism activity and more stable trade conditions. Last week, US and Chinese officials agreed to pursue an extension of their 90-day tariff truce after two days of what both sides called constructive talks in Stockholm. The survey showed that after reducing staffing levels in June, service providers increased employment at the quickest rate since July 2024, driven by higher workloads and improved confidence. This led to a slower accumulation of backlogged work. Rising costs for raw materials, fuel and salaries kept average input prices in expansion territory in July. As a result, service providers raised their selling prices for the first time in six months. With new business and activity on the rise, overall business confidence improved. Philippine inflation at near six-year low, paves way for rate cuts
[MANILA] Philippine consumer prices rose at their slowest pace in nearly six years in July as utility costs moderated and food prices declined, the statistics agency said on Tuesday, potentially allowing the central bank to cut interest rates later this year. The consumer price index rose 0.9 per cent year on year, the lowest rate since October 2019, and below the 1.1 per cent median forecast in a Reuters poll. The July figure was also less than June's 1.4 per cent. That brought the average rate in the seven-month period to 1.7 per cent, below the central bank's 2.0 per cent to 4.0 per cent target for the year. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Eli Remolona told Reuters last week the central bank was on track to slash its key interest rate, currently at a two-and-a-half-year low of 5.25 per cent, two more times this year, but the timing will depend on the outlook for growth and inflation. 'On balance, a more accommodative monetary policy stance remains warranted,' the central bank said in a statement following the data. 'Emerging risks to inflation from rising geopolitical tensions and external policy uncertainty will require closer monitoring, alongside the continued assessment of the impact of prior monetary policy adjustments,' it added. The statistics agency said the downward trend in rice inflation was likely to persist in the next few months. However, core inflation - which excludes volatile food and energy prices - slightly quickened to 2.3 per cent in July from 2.2 per cent the prior month. The Philippines, which has lowered its growth forecast for 2025 to 5.5 to 6.5 per cent from an earlier forecast of 6 to 8 per cent, will announce second quarter GDP data on August 7. Remolona has expressed optimism the figure would be better than the previous quarter's 5.4 per cent expansion. The central bank will review the direction of interest rates on Aug 28. REUTERS
