The conclave to elect Pope Francis's successor will begin on May 7, around 15 days after the Pope died and induced the Sede Vacante, or the vacancy.
WHO IS THE POPE?
The Pope is the Bishop of Rome and the visible head of the Catholic Church, which regards Jesus Christ as its invisible head. He is also known as the supreme pontiff, and his office is called the Papacy. The papacy oversees the Holy See, the central governing body of the Church and Vatican City, which enjoys formal diplomatic relations with other nations.
AND WHAT IS THE CONCLAVE?
It is the secret electoral process to determine the next pope.
According to Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni, over 180 cardinals arrived in Rome and took part in the first of the daily congregational meetings on Monday morning, of which 100 were cardinal electors.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE?
Only cardinals aged under 80 years are eligible to vote, making 135 such cardinals eligible. At least one cardinal has confirmed he will not be attending the conclave.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A CONCLAVE?
On May 7, the cardinal electors from all over the world will participate in the Mass Pro Eligendo Papa, a solemn Eucharistic ceremony where they will take the oath of secrecy. The Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations, who presides over this ceremony, will proclaim 'extra, omnes' ('Those who are extra, leave').
After this, eligible cardinals will be sequestered in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican to participate in the papal conclave. They will be disconnected from all outside information to ensure the process is free from any influence, in a process comparable to jury duty in the US.
The cardinals will vote in several rounds to elect the new pope until a single candidate enjoys a two-thirds majority. For each round that does not yield a pope, the cardinals will release black smoke from the chapel; upon the election of a new pope, white smoke will be emitted.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A NEW POPE IS ELECTED?
Once a candidate with a two-thirds majority is elected, the Dean, currently Cardinal Giovanni Batista Re, will ask him if he accepts the outcome, and to choose a name. Popes have traditionally chosen names that honour a saint or a predecessor.
The Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations functions as a notary in the presence of two Ceremonial Officers to draft the acceptance document and record the chosen name. This official record is the starting point for the newly elected Pope to assert his supreme authority over the Church.
All the Cardinal electors pay homage and pledge their obedience to the new pope, giving thanks to God.
A representative from the College of Cardinals will stand on the main balcony of St Peter's Basilica and announce 'Habemus papam' (Latin for 'We have a pope') to the gathered crowd of faithful. The new pope, dressed in a white cassock, will then deliver his first address to the public from the balcony.

BJP leader alleges SDPI, Jamaat infiltration in Church protests in Kerala
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: BJP state vice-president Shone George on Monday voiced concern over what he described as the 'infiltration' of groups such as the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Jamaat-e-Islami into protest programmes organised by Churches in Kerala. Shone told the TNIE that he had received clear evidence from trusted intelligence sources confirming the presence of these groups in the Church-led protests. Addressing a press conference, Shone alleged that elements of SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami had participated in protests held in Kannur, Thalassery, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Angamaly, Tiruvalla and Mananthavady in connection with the arrest of two Malayali nuns in Chhattisgarh recently. Noting that these groups had previously targeted Christian churches and leaders, Shone said their sudden support for the Church was 'not with good intentions'. He clarified that the BJP respected protests led by the Church, but warned that such infiltrations were 'dangerous'. He said the BJP had taken a 'humanitarian stance' on the nuns' issue. The BJP has raised the spectre of 'political Islam' infiltrating the Church in Kerala. The party's State vice-president Shone George told a news conference on Monday (August 4, 2025) that radical Islamists, beholden to the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Jamaat-e-Islami, had infiltrated Church protests in sizeable numbers, including those led by bishops, across the State. He noted the presence of Islamist elements in demonstrations led by Church leaders and the laity in several locations, including Kannur, Thalassery, Kozhikode, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Mananthavady, Angamaly and Ernakulam. 'I talked to the senior-most prelate in Kerala on Monday. He seemed not to be concerned about the presence of radical Islamists among the demonstrators,' he added. Asked to adduce evidence to back his charges, Mr. George asked mediapersons to contact the State police intelligence or mine their sources in the localities. Mr. George alleged that the SDPI's gambit was to use the arrest of the nuns as a foil for alienating Christians from the BJP. The SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami's tactics had the tacit backing of the Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. He accused the ruling front and the Opposition of seeking to frustrate the efforts of the BJP governments at the Centre and Chhattisgarh to secure an early release for the nuns. 'Both the Congress and the CPI(M) wanted the nuns to remain in jail to ensure that the emotive issue festers and retards the BJP's bourgeoning acceptance among Christians in Kerala,' he added. Mr. George said the Vatican Council in 1964 had ruled against forced conversion. 'In contrast, if Tipu Sultan's expeditionary forays had not halted at Kodungalloor 200 years ago, Kerala's social matrix would have been different,' he added. Mr. George attacked the Congress and CPI(M) for seeking the support of the Jamaat-e-Islami and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) respectively during the recent byelection in the Nilambur Assembly constituency. He said the BJP was with 'patriotic Muslims,' who, he stated, were in the majority. BJP leader S. Suresh, who is also a State vice-president, said the party would not allow political adversaries to single out State president Rajiv Chandrasekhar for criticism.
