Erne Wrestling Club continues to grow since moving into the Lower Celtic Park Community Centre last Autumn.
It caters for children from age seven years through to adults and there is coaching for beginners right through to recognised international athletes.
Last weekend, the club had tremendous success with two athletes competing internationally at the prestigious United World Wrestling (UWW) Jovenes Promesas 2025 in La Nucia in Spain.
This competition brought together more than 270 athletes from 17 countries and as a UWW event athletes can only compete if selected by their country.
The Club's newest international selection at this tournament was Tomás Gormley, representing Ireland for the first time. He competed in the U20 category and secured the bronze medal at this, his first UWW event.
Sixteen year old Naoise McManus continues her impressive progress with the Great Britain squad taking the bronze medal at the same event, competing in the largest category of the competition (U7 53kg).
Naoise has also now been selected to represent Great Britain at the UWW U17 European Beach Wrestling Championships to be held in Croatia at the end of May.
It's a great achievement for any club to have one athlete at an international level and at present Erne Wrestling has three!
Darragh Love (U23) and Naoise (U17) on the Great Britain squad and Tomás (U20) representing Ireland.
Their commitment and dedication has been evident to date and no doubt they will continue to impress. These three also take the time to help newer athletes and those teammates striving to follow their path.
Having athletes of this calibre gives the club tremendous credibility throughout GB and Ireland and we have an immense pride in the cross-community spirit that the club embodies.
It is a true reflection of the close knit inclusive society we have in Enniskillen.

Love wins British Senior Wrestling Championship in Manchester

Darragh Love sits top of the podium at the British Wrestling Championships. (Image: EWC) Erne Wrestling Club had an extremely successful week which began with Darragh Love and Tomás Gormley heading to the British Senior Championships in Manchester last weekend. Darragh made the transition to seniors seamlessly (whilst still eligible for the U23 category) winning gold and bringing the title of Senior British Champion 2025 to Fermanagh. Advertisement Tomás challenged himself by stepping up age divisions also to seniors, proving himself a force to be reckoned with and only narrowly losing out on a bronze medal. He continues his preparations ahead of the U20 Freestyle European Championships where he will represent Ireland in early July. At the junior level, Naoise McManus was selected from the GB performance pathway to represent Great Britain at the Under 17 European Beach Wrestling Championships in Croatia this week. She won her initial knockout match against France to make it through to the rounds and narrowly missed out on a win by one point against the European medallist from Greece. Advertisement After some further strong performances against Poland and Ukraine, she finished with a ranking of seventh in Europe. This is her first year at under 17 so no doubt there will be more successes to come. Of course, the hard work comes from the grassroots up so recognition must be given to Erne Wrestling Club's head coach Bruce for getting them to this level. These are massive achievements for these athletes who are also juggling university and school commitments, so keep your eye on them in the future. Better yet, get involved with Erne Wrestling Club for some serious, top-level training or just to have some fun.

Russian wrestler Baboryko banned for two years for doping with breast cancer drug

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Russian wrestler Dmitry Baboryko was banned for two years on Thursday after taking a breast cancer drug that counters the effects of using steroids. Baboryko tested positive for tamoxifen at the under-23 world championships last October in Albania, the International Testing Agency said on announcing the ban on behalf of the United World Wrestling governing body. He accepted the two-year sanction including being disqualified and stripped of the silver medal from the heavyweight 130-kilogram class in Greco-Roman wrestling, the ITA said. Russian wrestlers can compete in UWW events as approved neutral athletes who have not directly taken part in or publicly supported the war against Ukraine. None competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Wrestlers representing the 'Authorized Neutral Athletes' team won the most medals at the under-23 worlds in Albania, though it is formally excluded from the medal table led by Iran. Baboryko's ban expires in December 2026.
