Cooper Flagg Receives Big News After 2025 NBA Draft
Cooper Flagg Receives Big News After 2025 NBA Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cooper Flagg was the National Player of the Year and a consensus first-team All-American in his only collegiate season. He led the Duke Blue Devils to the Final Four while averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. Advertisement On Wednesday night, the 6-foot-9 forward's professional basketball dream became a reality when he was drafted No. 1 overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2025 NBA draft. Flagg spoke to ESPN right after he heard his name called. "I'm feeling amazing. It's a dream come true, to be honest," the Newport, Maine native said as he stood next to his family. "I wouldn't want to share it with anybody else." All signs point to Flagg growing into an NBA star, and now he gets to learn from Mavericks coach Jason Kidd, a 2018 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, along with three likely future Hall of Famers as teammates in Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis. While Flagg looks set to create a buzz in the NBA, another accolade graced his way. Celtics' Jayson Tatum shares Cooper Flagg photo after NBA Draft
The post Celtics' Jayson Tatum shares Cooper Flagg photo after NBA Draft appeared first on ClutchPoints. Following the 2025 NBA Draft, Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum shared a photo on Instagram with newly drafted Cooper Flagg, showcasing a meaningful connection between the NBA veteran and the league's newest top pick, via Noa Dalzell. The photo, which shows Tatum in conversation with Flagg, comes after Flagg publicly named Tatum as his favorite player and the one he most looks forward to facing in the NBA. Advertisement In a draft night interview with ESPN's Scott Van Pelt, when asked who his favorite player is, Flagg responded, 'Maybe Jayson Tatum. That's somebody that I watched a lot at Duke and then watched a lot again as he went on to the Celtics.' Flagg also added during the interview, 'He's had an incredible career.' Flagg was selected No. 1 overall by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2025 NBA Draft, becoming the third Duke player since 2019 to go first overall, joining Zion Williamson and Paolo Banchero. The 18-year-old standout freshman at Duke averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game. He shot 48.1% from the field and 38.5% from three across 37 games, leading Duke to the Final Four before falling to Houston. Hailing from Maine, Flagg grew up watching Tatum closely, especially given Tatum's own ties to Duke and his ascension with the nearby Boston Celtics. Tatum has become a model of consistency and excellence for the Celtics. The 27-year-old forward is a six-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection. He led Boston to the 2024 NBA Championship and followed up with another strong season, averaging 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 6.0 assists. However, Tatum is expected to miss the entire 2025–26 season due to a torn Achilles suffered in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Advertisement Flagg enters the league with sky-high expectations. His rookie contract with Dallas is worth $62.7 million through 2028. If he meets projections, Flagg could become eligible for a $359 million supermax deal in 2029 and a potential $509 million contract in 2034. His potential career earnings could exceed $930 million from NBA contracts alone by age 31. Even with all the excitement, unfortunately, Cooper Flagg will not face his idol on the court during his rookie year due to Tatum's injury. Cooper Flagg ranked above Celtics star in The Athletic's top NBA prospects of last decade
The Athletic ranked its top NBA prospects of the last decade. And while the names on there aren't surprising, where some were ranked might raise eyebrows. Sam Vecenie graded the players when they entered the draft and not what they've accomplished thus far in their careers — if they've even been drafted yet. Advertisement Duke forward Cooper Flagg came it at No. 2, behind only Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who was selected first overall by San Antonio in the 2023 NBA Draft. 'He plays hard all the time and is relentless in his aggression on both ends,' Vecenie wrote of Flagg. 'He gives energy to his teammates and is all sorts of tough and fearless. He's the easiest person to buy into becoming a winning basketball player because he amplifies those around him.' The Maine native and Rutgers guard Dylan Harper were the only two college players to make the list. Flagg beat out several other NBA stars like Luka Doncic, Ja Morant and Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum — who was ranked at No. 12. Advertisement The Duke star is expected to be drafted by the Dallas Mavericks with the first overall pick on Wednesday. The Mavericks, who shockingly traded Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, won the NBA Draft Lottery in May despite having a 1.8% chance at getting the first pick. Flagg officially declared for the draft in April. The 18-year-old averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists in his one season with the Blue Devils. Flagg also shot 39% from 3-point range. While he only played one season, his numbers were enough to earn the the Naismith National Player of the Year. Flagg helped Duke to a 35-4 record and became the first Duke player to score 30 points, have at least five rebounds and as many assists in an NCAA tournament game — which came in a Sweet 16 win over Arizona.
