Middelburg Observer supports the SPCA
Are you convinced that your doggy is the prettiest pooch or that your cat is the quirkiest kitty? Do you find your pet is so ugly that they're actually adorable?
Then you should enter our Cutest vs Ugliest Pet Photo Competition and support the Middelburg SPCA!
To enter, a cash donation of R50 or more, or pet supplies (such as food, blankets, toys and treats) can be dropped off at the Middelburg Observer's office (41 Meyer Street). Just ask for Leana.
Submit your information, as well as your pet's information, and send a photo of your pet alongside the reference number provided upon donation to leana@mobserver.co.za.
The competition will be voted on by the public, with more information to follow.
All photo competition entries close on July 18.
SPCA Market Day
We know the Middelburg SPCA is relying heavily on our community's support, and if you can't enter the Cutest vs Ugliest Pet Photo Competition, there are other ways you can help.
The SPCA is hosting a market day this Saturday with plenty of entertainment for the whole family.
The market day will be taking place from 08:00 to 13:00 at the Middelburg SPCA, and entry is free!
Local artists will be performing live for your own entertainment, and car enthusiasts can look forward to the vintage car display and sound show, as well as a show and shine.
Over 35 stalls will be available, each offering a variety of unique products, including home-made and hand-made goods.
Plenty of food stalls will also supply a variety of cuisines.
Keep a lookout for Paw Patrol and the Middelburg SPCA convoy, which will be driving through town to grab your attention.

Fashion to meet compassion for Durban SPCA
THE Durban SPCA is gearing up to host another fashion extravaganza at the Gecko Culinary Adventures in Windermere Centre, from July 8-10 to raise funds and awareness for animals in need. Billed as fashion meets compassion, the event will take place on the veranda of the venue from 08:00 to 17:00 on July 8 and 9, and from 08:00 to 15:00 on July 10. Shoppers will find a diverse range of pre-loved and new dresses, bags, jewellery, men's and children's wear, shoes, and other accessories, all at incredibly affordable prices. Items range from as little as R20 to R450, with the higher-end prices reserved for branded and newer pieces. Tanya Fleischer, SPCA marketing manager, said the event encourages community involvement. 'Those looking to declutter their wardrobes for a cause are welcome to donate gently used fashion items, which can be dropped off at the venue or collected upon request,' she said. 'By choosing second-hand clothing, shoppers actively support sustainable fashion practices, helping to reduce waste and preserve the environment. With two thrift stores – one at the SPCA premises in Springfield and the other in Sunningdale – the organisation is no stranger to sustainability and reselling pre-loved items, including books, at its popular book sale at The Crescent Shopping Mall. SPCA responds to 'concern' over dogs in Anele Mdoda post
The SPCA has publicly responded to an image of two dogs spotted in a X post by radio and TV personality Anele Mdoda. This comes amid news that content creator Sasha Tshiamo is facing animal cruelty charges relating to an emaciated dog seen in her viral TikTok video. The dog, nicknamed 'Bobby,' has since been removed and is awaiting adoption. In April, Anele announced her engagement to partner, with partner Bulelela 'Buzza' James, with a traditional lobola celebration. On her X account, Anele Mdoda posted images of her trip to her family home in the Eastern Cape. In the images, Anele and a group of elders were seen enjoying a plate of meat whilst sitting outdoors. 'Perfect day at home', she captioned the post. In the comments section, many X users spotted two hungry dogs in the background, likely waiting patiently to join in on the festivities. Many jokingly tagged the SPCA. @DUNCAN160: 'SPCA, they are eating alone while the dogs are just watching @KiptonNative: 'Bobby and his mate are waiting for their bones. They are not impressed by the delays.' @IAmWhatIAmAt100: 'The dogs are so skinny, look at how sad the other one is behind them Responding to being tagged in Anele Mdoda's posts, the SPCA's official X account thanked the public for their 'concern.' It replied to one X user: 'The dogs in the photos appear in good condition and not in distress. It added: 'If you believe otherwise, please let us know'. Apart from the dogs, several X users also criticised Anele Mdoda for her choice of clothing – a tracksuit and sneakers – whilst engaging with community elders. Clapping back, Anele posted: 'You can wear anything when you are at home. This is not up for discussion. My family elders are the ones who called me there.
