Rory McIlroy eyes overdue win after moving into share of lead at Scottish Open
England's Matt Fitzpatrick and Marco Penge are two shots back following rounds of 69, tied for third with Americans Wyndham Clark and Jake Knapp.
McIlroy landed his first birdie at the par-five third before dropping a shot at the seventh. However, he bounced back by picking up a shot on the next hole before further birdies at the 10th and par-three 14th.
The Northern Irishman appeared in slight trouble on the par-five 16th after a wayward drive ended in the deep rough. But a beautiful approach allowed him to roll in a straight uphill birdie putt.
He set himself up with another birdie chance at the following par three only to see his putt sail agonisingly wide.
A perfect 340-yard tee shot at the concluding hole put him in the driving seat once more, but again his birdie attempt rolled narrowly past the hole.
However, McIlroy's encouraging performance – with clear signs of him being back at his best – comes at a crucial time with The Open at Royal Portrush to follow next week.
It also marks a significant improvement on McIlroy's form since he won the Masters in April to complete the Grand Slam.

And he said on Sky Sports: 'It is my first realistic chance to win after the Masters.
'I have had a great season but yes, and I have said this before, when you do something you that have dreamt of for your whole life, and then do it, it was a huge moment in my life and career.
'I just need that little bit of time, and to be back here for the last couple of weeks and digest all of it, I feel like I came here for this tournament with renewed enthusiasm and excitement for the rest of the year.'
World number 158 Gotterup equalled the course record with nine birdies in a bogey-free 61 on Friday to start the third day two shots clear.
However, he will start the final day on level terms with McIlroy following a level-par round featuring two birdies and the same number of bogeys.

Since then, she has worked as a college football sideline reporter and studio host for Fox. However, she is now set to make another step forward in her career. According to Front Office Sports, Williams will take on the role of NFL sideline reporter on one of the network's announce teams this season and replace the departing Laura Okmin. Okmin will bid farewell to the network after turning down a contract extension. She is the third-longest-tenured sideline reporter in NFL history. She was initially barred from working on the sidelines of college football games this season because she refused to comply with the network's vaccine mandate while she and her husband try for their second child. In an Instagram video shared at the time, a visibly emotional Williams said that her 'request for accommodation' had been denied, about a month after announcing she would be sitting the season out because she hadn't yet received the vaccination. 'Ultimately, I can not put a paycheck over principal and I will not sacrifice something I believe in strongly to maintain a career,' Williams said near-tears in the video. Shortly after that, she confirmed that she would be 'separating' from ESPN. 'Belief is a word I've been thinking about a lot lately, because in addition to the medical apprehensions regarding my desire to have another child in regards to receiving this injection, I am also so morally and ethically not aligned with this,' Williams said. 'And I've had to really dig deep and analyze my values and my morals, and ultimately I need to put them first.' 'And the irony in all this is that a lot of those same values and principals I hold so dear are what made me a really good employee and probably helped with the success that I've been able to have in my career.' Williams, who had been with the network since 2011, said she was having trouble coming to terms with the fact that the national championship game she covered in January, 2021, may now be the last college football game she will work. In a statement, a spokesman for ESPN told 'We aren't going to comment on an individual. We are going through a thorough review of accommodation requests on a case by case basis, and are granting accommodations consistent with our legal obligations. Our focus is on a safe work environment for everyone.'

What Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry really think about each other as Irish pair gear up for Open battle
The brilliant Irish pair are close pals on and off the golf course and they've both spoken about their relationship Buddies Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have become best pals in recent times. The Irish pair have won individual titles as well as teaming-up for triumphs at The Ryder Cup and The Zurich Classic. Ahead of the Open at Royal Portrush, McIlroy and Lowry gave an insight into what they admire most about each other. McIlroy was first in the media room and said: 'We've always been close, but I think we've become very close over the last sort of five or six years. "I think once we both had kids, or at least once I had kids or had a daughter and I see how Shane is with his daughters, and I just think, when I say like a role model, I just think about how he is off the course, how he is able to separate his family life and his normal life from his golfing life. 'Look, I know I'm in a bit of a different position, so it may be a little bit more difficult for me, but it's definitely a place that I strive to be in, to be as comfortable getting away from it as he is in a way and enjoying the fruits of your success and sharing that with your loved ones. That's one of my New Year's resolutions was to have more fun. I think Shane is very good at having fun, and I need more of that in my life.' Lowry gave his response on McIlroy's best trait and said: 'I think his constant work ethic. We have become quite close over the last number of years and I think it's helped both of us. I think I help him, but he helps me as well. I think I certainly feel like I've learned a lot from his work ethic and how I apply myself to the game now. 'Where we live in Florida, there's a lot of players that live there and you go up to the range and there's never a day that goes by where you get there and some of the top players in the world are not there. "So you're like, well, if all these guys are here, we need to be doing it as well. I think my biggest thing, he's done everything there is to do in the game. He finished that in April. And his constant drive to get better every day is admirable.' Lowry won in 2019 as McIlroy missed the cut and the 2019 winner said: 'I reckon that first tee that morning in 2019 was the most nervous I've ever been on the first tee of a tournament. All you want to do is get the ball down the fairway and obviously Rory didn't do that. 'I remember talking to him a little bit in the lead-up to that and he did put a lot of pressure on himself, talking about it being the biggest tournament he's ever going to play and stuff like that. You live and you learn and I'm sure he's not going to do that this week. 'We've talked about it at the odd time but not that much. He doesn't want to talk about what he did on the first hole. I don't mind talking about what I did!'

However, a second stoppage in play after 5pm then brought a premature end to the day's action, with fans hoping for better weather as players return for the third official practice day on Tuesday.
